If you are letting your dumbbells fall after a dumbbell bench press, either you never learned the proper techniques for handling heavy dumbells or you are an ego lifter handling weights that you shouldn't be handling. Also, there are reasons why you wouldn't let your dumbbells fall, especially if you have a home gym setup. 1. You live in an apartment and you don't want to wake up someday with your downstairs neighbor with a shotgun at your front door. 2. You don't want to damage your floors (a wild idea, I know) 3. You don't want to damage your dumbbells. This is more an issue if you bought one of those adjustable weight dumbbells such as powerblocks or bowflex which are not meant to be thrown.

One problem is of how to get heavy dumbbells into starting position without injuring yourself. In that case the system works like a dumbbell rack. Furthermore it is better than that because you don't need to unrack the dumbbells, i.e. it has similar advantages like a monolift for barbells (this is the second problem it solves). The third problem it solve is that it fixes the dumbbells at any point on the lift if you fail, so there is no need anymore to drop the dumbbells to the floor this safes equipment (i.e. for example if you don't have a rubber flooring and rubber dumbbells).

However for the first problem you can simply use powerhooks (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mYqe2NF9pJmthMY.html) or just lashing straps from the hardware store.

I have had the Spot Grips for a few months now. I took a gamble and bought them and got them shipped all the way out to New Zealand. I was looking for a way to safely get dumbbells over a 100lb into position. Now I know the critics will say that you should just be able to muscle them into position and that has an element of truth to it. You can almost always do that. Note I said almost. The trick with risk is you not only consider the likely hood of a problem but the seriousness of its occurrence. In other words I could almost always get a 100lb dumbbell into position but occasionally I risk failing. Now failing can mean a torn shoulder rotator cuff, a hole in the flooring or a very serious facial injury. The next problem is if you want to press heavy you need to get into position with the dumbbell - tight upper back, arch etc. I find it hard to lay back onto a flat bench with 100lbers and achieve a perfect setup each time. With the spotgrips I position myself under the dumbbells and get set up and tight. I then press the dumbbells up before releasing the lock (you don't want to release the lock before you have the weight). The results for me have been great. For years my maximum flat bench was 100lb dumbbell presses and in the last couple of months I have progressed to 125lb. These aren't for everyone and the price is a barrier. If you don't do heavy dumbbell work I don't see you wanting these. That said if you do and you are looking for a solution to the issues with pressing the bigger dumbbells then these are really worth considering. $500 would buy a lot of other gear but it won't go far in paying for shoulder or pec surgery. It sure as hell won't pay for serious cost of facial reconstructive surgery either. It will also preserve your floors and dumbbells if you don't have to keep dumping them.

I don't understand all the comments saying "just let go". In my experience the problem is not with dumping the dumbbells, it's with getting them into position in the first place. With flat bench it's not so much of an issue, but with inclined DB presses, or shoulder presses, the limiting factor is getting them into position. If I go light enough that I don't risk shoulder injury (I have injured my shoulder in the past doing exactly this), I can usually bang out 12 to 15 reps. I'd like to be able to go heavy enough that I'm only able to do 6 to 8 reps. For those saying "just get stronger" or "don't ego lift" - these are stupid statements to make that clearly demonstrate that you don't understand the problem. No matter HOW strong you get on an incline bench of overhead press, the weakest part of the movement will always be when the dumbbells are below shoulder height before you get them into position - so "get stronger" is a stupid statement to make. And don't "ego lift" - I'm 35 years old and work out at home. Alone. No ego lifting here - but I'd like to lift weight that puts me into the rep ranges that I'm looking for. So these things absolutely DO address a real problem. The question is, do they work well and are they worth the money? For me, they look awkward and I worry about the dumbbells wanting to tip due to the high center of gravity. Plus $500 is a tough pill to swallow.

I received it today on 11-4-2021 even though the website said to expect a 4 to 5-week delivery delay. I very pleased with my purchase, because they were easy to set up and they work great. Each spot grip weighs 10 lbs, but each one makes lifting heavy dumbbells easier because I don't have to carry, clean, or position myself with heavy dumbbells before benching, pressing, or squatting with them. They can also be used with barbells. I highly recommend them for anyone wanting to enhance the quality and safety of his or her home gym.

VERY expensive yes. Coop glossed over what I see as a major selling point which is getting the DBs set to start the exercise instead of pulling them up to your knees and then kicking them up to your shoulder. He also loaded them in a very weird way. I would just put the DB on the bench or floor and pull the hook down to it instead of placing a heavy dumbbell into a swinging hook.

