Doug and Augie should be in the rock and roll hall of fame.
I'm almost 70 years old, and I grew up in San Antonio. One of my favorite memories was spinning around with my kids in our front yard as we listened to Doug Sahm. He wasn't only a Texas musician, he was part of the joy of being a Texan.

I'm 68 from TN and we loved Doug. In 1972 i spent about 8 weeks in San Antonio at Lackland AFB. Went through there a couple years ago and they wouldn't let me on the base and i spent 6 years in USAF and TANG.

@@anthonyfoutch3152 San Antonio was the heart of a variety of music. There was a jazz group who played near the river, and both Hispanic music and German music made the the accordion an integral part of Texas music. I feel blessed to have been born there and experienced the SA musical culture.

@@MidEastSusu I live near Nashville TN I know what you mean. In about 1972 i went to see my friends at UT Knoxville dorms. My friend played Is Anybody Going To San Antone by Doug Sahm. I went out and bought the album the next day then anything else by Doug. We thought his last name was pronounced Sam though.

Nobody had soul like old Dougie did. I wish I could have met him. Doug died when I was 12, and I did not make it to Texas until I was 22. Doug's music will never die. He is a Texas legend. ,

Doug Sahm was a Cosmic Cowboy. Such an insanely brilliant artist. So soulful, so rock n roll, so multicultural, yet such a damn Texan. Wonderful documentary!!! Also yes Shandon Sahm who is definitely an accomplished artists by his own right made an album of his Dad’s songs, freaking brilliant ❤️

Thanks for your Tribute to the Great Doug Sahm. I first heard him in, around, 1968, with the album Mendocino. Beautiful stuff that matched my musical heroes Traffic, Procol Harum and the Beatles. Sir Doug was all the way up there. Shortly after that I bought a few more of the Quintet's albums for $2.99. Man those songs on the later albums. Song of Everything ! Be Real ! In the Dark! Pretty Flower! I saw him a few times in New York City with the Tornadoes at The Lone Star Cafe. Genius. Right to the Heart. Cheers

I’ve been a Doug Sahm fan for a long time. I’am not from Texas, I’am from the mid-west, but I remember him coming through and playing at our bowling alley (It was a big place) years ago. At the time, I was into rock and he sounded a little too country for me but did see that he was a talented guy. Over the years I don’t thing he’s gotten the recognition he deserves. Reading the reviews here someone called Doug a “Cosmic Cowboy,” he was that, for sure. I kind of think of him as the Dylan from the south because, like Dylan, he was so talented that he could adapt to the music that was popular at the time and, on top of that, I really liked his voice.
Doug had a presence and so much charisma!
Interesting to hear this! I´m a Swedish fan of Doug Sahm and the Texas Tornados. I was a friend of a Swedish countrysinger, Red Jenkins who sadly passed away last year. Red and his wife Gunilla, who worked for Sonet recording company, knew Doug very well, and when Doug was in Sweden he stayed sometimes in Reds apartment in Stockholm. They told me a lot of stories about Doug, which was fun to hear. I really miss them both,,,,

Love Doug Sahm. Listened to the Sir Douglas Quintet in the 60s. Twice saw the Texas Tornados in Seattle. Check out Doug's "The last real Texas blues band" CD for a wonderful tour through Texas blues legendary songs and musicians. RIP Doug Sahm. You are sorely missed my friend.

Doug was a great and total musician , he did it all should have seen him at Antones or Soap Creek Saloon
San Antonio was on the Chitlin Circuit and Doug lived close by to a club that featured the likes of Bobby Blue Bland and all the great rhythm and blues acts of the early 60s. He soaked it all in like focaccia and olive oil.
Love me some Doug Sahm . I met some of his family from New Braunfels, Tx. He's so badass TexMex!! 😍

Crazy to me that as a music nerd I have just come across Doug Sahm in my 40's. And that was just by luck coming across a couple vinyls that I took a chance on. Side note, Steve Earle made some great comments about Doug Sahm on his show this week while interviewing Bill Kirchen and Ray Benson. What a great musician and how lucky we are to have the internet to catch up on things we missed.

I too am from San Antonio and I remember listening to his music on the radio when I was a young boy in the early seventies!
man, I didn't even know who they were when they did the 'AUSTIN CITY LIMITS'. I probably just got out of high school. I loved rock/blues, and 50's stuff. when he does the ELVIS/Freddie Fender ,etc. medley, that's priceless. I taped it in the primitive '70's way w/ a hand held mic on a tape recorder. sort of lay the wire over the top of the TV 'til it's next to the volume speaker .had the TV on not so loud, so the play back wouldn't be blaring , and I could turn it up from there, sounding decent loud. a mono-concert. if I'd a known KZread would come along, I'd have dug the future, probably not tape stuff, all of which is now here on YT. damn, shows I was at, are here.
He was a brilliant muscician & a really cool cat.
That’s not Doug, the photo of the young boy shaking hands with Hank.

My fav!
Ivw been listening to Doug Sahm since 70 or 71. I had several original albums by him but sadly I lost them. There is a great documentary about him but I can't find it anymore.
Funny he mentioned he was betw😢 Willie Nelson and The Grateful Dead, meaning he was all over the place musically. The Grateful Dead themselves were all over the place combining rock, country, jazz, funk etc.
Another favourite artist of mine Nick Lowe must of been inspired by Doug Sahm with his Half a boy half a man song

@@AsTheTableTurns Oh then you’re in for a treat as his career has a few different stages. The starting point should be his debut Pure POP for now People on the famous record label Stiff Records who Nick Lowe was responsible for producing the UKs first Punk album by the Damned and the early Elvis Costello albums. At the same time he was in an absolute power group called Rockpile with Dave Edmunds and Dire Straits drummer. His best work though was after reinventing himself as an older man with the album Impossible Bird being the start of a trilogy of similar albums. The KZread video about the writing of a song called “the beast in me” covered by Jonny Cash is as funny as it gets. On the Nick Lowe Rabbit hole there’s a guy called Jim Ford who Nick Lowe championed as the most funkiest Country singer/songwriter around with his album Harlan County that featured Dr John, Leon Russell and other contemporaries of Doug Sahm that was made with a blank chequebook and a blizzard of cocaine. I promise you will like Harlan County

Listen to Last Great Texas Blues Band
Think of The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five and The Stones In that chronological order. The Vox organ was first given mass appeal by their record 18 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show starting one month after the Beatles arrived. Their string of hits morphed with the Beatles and later the Stones but the DC5 put a big stamp on British Invasion music and for a few years rivaled the Beatles.
