Spring Snow Goose Hunting 2014...116 bird day

This video was shot during the spring snow goose conservation season of 2014. We hunted in Arkansas and Missouri for a few days. We had an epic day of snow goose hunting killing 116 snow geese while shooting 5 boxes of shells in one day. We hunted from layout blinds and pit blinds and used around 1000 decoys. The spring snow goose migration is an amazing sight, we also saw many ducks and specks. We hunted with Northern Skies outfitters they are a great outfitter to hunt with and I cant wait to do it again.

    Kevin - It looks like you guys had a fun day. Here in Colorado the Snow Geese are just now coming down from the North. We have a very large population that winters here, like where you are, there is no limit and the farmers and ranchers are normally very willing to let you hunt their land to keep the Snows away.

    as a season bird hunter myself for over 25 years, these guys have a good set up and are not doing anything illegal, when it comes to snow geese, they bag limits per day are huge, even in Canada, per person is allowed 20 per day for each person,only because the population for this species has grown too big.

    That's right...snow geese are overpopulated and are eating themselves and other animals out of food. Even with no limit on snow geese the hunters are trying to help the situation by harvesting large amounts of birds trying to get the population in check but it is not helping much.

    Snow Geese are extremely over-populated and are decimating the tundra in Canada. One way or another the flock needs to be thinned or it could lead to a real problem of disease and irreversible environmental damage . Hunting or commercial capture needs to be considered.

  • @blairjames414

    @blairjames414

    Here's the point: snow geese are overpopulated. We know this because they are destroying Mother Nature's marshes in the far north of Canada. This is a fact. The reasons for this are also know - too much feed during migration, and the native cull on the breeding ground, which used to happen for thousands of years, no longer happens, thanks to the Canadian government ending the practice. Over-population leading to disease is not conjecture, it happens with all animals, including humans. It's a fact. Ever heard of the 1918 flu pandemic? Millions of people died. Ever heard of bird flu? It's real. Bad for birds. Bad for people. Birds have no defense against the teeth and claws of wolf. But the wolf needs to get close enough. This is called 'cunning' not cowardice. Hunter are no cowards, god ones are cunning predators.

  • @crowflieshigh

    @crowflieshigh

    Blair James, Nature doesn't destroy nature. Man destroys nature. You're blaming birds for man's destruction of nature because it's a way of scapegoating the problem so you don't have to deal with the real problem. The avian flu has been shown, through science, to be caused by humans, specifically through excessive farming of livestock and primarily through the farming of chickens. You're holding your child in that photo and you love your kid but you have zero respect for nature that also has offspring and joy for their offspring. You're a coward.

  • @blairjames414

    @blairjames414

    8 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it does. Watch the docs. Not scape-goating, the imbalance was caused by humans interfering with a good system. However, as it is out of balance, it needs to be corrected. Avian flu: is a naturally occurring pathogen, actually there are a few types. Over population in any environment often leads to disease - it's nature's way. By-the-way - why do you separate humans and nature - you do realize we are PART of nature not APART from it. Or don't you believe in evolution? Coward? Don't get that part. Our common ancestors hunted and ate to survive, just as some of us do. Nothing to do with courage.

    It was nice reading the comments that you ate and donated the birds. I live in Arkansas I have seen 10acers just covered with Snow Geese where u couldn't put another one in the flock on the ground. We moved here in 06 and we where told they are not good eating. Could you tell us about the flavor Please.

    I like mine in a nice stew in a crock pot, or blackened. You can also braise them in lemon/butter/garlic and serve with asparagus, saffron rice and cornbread. They also make excellent jerky.

    Awesome hunt! How many shells are you allowed to have loaded in your shotgun while hunting these birds? Here in Canada we are only allowed 3 shells in the gun to hunt migratory birds. If you look at the hunter shooting from 12:05 - 12:13, he distinctly fires 4 shots one after the other from a semi-auto shotgun. Just curious what the laws are in the U.S. I would get sent down the river if I got caught doing that in Canada ;-).

    normally only 3 but during the spring conservation season Tue is no limit on the amount of shells in your gun..some guys use plug extenders and get 8 or wheels in there gun

    You CAN remove the 3 shot plug limiter during the special conservation season in the US. There might be a couple of states holding out, not sure. Need to be a lawyer to understand some of the stuff they put in the regulations.

    Wow you must have been putting up decoys from 3am. We have a magpie goose in Australia, which is a tropical bird, I think the eggs are more sought after than the birds Then there is the Cape Barron goose which is southern wetland bird, big and heavy. But these snow geese are really inquisitive and circle around your decoys, I've never seen such big flocks. Good hunt do they eat well, I've found goose a bit rich, sure would like to hunt and sample.

    Sounds like you have some interesting geese in Australia, nothing like what we have. Snow geese are very hard to decoy they will circle and circle looking for something wrong with our set up. Your spread has be almost perfect if you want to kill them. They taste ok, there not the best tasting meat by any means. Come to the United States sometime and hunt with us we kill ducks and Canada gesse as well!

    j german droning the snow goose conservation season you can shoot as many rounds as you can get in your gun. Some guys even buy magazine extenders which allow you to put like 10 rounds in a single gun..no limit on birds either

    Snow geese are edible game birds. They can be eaten, but with 116 dead birds, its going to take them a while to clean them all up.

    We eat as many as they will let us keep, but the rest go to programs like 'Hunters for the Hungry' that provide the cleaned (paid for by the hunters I might add) and packaged birds to families in need. Nothing goes to waste, at least not on any of the hunts I've ever gone on. There's usually a processing facility (more jobs!) close by, that gets the tagged birds (each bird must be accounted for and assigned to a licensee) and for a nominal fee will pluck, clean, package and freeze them.

    At least one of the hunters appears to fire off 4-5 shots fairly quickly... no plug in magazine. Illegal or is there special dispensation for conservation hunts / spring snow geese?