The Spot Grips are now a must have in my home gym. Are they expensive? ....I guess the answer is yes, but the benefits out weigh the cost by a wide margin in my opinion. As someone that uses a lot of dumbbells movements in their workout I find them to be a big plus. I hated the lean back with heavy dumbbells to bench, and I hated the clean and jerk to do shoulder presses. Spot Grips reduce the chance of injury obviously. I dont have to worry about failing on a rep - tossing the dumbbell and either messing up my equipment and/or my floor. I just let go and walk away. I have seen some of the comments below and people seem to comment on things they dont know anything about just because they can, dont want to spend the money, dont understand it, or whatever. I know some of the Bro's (they bench on Monday) are ok with tossing dumbbells on the gym floor. Well the awesome thing about that is that they arent Bobby Bro's dumbbells, or Bobby Bro's floor. So what does he give a rats ass about either one? So lighten up Brotato Chip So I can lift more with peace of mind without worrying about getting injured while taking a set to failure or destroying my equipment or my floor. Yeah sounds like a real waste of money.

However for the price I would expect that it should work for both, dumbbells and barbells equally well (and I guess that it doesn't really work for barbells) furthermore the price is so high that the system should also work for oly lift.

I have these and can answer your question. All you have to do is let go and the barbell won't be pressing anymore. Set your safety straps on as well so that the end is protecting your neck but not impeding your press, and you're golden. It's very easy to get out from under the bar since you can push the bar forward a little and slide out.

500 bucks?? Insane!! I drive a bus and that locking system looks like the one used to secure wheelchairs. To me it looks like your grip is thrown off since you have to wrap around the lever. Not a fan at all. Great review Coop...keep them coming.

If you have an expensive set of adjustable dumbbells that will likely get damaged when dropped , these would be useful. Though real talk , you better have everything you need already in your home gym , rack , barbell, plates , nice set of dumbbells , cardio machine once there’s nothing left to buy and you see a use for this , then maybe.

Here's the NUMBER ONE problem -- COST. That should not be a $500 product. It should barely be a $250 product. They're trying to exploit customers for their R&D costs. They should have farmed investors better, and eaten more of that. I could be wrong, but i doubt they'll get a lot of institutional buyers. And at anything over $300, they won't get enough retail customers. They need better marketing advice. I love safety knick knacks, and I truly do appreciate the value of safety gear in preventing expensive and traumatic injuries. And I can afford it without proverbially putting a child to work in the Dickensian workhouses. But at this price, I just can't respect myself. It's off the table for me at anything over the $300s. And I feel confident I'm speaking for a lot of garage gym users.

Love these. Yes they are pricey. 1. I have a 110 inch rack and they will go all the way to the ground to load very heavy dumbells. I have loaded up to 130 lbs no issues. Recommending loading from outside in rather than the way coop did (inside out). Also the 10lb weight is only noticeable if the weight loaded is very light. With 50 plus lbs, then additional 10 lbs is not noticeable. If the price was lower, these things would fly off the shelf.

Agreed, far too expensive. I have similar DIY system w the wide nylon. You don't get the slack pulled up as you press towards the device nor the instant stop but you still get that safety at the bottom of the lift if you need to bail. Cost about 50 bucks for overkill... cool idea though, would purchase if they made the compartment longer than tall (weight over top would be super annoying) and dropped the price down to sub 300. Guessing USA made for that price? Thanks Coop!

I can see why this doesn't work for quite a few people (stupid high price tag, solid build with cheap stickers for logo, etc.), nonetheless it's been great for me. I live in an apartment and I can't just drop the weights without someone complaining to the front office about all the noise. As for someone spotting me, lol, no one will do that where I'm at. My roommates aren't interested in working out, spotting, etc. It is what it is, I guess. Also, I have something wrong with my tendon in my right arm, and every time in the past I've tried getting into dumbbell chest press position, I felt pain in the crook of my arm. With these bad bois, I can chest press with no pain at all. I love it! That said, I could see big issues down the line if the price doesn't come down. Competitors like Titan Fitness might be able to build something like this for way cheaper. Then those who were on the fence, with similar issues like me, may buy the cheaper alternative. Time will tell...

Like concept and safety aspects of this device but the price point is very high now $540 when you to their site. A max price point should around $199 retail with sale price at $99. I use power blocks which are not setup to be dropped like a regular dumbbell and why I see the value is a device like this when trying to lift heavy with a dumbbell.

    1) Isn't it basically a seat belt for dumbbells? 2) Why would anyone want to max out on DBs? You got barbells to build your strength. Considering from a purely effectiveness-focused persective, DBs can help you build up some of the stabilizing muscles. But if you wanna build strength, you need barbells.

This should work (ring hanger or a good pullup bar), since in case of failure it stops immediatly you don't have do deaccelerate the dumbbell which would cause very high forces. Check the specs of the ring hanger or pullup bar and of the screws etc. before doing it.

Don’t understand where all the hate comes from in other review commentaries. Claim it’s not new innovation, just seat belt material, too expensive. I’m in my 50’s and safety with keeping shoulders healthy is paramount. Seat belt material ? - why not - sounds like a good choice of material. Not innovative? - way cleaner than Shermwork and no extra bolts. Expensive? Yes but let’s consider other alternatives. DB spotter stands cost the same if not 2-3 times more for made USA. Rack trays from Black widow costs $400 shipped. Both of these help position DBs but no safety in movement. My only concern is how long will the mechanism last and hold up. To me, I’m getting more interested considering these alternatives
