    Watching this was a real blast from the past for me, I was a press photographer for 18 years and covered thousands of footy matches over the years! Must have been so strange to have the stadium almost to yourself and so quiet too. I'd forgotten how hectic it is taking pictures, editing and then sending images back to the sports desk. Fabulous shots by the way 🤩⚽

    Using a Canon 1D and a 400mm F2.8 lens must be an absolute dream. I shoot way, way down the leagues at Chadwell Heath Spartans FC in the Essex Alliance League Division 1 and I just love to see how the professionals do it. You must be using about £20k worth of kit at least here, must be great to use that kind of equipment? I really enjoyed watching this and will be watching some of your other stuff. Thanks. Neil

    Enjoyed that Mark - I've done fourteen games up here in Scotland since the restart and you do get used to there being no crowds, but it's very different - In particular photographing Celtic in an empty stadium and being in Hearts ground on opening day of their season with no fans was truly strange. In some ways it's a little easier - parking in particular and ability to try different remote angles is nice - but it's not the same experience. I've found goal celebrations are often muted or back towards the centre circle rather than towards where the fans would be normally and you don't get the players celebrating towards the fans at full time or fans raging at a defeat to up your quota of useable pics on a low action day. I've also found out that clubs are keen to shut down stadiums as quickly as possible after games - I've sent most of my post match stuff from the car a few times. Hopefully we get fans back in before the end of the season - it's not the same. Thanks for doing this vlog though, I've been asked a few times what it's like inside a locked down stadium and you've pretty much shown it - and 36.2° is the only correct temperature.

  • @MarkKerton

    @MarkKerton

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching David. I did laugh at the 36.2 being the only temp🤣 It was all very different for sure. Obviously I expected it would be different but it really brought it home to me how vital fans are to bring the game and my job to life! Let’s just hope they can sort this rumoured vaccine out and get our whole lives back to normal soon! Keep safe David and all the best for the rest of the season👍🏻

    Compared to yourselves down south, we up here in Scotland have no access on field side, us Scots togs must stay behind the kickboards. Also, we are not allowed to have team sheets, touch the ball, and if we want to change positions during half time we have to walk around the outside of the stadium. The balls are sprayed each time it goes off. Accreditation up here in Scotland is also different to England. Currently the Scottish FA have allowed six togs and two club togs, the six can be from any of the agencies and newspapers. A pre match health questionnaire is given and also on the night is the temp checks and likewise for wearing face coverings. (Its even worse for us who wear specs) It is really surreal without the fans behind cheering but in the main the players are just getting on with the job. The match I covered last night (Wednesday 11th November 2020) St Mirren v Greenock Morton Championship Cup rounds, the fans outside fired off fireworks and Sky Sport were commenting from behind me saying it was akin to matches in Istanbul! Its a right pain is night time sports photography, helps when there is good flood lighting. Hope you get to more matches in the following weeks and months. Paul Paterson Photography

I have tried wrapping a couple of tissues along the top seam of the mask which makes the ‘steaming’ issue a bit less. Hey Mark. I finally captured the nerve to watch this video as I have been a little bummed out about the residuals of this pandemic. Again, I really appreciated your insights. I would consider myself a serious amateur sports shooter but recently I have been hired on to be part of a Pro-Am (D3) photographic team. Problem, the league is still under suspension due to government protocols here in Canada. I shoot with a 1Dx and 7D2 while trying to sort out longer reaching glass. Instead of a 70-200 I have a 200 prime and a 135 prime as I also shoot basketball. I have the opportunity to purchase a 70-200 (Version 1) but wonder if I am better off sticking with my primes and my 1.4 extender. I noticed that you attached a 2x extender to get some shots of the Manager. I would like to know your settings with the extender as I'm sure it sent your F-stop and subsequently ISO setting, through the ceiling. Do you have any suggestions for longer glass as I will be shooting a lot of matches in daylight. What are your thoughts on third-party lenses? Also - Photo Mechanic seems to be the 'go to' software for the sports industry. I have recently switched from Lightroom to ACDsee Professional as I'm not a fan of subscriptions. Can you foresee this posing a difficulty? Thanks and I hope you can get back to sports shooting sooner than later.

No need for the 70-200 plus it has the 1.4x built in if you need to stretch to the other goalmouth for corners/penalties. Alternatively the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 sport works great for tight grounds with poor lighting. Very little difference between it and the Canon in terms of speed especially when the AF is customised.

After three seasons I approached a bigger agency and was fortunate enough to get hired on a day rate basis. It is very difficult to gain accreditation into the football stadiums without being a member of an agency. Some clubs do have their own photographer but the majority of clubs use the bigger agencies. Hello sir, you think i could shoot under floodlights with a 300mm at f5.6, and around 1/500s at auto iso with okay results? Its the only one i have

    Hi there. I think you would need to switch to manual iso with a Max of 6400. F5.6 will struggle unfortunately I would say but worth a try👍🏻

    I notice you use the lens hood on your 70-200 but not the 400. How come not the 400? See a lot of sports photographers not using hoods on super-teles

  • @MarkKerton

    @MarkKerton

    I’ve always left the 400 hood off for night games to allow more light in. Although not really sure if it achieves better results and wether I’m making a mistake? Never experienced any flare from flood lights etc. Sorry I can’t give you a more in depth answer. Thanks for watching👍🏻

    @@MarkKerton I often see photographers at places like Wimbledon with no hoods on super teles and was interested. I suppose there the togs are more squeezed in, but also there's a lot less light. It just freaks me out a bit thinking of leaving the hood off my 300 f/2.8 as I keep thinking I'm going to knacker my front element 😂 Ever thought about doing some "jobs a good 'un" merch? I'll take a t-shirt 😀

    I have the same 'heavyweight' and I always use the hood unless we are too many photographers next to each other and out of courtesy we remove the hoods ( pre-Covid of course). I would not rest the lens face down on the ground like Mark does, big risk getting the front element scratched.

    If theres groups of togs they can get in the way of someone elses field of view if you're all shooting the same direction. A lot of the guys remove them to shorten the lens length.

    I don’t usually use a hood for night games. Perhaps I’m going against the rules not sure? Just thinking of the low light conditions really. Not clever to rest the lens glass down like commented on, my bad!

    Hi Greg. Yes, thats right, as quick as we can. Luckily, as you will see in my other football videos from back in March, for the bigger games, mainly Premier League, I usually send straight off the back of the camera to an editor at the office. Basically I speak into the mic on the camera, tell the editor what is going on and hit send. Means a goal or a red card etc can be online in seconds. Hope that helps Greg. Thanks for watching.
