As a designer in the games industry, we use this as the number one ‘lens’ when looking at our work. What experience are we trying to make? What should the player feel? Folk lose sight of that when creating often, they establish a paradigm by which they succeed and then they just repeat it over and over without thinking on the goals, and eventually the world moves on.

So true. There are rare exceptions where you get good tactical analysis or insider insight on TV, but you notice it because it's the exception. By and large broadcast and cable sports media has become a race to the bottom, and for the good stuff you need to seek out independent producers.

KZread just allows so much more information and conversation about the sports topics that people actually care about. ESPN stops caring about the NFL draft about halfway into round 3 while I’m watching guys break down the film for tight ends drafted in the fifth round that could be a hidden gem. Meanwhile ESPN will be having the same Lebron vs Jordan debate day in and day out and making a mountain of one player’s tweet to leverage a new contract the night before. Ironically, it’s the small guys that I go to that don’t resort to the clickbait headlines

Its all centralized, including what information gets released. They craft narratives just like any mainstream news outlet and they use Shefter to do it. Dont care much about it. Now seeing players go on indy content channels where you get to know the players is worth far more to me. For instance, Aaron Nagler of Cheeseheadtv has had many Packers current and former players on his channel. Tom Grossi (who Brett mentioned and showed multiple screenshots of in this video) has had sit down interviews with the Packers team president Mark Murphy and many others. Absolutely love it. You don't have to do that anymore, simply because the content is on demand, you can find specifically what you're looking for. I hope all of you guys experience success, but my biggest worry is that these monoliths don't understand what made their content deal-breaking in the first place, and will just ruin every creator they sign.

The other part of your brand that I've always appreciated is the focus on education, not just film breakdown. Those other breakdown channels you mentioned are great, and you can learn a lot watching them. But none of them are likely to do full episodes on the Tampa 2 or outside zone....and those are 2 of the best videos in terms of quality you've ever done.

That line about you keeping people's attention by making quality content? That hits. I don't even watch football anymore, yet I still watch your content because it always shows what's under the hood of the football machine. That's what makes it interesting to me. It’s really simple. ESPN has sucked for a decade. They’ve been very open about the fact that they(much like other mainstream media networks Fox/CNN for example) base their entire programming on creating controversy. They also have obvious agendas. I know that every time I turn on ESPN, someone will be yelling at me about Lebron or the Cowboys. It’s boring and annoying at the same time. It’s hard for me to feel super bad for most of these folks. They got the incredible opportunity to make great money to do a dream job. They didn’t do it well enough. Most folks never get the opportunity.

Brett I gotta say a few things, first off, you're my favorite sports media person. Your strategy breakdowns and the way you speak to us the viewer, it's honestly not just fantastic but also refreshing. Secondly I appreciated that you started this off by explaining your background in sports media because I always wondered how you got so good at what you do. Thirdly, as a born and raised new Englander I'd rather listen to you say good things about Mahomes or the Jets than Stephen A Smith say nice things about the Pats because the way you present the information is humble but smart while never treating the viewer as dumb. I never played football at any level but I honestly think I gain a better understanding of the concepts that make football great when I watch your videos. Alright I'm several glasses into this weirdly bromantic speech so I'll wrap it up by saying, love the work, keep it up (and also would love a breakdown as to why you do or do not think Mac Jones has a chance in the league)

Just the way you use woke in a sentence says a lot about you and your own politics. "Everyone" (that I know and watch) is equally frustrated with Andrews specific behavior. That being said, the "leave politics out of sports" is stupidity personified. Yes, politics shouldn't be a part of game day coverage, but it is the responsibility of those in the media surrounding sports to be aware and speak up of what goes on inside, outside, and around the business. Sexual scandals, drugs, abuse, exploitation, raising awareness, etc. It is all free game.
