Mam, you have missed a simple logic in the matter of explaining the difference between SAY and TELL. I give you clear explanation regarding those two. ' Say ' is an intransitive verb and it doesn't require any object so after 'say' preposition ' to ' is used e.g: My father says to me , ' You are honest' 'Tell' is a transitive verb it immediately requires an object .For example : My father tells me that I am honest.
