Spoked but tubeless (if you have the money) and if going off roading. In most cases stick with alloys for long travels. Nice video, gave me a clear perspective.

Alloys any day! Spoke wheels may be good for someone who is a hardcore user and abuser of the bike. For regular average indian adventure touring, alloys are good and safe choice. OEMs test the alloys in all sort of conditions before passing it on to the market. Yes , alloys break but so do spokes. It's a choice you make according to your usage and priority to the buying factor of spokes vs alloys

Hi, very good informational video on pros and cons for alloy versus spoke wheels. I have the 390 adventure here in Australia. That was one bone of contention for me, whether I should eventually invest in spoke wheels, but here in Australia they are extremely expensive! Now after watching your video, I know the answer is stick with the alloys and ride with a little more care in the rough rocky terrain. Thanks again for the information.

Spoke wheel will be softer and offer a more comfortable ride due to the ability to flex. Something that Adventure 390 could benefit from with it's washboard rear suspension. Not sure how GS310 suspension is. Nice and informative videos btw

I feel such technical videos are not in great demand as we have less of hardcore riders and more of KZread bloggers. No offence to anyone but if one loves to ride, he or she must know about the smallest part like the spoke as that carries our life, once on wheels. In reality I am chasing nothing but just sharing my experience which should not be lost. I feel happy that I have another passionate rider like you who might have gained something from this video.

@@WingstoWheels one must know their machines down to the tiny bolts, I appreciate these videos, I actually did learn something here. I was ignorant to the usefulness of alloy wheels compared to spoked. This video helped me decide to get a 310GS

The video contains good info about the two types of rims but to have a real opinion about, it is necesary to test the same bike with the 2 types of wheels, the mini GS on cast are good till you turn to spoked and discover that are far better!! And now a days is very simple to turn spoked tubeless.

Hi Sir, As always this is a very informative and coherent video. I have a question on my mind for some time. Currently I own a Himalayan BS4 , which I use for daily commuting and occasional long touring. I usually travel to Hill stations twice a year and once every two years to extreme terrain such as laddakh and spiti valley. on long tours I always travel with a pillion. Because of the low touring speeds with Himalayan on plain terrain I was thinking of replacing it with a KTM Adv as the maximum distances are on plain terrain. Can you please suggest if this will be right to do based on my travel patterns. Thank You in advance!

So extreme rides, ones in two years where also offroading is just 10% of the total travel. Looking at that, you can change. The pillion has to sacrifice a bit on comfort as Himalayan seat is low and better.

I Love to Have Spoke wheel with strength of Tubeless Tyre

The high end adventure bikes come with spoke wheels and tubeless tyres, no compromise on quality, the cheapest now is Vstrom 650, which is like 10l on road, for everything else, is either spoke with tubes or alloys with tubeless, I don't like third party conversion of spoke wheels to tubeless.

Hi! I've a Triumph Speed Twin 2019, a motorcycle to use on "road" (not off). I love this bike but sometimes, in my country, I need travel on bad roads/poor condition. Bumpy roads, 5cm holes, ... I'm worried about my rims and tires. I don't want it to break. My Speed on this roads is 60-80km/h and I stand up from my seat. Do you think that on this type of road works fine my aluminum rims with my tires (pirelli diablo rosso II) or I should change my aluminium rims by spokes and my pirelli diablo rosso by for example a "mix" tires as pirelli scorpion rally str? I'm thinking in buy another rear/front shocks but I don't know about if change my rims and my tires :/. Could you help me? Thank you!

An alloy wheel rim gets bent or damaged only when you hit a sharp edged pothole or any such hard obstacle. Let's say your front wheel hits a rock where first impact is taken by tyre (that's why even correct tyre pressure has a role to play), secondly front suspension will get fully compressed if it's a sharp edge and then only impact will be transferred to alloy rims. Speed of 60 to 80 kmph is not high, till the time you take care of sharp edged hard obstacles or potholes. However next time, you may shift onto a bit harder compound tyre. Even if you fix spoke wheels, on tricky broken roads, you have to reduce speed, considering your own safety. So in my opinion alloy wheels have many advantages, only thing you need to avoid hitting them hard.

Hi....am moving from sports bike after 8yrs of usage and now stepping into offroading.. is it possible to convert the tube tyre of the Himalayan into tubless , with keeping the spokes like the onces on the bigger adv bikes ....as sudden puncture in exploring unknown woods is timing consuming and spoils the fun ...any suggestions like a complete wheel type change , different tube or any sealants..any suggestions or input from you end please

Changing over to something very reliable for remote travel can be quite expensive as such setup and wheels cost a lot. Yes, a lot of people keep doing lot of things but are they reliable is a question by itself. So in my opinion just enjoy the stock setup. We have done many long distances in Let & Ladhak region and generally things were ok. Best wishes.

My bad luck of meeting a puncture is more compared to wheel rims bending or breaking.

Hello Sir, I test drove ktm Adventure 390 and bmw g310 GS today . I have ridden RE himalayan already. The power with KTM was evident and BMW just felt like any other motorcycle (apart from the looks ) . I dont have a good experience with RE because of the product and service quality and dont have any feedback regarding KTM . I want to keep the bike for a long time , and want a bike that can sustain the stand of time. I have a moderate riding experience. I live in Chandiagarh , will be riding the bike mostly in the hills and some long distance over the weekends. What would you suggest ? RE Himalayan or Adventure 390

Ktm as more advanced and equipped with many rider's safety systems. For hills, it is very precise on turns apart from excellent grip. Please do change tyres to Metzeler Tourance and don't use MRF if wish to touch performance limits.

Hello sir, I have a question. I just bought an xpulse 4v. Bike is amazing, but it will be used just for occasional offroading and regular city use purpose. So is it possible to use KTM alloys instead of generic alloys in xpulse so that I can get the benefit of tubeless tyres? Btw, it is a really good video, creating a crystal clear playground for both alloy and spoke wheels with all their pros and cons.

No the size will not match, plus shifting on alloy will not give you any special advantage when riding on Indian roads. You may try getting the wheels modified to tubeless in a city like Delhi but how reliable will be that, is again a big question. In my opinion just enjoy the good quality tyres, as while on road they have no issues.

Sir I am 30yrs old and weight 110kg , 5'9" Height. Basically I ride approx 40km daily to office. I want a bike for touring about 200km in weekend and 3-4 time long tour in a year including 20% of hill roads and a bit offroad. And my wife will be with me. Till 2021 I was a fan of Himalayan but now I am not happy with it's performance improvement, same old looks, bulky body and a bit low power and tube tyres. Recently I am liking the KTM 250 adventure and dominar 400. So now I am confused a bit! Planning to buy a bike in the end of this year, so what would be a better choice for me.? Btw, I'll never drive at three digit speed.

If riding double means more load. If not touching 3 digit speed, means you are looking for comfort. So if that is the requirement I feel Himalayan (long stroke and good torque at lower speed) should be your first choice. If that is out go for a bigger engine like KTM390 or G310GS as the second choice.

When climbing any mountain with narrow roads, your speed will drop unless racing or in an offroading event. The spoke wheels of KTM are strong enough to go on any challenging trails, Ladhak or Spiti is not a real challenge anymore. Look at some other videos on this channel itself to see what ktm or alloy wheels are capable of. On the other hand spoke wheels can perform better if wish to go a bit faster. So if you can spend money, can shift to spoke wheels but not for Spiti or Ladhak.
