Spraying Dark Colours Over Mdf | Using Interior Household Paints | Airless Sprayer | EP#54

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Alright all?
I'm spraying a Farrow and Ball colour called Railings, and colour matched by Johnstones.
Using my Graco 695 Electric Airless Sprayer and a fine finish tip.
Going straight in with Eggshell, no primers or undercoat, giving me a fantastic durable finish.
Enjoy
Ryan

Hey there! I noticed you mentioned the challenge of MDF grain rising up when spray painting. A trick I've found helpful is applying a light spray coat of primer, followed by a second coat within minutes. Let it dry until it's ready to sand, and you'll be able to knock down those pesky grain textures. After that, apply another coat of primer generously. When you sand the final layer, you should achieve a super smooth surface without any noticeable grain. This sets the perfect base for a top coat. Two coats of your preferred top coat, especially if it's a satin finish, should give you that sleek and smooth buttery look you're aiming for. Happy painting! , From Blue Spray Painting .

I have bought an Grace airless sprayer on the back of your videos Ryan, keep up the good work and the superb content!! although I am nervous about spraying furniture for the first time, your advice & knowledge has given me the courage to give it a go, one question though, how long can you keep paint in the sprayer for without having to clean the machine through? Do you do one coat and clean the machine? Or can you spray all your panels with the first coat and let it dry, leaving the paint still in the sprayer for an hour or two until the panels are dry enough for another coat? PS I have designed and built the wardrobes based on your videos and they are looking great so far!! Just don’t want to mess it up with the paint finish! 😂

Silk , when sprayed via airless is an extremely tough finish, you wouldn't have thought it but I can't really fault it. I sometimes spray mdf with hard wearing matt too when a customer want a matt finish, again tougher than you think when sprayed on one very durable 👍

Great vid. In previous videos I'm sure you have used 3.16 tips, why the change? A guide on what tips to use when would be useful including general spraying e.g. walls, skirting, door frames etc. Something I hadn't realised until recently is Johnstones stores have the license to make up F&B, Dulux etc colours obviously in the Johnstones manufactured paint. I've read elsewhere that F&B manufactured paint can be a real pain to work with.

I may of used a 310 tip, basically a slightly smaller fan. There are a few websites on tip sizes, but I mainly use a 10 (310/410). Yes I always colour match most big brand names. There's an online company called the paint shed, it has the cheapest branded paint I can find anywhere and also colour matches. I used them recently for a few Johnstones paints😁

Thank you! Mostly panels used to get stacked, sanded, painted then split the plie apart. We would 5hen go around with the radius cutter 1.6mm, on everything, dust down then give the panel 1 coat of paint ( both faces if needed ,like a door) Once dry we'd bring back in workshop, sanded all faces with 240 lightly, also hand sand inside any shaker paneling again with 240. We've tried a few ways of sanding the radius edge. We've tried 240 which works well and we've also tried finer paper like 320 or higher. The corners do sometimes slightly fluff up and found sanding arrises with finer paper better. In a few weeks or so I'll have a video comparing all materials... standard mdf, Mr mdf, hidro, and how they paint etc. I've never tried hidro but need to the the samples to try it out

No mate, I’m new to the finishing side of spraying, I’ve got a gxff and only normally spray eggshell sheen levels, but tried some gloss on some doors and like you said it shows up any slight orange peel which you wouldn’t notice on your lower sheen levels. Heard a few people say they prewarm the paint which will help make the paint flow through the gun and lay out better.

I've used solvent a few times ( when the customer bought be the wrong paint lol) Sprayed absolutely fine and definitely gives perfectly flat finish, mainly as there is no water to raise the grain. But it takes at least a day to dry each coat and when spraying doors 3 - 4 coats both sides, you can see why i dont use solvent. I've not tried gloss, I think this will show up even the smallest of imperfection but have only tried eggshell. Overall finish is flatter than the water based for sure 👍

  • @sicpac66t

    @sicpac66t

    3 жыл бұрын

I wouldn't recommend solvent based if your gonna put water based through again. I've tried all them brands and the difference if you switch to a more industrial paint. Sayerlack.renner. you will achieve a much better finish with durability being far greater. I always use primer as whatever your board looks like before top coat it will show through. The Sayerlack primer is about £140 for 25kg and top coat is more like £250 for 25kg. You can buy 5ltr tins also. Medite MDF is ok if it's moisture resistant. But hidrofugo is much better. Hardly any grain residing at all. That's why priming is best to do to eliminate that first before top coat. I use the gx21 with a 210 or 310 tip. Paintable edge band is a great way to get perfect edges without so the sanding and sealing etc.

Start low and work your way up until you don't get tails any more ( line either side of the spray pattern ). Stir paint or shake to mix and thats it, I don't thin down. Recently I've been having problems where I've been spraying tails so I have my pressure around 1600 - 1800 with a 310 tip. Never really had these problems before and have always sprayed at the lower pressure with no probs. Just test low and see what happens and go from there 👌👌

@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop I spray 2k polyurethane at least 4 days a week and have so for last 6 months but watching your videos still give me massive tips! Most of our work is in London even though we are based in Chester. Maybe if ok with you when I deliver down there next I can pop in?
