Great Interview .. Interesting to see the U.S. sports photog issues are not that different to ours in Australia. Poorly lit stadiums are a constant challenge and no strobes allowed ! Great Vid

This is a great vid to show just how good older cameras and lenses are. You can buy used Canon Mark IVs for less than $1,000 and used 300 2.8s without IS for $1400. Not chump change but they still work as great as they did when this guy was using them. Older equipment is where it's at if you're on a budget.

you can get an old 300 2.8 without IS for around $1400 now and the Mark IV he uses is less than $1K. Older equipment now but still works as well as it did when this vid was made.

Wow, he must not sleep! He must be the definition of multitasking.

Those lens look like canons. Amazing that you can get sharp images with 3200 ISO

It is probably the only area in where the equipment is the most important.

im surprised he didn't mention safety cables when using remotes high up

More detail needed for the settings if you want to reach a wider audience.

***** If you worked for any publication remotely important you would know that 90% of the shots used and paid for are off the field, coaches, fans, player before and after game, faces, emotions. I know you're an amateur, but I will give you a tip, if you have IS and theres a moment that you want to capture even though its dark, you can still get that moment 100% usuable at 1/15 lol, but yeh IS "doesn't help" ok buddy sure. lmao

Not unusual for some sports photogs to tape the IS switch in the off position. But I bought IS lenses for the reason you stated. 2.8 is more versatile.

@@ianbunch9721 Sports photographers are taking shots of moving subjects. IS only helps with camera moving/shaking. It does nothing to help capture/freeze fast moving subjects. They are trying to get shutter speeds of 800, 1000, 1600, etc. and the only way to get that with a decent ISO in that low light setting is with a wider aperture like the 2.8. Go watch the behind the scenes video about Sports Illustrated photographers. 2.8's on basically every lens that it's available.

Not a Nikon camera in sight! That's great!

Very much. You want a wide aperture, and a body that'll shoot a high FPS. That = expensive.

they put tape on the focusring, because vibrations may cause it to turn just a little bit, which throws off the focus

How do you manage the huge bulk of photos? It sounds like you would have well over 2,000 pictures from any given game day. Who has to (gets to) look thru them all to find the very few you actually use? Is there some one who maintains and creates a data base with who, what where and when on every photo? .... It scares me to even think about it. OR do you have someone who is brutal and deletes the number to a manageable viewable number like 25...

+Tom Chesney I have a recent website and I am working on developing my portfolio by choosing what I think are my best 9 to 20 photos of each sport but I keep the galleries I create by date so people can go in, search and see their own pictures. Sometimes it may include a 10 frame sequence. If there are a lot of similar photos of an individual I delete them. www.SportsPlus.Smugmug.com (a work in progress).

+Tom Chesney Love to be able to get photos of pro players but without the credentials for a press pass you're limited to a 6" lens in major stadiums. My 70-200 is 8"....
