Spraying Raptor Liner through cheap HVLP gun. Awesome results.

Ойын-сауық

Spraying my inner fenders with Raptor Liner. I'm using my Harbor Freight HVLP drilled to 2mm. 35-40psi. Raptor is mixed slightly slower and a little thinner. Very happy with the results.
EDIT:
A viewer pointed out that I did not record mixing the hardener. After rewatching, that's absolutely true. Though I didn't film it, it is mixed 3:1, with some reducer.

    Interesting method. I’ve just sprayed my entire truck with raptor and put it on my channel. Upol only recommend a maximum of 10-15% thinners and you went with 30% and it seemed much easier to spray than I found. I struggled to get it through the gun in a decent pattern at 10%

    I just watched your raptor videos. At the end, it seems you got a good result. I couldn't tell what orifice your HVLP was. Mine started life as 1.4mm but drilled to 2.0. Even at 2.0, my pressure was 40 or so. Also, a few other settings make a difference. The knob by the air hose is for air/fluid volume. That should be at maximum (out). The large knob by the trigger is to set the pattern. This is your preference, but bigger means "smoother" for Raptor. I think you got a terrific result with a small compressor!

    If you have a 1.2/1.3 LVLP gun instead, bang up the pressure a bit - run at 50 or 60 psi. Feed the stuff into the cup through a 100 micron disposable sieve to get the chunks out. 30% reducer/thinner works nice. It will spray on like silk - textured silk. 4:1 works best as the initial material/hardener ratio. Use a regular size gun - this video shows why - that gun is struggling badly, it's too small in the nozzle/airways for such a heavy material. Dial the fan back on your gun if needs be - run it my way and it is easy. Big gun, higher pressure, more reducer - goes on fast like silk. ;-)

  • @jamesward5721

    @jamesward5721

    Жыл бұрын

    I tried drilled btw - it works, but the juice is not worth the squeeze - just dial up the pressure & filter the paint into the cup - Bingo. :-) 80% of success with this material happens in the mixing - mix twice as long as you think you ought.

I've zero complaints about the Voilamart (the missus bought it as a gift for me), I was a bit skeptical at first, but now it is my go-to just for the lack of billowing overspray & the fact it lays paint on nice. I see a lot of good guys on here raving about other makes of LVLP, but they are hard to get here - she got the Voilamart off Amazon - was just a case of eeny meeny miney mo/fastest delivery/lowest price as she doesn't know much about paint-guns - turned out to be a good pick. Here, I've been going just a layer beyond this ^^ lately - because often the "Texture" with bedliner is too meaty - I've been using 2k acrylic that costs about €170 a gallon (do the maths, that's 5l, or €34 a liter plus the cost of hardener). "Trick" is to spray a drop-coat with the gun held at about 18" from the panel, let that drop-coat flash off for a bit. Bang, you have created "Texture" that imitates fine bedliner. I then spray a wet-coat over that, then another wet on wet coat. Let it all go off, then clear coat it with 2 coats. Boom - you've got the same effect as bedliner but waay more subtle & looks waaay cooler irl. The huge Upside is you can make any colour you can imagine - I like to mix my own shades so the paintjob doesn't look like anything else you will see anywhere. Take Military Olive as an example - I have a big card sprayed out with every shade varying from the absolutest lightest Olive through to close to black-olive - so customers can just point out the shade they like best. Black-olive is a very cool colour to shoot as it "flips" with the light - in low light, it looks jet black, but in sunlight it shows real dark olive - just looks drop-dead cool on a vehicle when its done & a clear-coat is applied. You get the same texture effect, but much classier & unusual. Just my 2c - I love experimenting with paint finishes that look different.
