Spring Bushcraft & Camping at the Long-term Shelter - Camp Firlend

Ойын-сауық

Check Out my Latest Trip in the Rocky Mountains Here:
• Camping in the Canadia...
In this video, I head out to the long-term camp for a solo overnighter for the first time in months. Although it was soaking wet the majority of the time, and I had to wait out a few heavy rain falls, it was a great trip for the dog and I. I cooked some homemade food; some jambalaya, and my grandfather's chilli, which turned out quite nice. I also demonstrated how I clean my cook set after use when out in the woods. Sand does the trick, as long as you can dust it off well afterwards. Later on, I did some bushcraft using the refuse left by someone ages ago. I found what looked like an older flower-pot, and ended up using it as a bucket for transporting sand to lay around the fire to create a layer between the ground and possible embers/sparks that may fall there. Enjoy the video everyone!

thank you for the natural sound, for not slathering your video with strumming guitars, thank you for not jabbering on about your tools, skills, trips....I subbed for all these reasons. I am enjoying the peace and quiet of the woods. looking forward to more visits to your superb shelter.

When you cleaned the pot with sand/dirt, did you wash it with water or just wiped it with a cloth? I'm asking this because, on your 2nd day, the pot did not have any sand/dirt in it.

Good basic camp out with a useful skills review. Refreshing to see a bushcraft guy who will show himself reading and learning while out in the woods.

Great build. A helpful suggestion, grab another set of those size tarps. I would double up to get double air insulation. and for added water proofing. Thats a trick I learned here where I am in the Smoky Mountains because it rains a lot. Ive camped all over the Rockies too, you could benefit from this tip.

Thank you! The rain on the tarp was nice until it was an absolute down-poor in the middle of the night hahah. I've been going a bit crazy with canning, dehydrating, and also hard tack lately. It's addictive to fill a shelf with food like that, even better to eat it. Those lanterns, if you're lucky, can be found extremely cheap. We found another one locally for just 65$ :). It's a Adlake Kerro Canadian Pacific Railway lantern, the one I use happens to be my grandfathers.

This is one of the nicest well constructed and designed shelters on You Tube. Your dog is so cool, lying on the ground with his legs crossed and just chillin'...so quiet, too. Your load out must have been in the high 40's with all those mason jars of food. I noticed you didn't shake your blanket before rolling it up. I'd be afraid of bringing home ticks, spiders and other creepy little insects. Great video. Very enjoyable, Nicholas.

Thank you! The tarps are lacking however. She's a really good dog, she usually just sits and guards well I'm at the camp. It was probably more around 30, everything else I bring is usually pretty light haha. The walk into camp is short anyways so I don't mind the extra weight :). Thankfully I've never even seen a tick, we rarely have any here, if any at all haha. Thanks for the comment!

That's great what you built there. In Germany, building something in the forest is forbidden by law. I am really jealous. If I could, I would build something like that. But even if you own a forest you have to get permission for that and that is very difficult. 90 percent of all applications do not give you permission. Sometimes I regret living in Germany. Thank you for sharing your experience and work here. Keep it up. Always give everything, but never give up. Greetings from Germany. Oh, one more question, what is this belt you are wearing? Do you have a link for that? Thank you

Thank you. I've heard about it there, it's very unfortunate that you're limited so much. The belt is an old miners belt, used for holding batteries or something similar up. I have never seen a belt similar to it sadly

Question? Since U made that nice closed-off bedroom that U don't use, in winter. Y don't U make a nice little stone fireplace in the corner = nice & warm sleeping at -40F if U use bubble foil insulation to cover the walls & roof & a canvas roll-up door...

The camp looks great, it still holds up very nice! Have you ever thought about using the moss as roofing? Or is that not an option there? The video looks good, I like all the different frames! I always wonder why you use the matches for your lantern instead of a little stick from the fire? Hope you have a nice trip! Joshua

Thanks. I have, that was actually the original plan, but we never got around to it. It worked out however because if we had the weight of wet moss, and then snow on top of it, the shelter would have collapsed without a doubt. I have never thought about just using the fire hahaha, I'll do that next time instead of wasting my matches

I love a good kerosene lantern. I prefer them over just about any artificial light well in the woods, but sadly they're heavy and can't be lugged everywhere.

I wish! I'm honestly horrible at small tasks like that. I have the patience but am too much of a perfectionist. I'd end up just bothering me if I screwed up even a tiny bit hahaha. I'll have to learn however.

It's fantastic you built, and have this shelter and continue to build on it. Great video as always, but the one thing I may have done differently is in regards to the sand behind the fire pit rocks. Obviously from my pov here on a computer screen I can't see the type of sand it is, but some sand will retain water and since it's actually higher than what you scrape out of pit, you may be surrounding the backside of the pit with a sponge for when it rains.... Again very hard for me to see the type of sand, but I highly appreciate the fire retardant application.

Thank you! I didn't even think of that, if it does I hope it wont do much. My fire-pit usually puddles up anyways in the rain haha

You just have to build it big enough to the point where it puts out enough heat to evaporate the rain before it lands on it. Aside from that, I'm not sure

I think I would like to see you camp for a longer time, do you fish or hunt? Canoeing? Have your dad come along! I would love to! But there's many things restricting me from being out there for longer periods then 2 - 3 days sadly. I do fish, hunt, and I actually just bought a canoe to do both out of haha. Wood would be nice, yes, I'd imagine that the shelter would be upgraded and improved as time went on well you lived out there. This shelter was more built as an execution of an idea I had for a long-term shelter. It's more just used as a camp I visit now and then :). Comet usually sleeps about anywhere she can
