I remember graduating in that room and getting my diploma. Word of advice to anyone training for probie school- LOOSE AS MUCH WEIGHT AS YOU CAN BEFORE YOU GET SWORN IN!!!!!! Don’t “get all buff 💪”!!!!! Just eat healthy, loose weight, start running, push ups, sit ups, squats. get used to every muscle in your body hurting. Get all your affairs in order before you start probie school. so that your brain can concentrate only on all of this important information given out to you at the Rock that could very well save your life one day. Tell all your family, friends, loved ones that this is now your career and if you don’t maintain the average academic and physical standards that you will be dropped from the program (a nice word for FIRED). Good luck to anyone starting FDNY probie or EMS school and please stay safe. It’s a very dangerous job. Make it to retirement like myself and enjoy your life.

Can you imagine how much better the fire service as a whole would be if every department had facilities like the FDNY to train their members. Great series so far.

Or you know just making them competent basic firefighters instead of just the basic book knowledge that most training programs push.

Very insightful. Chief Leeb oozes passion and insight. It was also great to see the son of a legend continuing his old mans legacy and the continuing demand for adaption, preparation and execution. Well done Pete on the production side. Looking forward to pt 3.

Hi guys!! I just watched this part 2 !! Thank you again, as it is all so interesting!! 👏👏Chief Leeb is really awesome and so knowledgeable and passionate about the training!! What a great man!! I can’t quite believe this myself, but at this year’s Family Day (2/26/2022) my older son and I( not a firefighter) thanked the FDNY “top brass😉” and they were so kind and offered to take a photo with us!!! So my older son and I have photos with the Chief and Lt. Hodgens and the Acting Commissioner.. We really did not know exactly who anyone was at this time,, because it was just such a joy filled day for all of us!! As my son was progressing through the Academy, both him and I just took it one day at a time and as my son always said, “Mom, I take nothing for granted, I am not a firefighter yet!! I still have much to do and learn!! “” Thanks to your video,? I can see that this amazing training place and this amazing Chief Leeb follows the wonderful attitude that learning never stops !! 😊 a wonderful thought for all, civilians too!!! I very much enjoyed seeing when you were probies and graduating!! God’s blessings to you both and your dear families!! God’s blessings to all first responders!! ❤️🚒🚒🚒🇺🇸🇺🇸✝️

Great video fellas! Really interesting to see all the different areas and training props. Good job on the editing Pete. Was great to see the video of probie Lou and really special to see him reminiscing about his time as a recruit. I'm over in the UK, but the whole 'scrounging' materials for training thing, is the same the world over! Beg, steal borrow! Good job again.

My great grandfather was NYFD and was awarded the Bennett medal in 1904 (since renamed to the top fire operations medal). Every year his name is printed in the awards program and every year it is misspelled. My understanding and from the newspaper clips my family has he saved a kid from a fire cut was badly burned and a probie did not make it. I wish I could get his name corrected in the program

Can anyone tell me about how one gets assigned to a company after probie school? What determines if you get assigned to an Engine company, or Truck company? Is there a bid system, luck of the draw? Also, the numbers on the leather front below the company ID, is that the employee number, and is that assigned by the City, or is that your last four of your social for example. Thanks.

Not sure if this has changed or a variation of it, but each proby gets to choose I think 3 divisions in order of preference. Then you are assigned a house from within 1 of those divisions usually. If you grad. top of the class I believe you get to choose you’re house. As far as how they choose the house you get assigned, I am not sure what they go by. The numbers on our front pieces beneath our company number is our badge numbers assigned by the city.
