In the 70's I had a high school coach that had played with Spencer Haywood. The story goes that they used to put a silver dollar on the top of the backboard and Spencer would jump up and get it. The guy was a phenomenal athlete.

valona mart hey small world! I have that vertical program. It is very good. i screwed up my hamstring a bit ago though so i cant do it for a while. i got an inch after the first weak. (trained muscles you didnt know you have) and someday i will dunk. cool to see someone else who has it.

What they didn't measure is the effects of adrenalin that may add to that vertical even further.

Shaqs accomplishment is more worthy of a Max Vert Reach because he did this with a ball in his hand and did it during a game with more pressure and was probably sweating. It took him more work to get that Vet than Dwight Howards. So Shaq is still the real Superman.

+Dj Sarandos He was able to dunk on a 12 foot hoop during scrimmages. In 1956, Kansas coach Phog Allen made the team practice on a 12 foot hoop because he was advocating for a hoop height change. Wilt was able to dunk on that hoop. Dwight accomplished this same feat in a dunk contest, but Wilt did it during practice against defenders. Some of his teammates from Philly reported him touching the top of the backboard. He was a track athlete at Kansas as well competing in the high jump. Given that he had a 7'8" wingspan and was 2 inches taller than Dwight, it easy to believe he could have touched the top.

+dpillay009 Technically speaking Wilt has about 4 inches on Dwight bc players now are measured in shoes and Dwight added an inch to his height when he really is 6'10 while Wilt without shoes is 7'1 put shoes on him and he's hot 4 maybe 5 inches on Dwight as well as just as much athletic ability.

Either David Thompson lied about touching the top of the backboard, or the backboard's were shorter back then. Thompson was an great athlete, but only about 6'4. If guy like D12, Javale Mcgee, and James White can't do it, then there is no way Thompson could've done it.

My only issue with this is they don't factor in adrenaline, he only did it twice, and it's not much of an accomplishment at a relative level. Just look at Shaq and Howard's bodies, Howard can definitely go well above that, but they didn't test enough and didn't factor in adrenaline.

Wilt Chamberlain beats Shaq and Dwight howard. 7'1 bare foot, 280 lbs in his prime who had over a 40 inch vertical and could literally touch the top of the backboard. He also had one of the biggest wingspan measuring as low as 7'8'' and as high as up to 8'0''. He was as fast as a guard and even faster than some. The strongest NBA player ever as well. Very impressive though of Shaq at 7'0 barefoot with 320 lbs who jumped that high as as Dwight howard who is 6'9 bare foot with a long wingspan and that leaping ability.

David Thompson - and the GOAT - both jumped and took a quarter off of the top of the backboard. These other guys can jump - but these other 2 were the greatest of all time - for jumping/vertical.

Holy fucking shit. Putting his stats into a horse power calculator yielded 3.69 horse power. Anything approaching 3 is considered elite and this guy is close to 4. That's inhuman

actually, shaq was a beast defensively too. throughout his prime, he was one of the leagues best shot blockers and when you consider the shots he didn't block but altered- he was a monster.

he uses his other hand to left him up and it doesnt seem like much but it helps so much

Yao's wingspan is 7'5" which is short for his height. Shaq and wilt were Much shorter and had longer arms. Plus Yao has a ridiculously big head which is adds useless height in terms of veritcal touch

The guy was a high jump champion in high school, guys have been capable of jumping more than half of their height before, and Wilt was one of them. The only reason wilt took so many jumpers and finger rolls was he was sick of people just calling him an athletic freak and nothing else

According to my calculations, he would only be able to jump 24.5 inches higher on the moon if he were wearing the same EVA suit the astronauts were wearing during the Apollo missions and he applied the exact same force for the exact same amount of time. Total vertical on the moon : 64 inches.
