SPN - Sam gets ripped apart by Bobby

Ойын-сауық

Demon!Bobby is one hell of a scary son of a bitch!
Poor Sammy... but then again, there is SOME truth in what Demon!Bobby says. Still, those puppy dog eyes? They kill me. I swear to god... Sam Winchester could even eat my dog alive - if he apologized with THAT expression? I'd probably forgive him.

This scene is actually a lot more upsetting. When John died, Bobby basically adopted Sam and Dean as his own sons. So when Bobby says I want you to loose my number, Sam is loosing his father all over again.

Don't get me wrong, you have a point here - older siblings get hosed. But.... Everybody forgets that Dean broke the first seal. The one that started it all. Sure, he was being tortured in hell - that's excusable. He lasted something like 20-30 years of torture before he started taking the knife to other people, totally excusable, even admirable that he lasted that long. But in the beginning, he made a demon deal to save Sam that resulted in his stint in hell, which led ultimately to the destruction of the first seal. He made a deal with a demon to do something he thought was right. Sam made a deal with a demon (Ruby) to do something he thought was right. It's the same sin, same ultimate consequences. Sam had the benefit of Dean and Bobby telling him not to do it, but they are also completely unaware that Sam, in the end, tried to open contact with Dean, and someone manipulated his voicemail. Dean on the other hand, never consulted Bobby on the demon deal at all. It's easy to forget all this. I'm not sure if Bobby really meant this moment as it was, or if he was gambling a bit to shape Sam up. Ultimately he never gives up on the boys, but a shot like that sober'd sam up hard, and he probably didn't know about the phone call, but he see's how much Sam cares. Some of it at this point didn't add up - Sam did try to open a voicemail from Dean and it was intercepted, presumably by demon's, and faked... and bobby doesn't know this, but he might suspect something is up. He's acting on what he's got... but he crumbles pretty easy on this notion later. **edit** I'd forgotten this is when Bobby is possessed by a demon, but... Demon's tap their hosts, he might've used a lot of Bobby's real feelings, so it all still stands. He might've cut deeper, but it was Bobby's thoughts doing the cutting.

  • @forcryinoutloud

@@BigMac8000 What you're forgetting though is that Dean's deal was for HIS soul to save Sam. That Dean always chooses to sacrifice HIMSELF. Does he make bad choices that result in bad things happening? Of course, that's only human - but when Dean does it, it is ALWAYS himself that he's putting right there in the cross hairs. Sam chooses people OVER Dean, he chooses Ruby - a DEMON, over DEAN, his brother. He has the benefit of both Bobby and Dean, both older, bother more experienced hunters, as well as Castiel, telling him that what he is doing is WRONG, but he does it anyway. Dean will always make the sacrifice play - himself for the ones he loves, whereas Sam is always going to be the one making the stupid choice that risks the people he supposedly loves. That's the difference between them - and that's why, despite this being demon!Bobby, Sam absolutely needed to hear that he fucked up ROYALLY.

Nicole Salmon it really isn’t true. In the series, Sam gets blamed for absolutely everything. He’s the only one people blame, and it’s like everyone forget Dean broke the first seal except when it’s convenient and it gives Dean some emotional moments that make people feel bad FOR him. Thats the difference between the two characters. Every time that Dean fucks up it’s either completely ignored (when he physically beats up Sam at multiple times, bc yes that is an abusive behavior but for some reasons the writers consider it ok) or twisted to make him look like the poor victim. Every. Damn. Time. Also, he’s forgotten super easily. Whereas Sam gets the screaming, the beating, the blaming from everyone around him, even when it wasn’t his fault. I really don’t know why the writers did this, but clearly they have a favorite character and they just chose to overlook all his flaws and all the fucked up things that he does, which imo is really sad. He would have been way more interesting if he was called out on his bullshit.

But now everyone acts so self righteous as if they wouldn’t have done it. Sam may have done it the wrong way, but he did what the others also wanted to do. So why are they blaming him THAT he did it and not HOW he did it. It is unfair. (Also, side note, Dean trusted Ruby at one point as well) It was a team effort. Dean is equally at fault as Sam and even Cas played his part. They were all being manipulated by different people. So why is it only Sam‘s fault exactly?

This is one scene I always try to avoid rewatching because although I knew from the start that something was up with Bobby, like demon possession, it breaks my heart! Sam's face, when he first tells him it's because he feels so bad and thinks of Bobby as a father so he feels bad not telling him. So he tells him and gets this in response, and he thinks it's actually Bobby and he is so clouded by sadness and guilt and all bad feelings he doesn't stop to think that it's not actually Bobby because he thinks he deserves it. Which he didn't! If you want to lay the guilt on Sam, think about the fact that Dean broke the first seal for selfish reasons and Cas is the one who let Sam out of the Panic Room in the first place. Demons AND Angels were manipulating them all, and although I think Dean breaking the first seal was technically selfish, the reason he was in Hell was so Sam could live, but he wasn't forced into the torturing other souls and he wasn't manipulated by someone he thought he could trust. So I hate when people throw all the blame at Sam, because he was actually least at fault (other than Bobby because Bobby actually did nothing to add to the whole Apocalypse starting... He was probably the only one who was smart enough to not haha) Edit: Just in case anyone thinks that by saying Dean's decision to torture others in Hell wasn't understandable, that's not what I mean at all. It was purely driven from him wanting to escape being tortured himself and that is completely understandable. We'd all do the same, we most likely wouldn't last anywhere near as long as he did. But in the end, he chose to torture other souls to relieve himself of the pain. He did horrible things for selfish reasons in Hell, and like I said, it's understandable, but that doesn't change the facts. Plus, he was in Hell so Sam could live (I've always found Demon Deals like that a mix of selfless and selfish. You don't wanna live without this person, so you make them live without you instead and go to Hell to do so.) With Sam and the Demon Blood, that is so much more complicated to me. In a way, it was selfless to an extreme. He was willing to destroy himself in order to destroy Lilith. But he was also very suicidal at the time, and it was a suicide run, which kinda makes his motives selfish. Then, when Dean gets back it's already formed into an addiction, but he hasn't really realised that, but in a way it has become a selfish motive because he feels he needs the blood and this is how he gets it, but then also he saw how Hell effected Dean and changed him and he didn't want him to have that pressure of killing Lilith on him as well. So that was both selfish and selfless. Point is, they were both manipulated by everyone around them. But, in a way, even the people manipulating them were being manipulated. It was all a huge mess, but it also really worked and made sense. My original point of this comment though, was that Sam shoulders all the blame for the Apocalypse. No one blames Dean because he only broke the first Seal in order to stop his own torture, unknowingly. But everyone blames Sam because he broke the last Seal by killing the demon they all wanted dead but with his powers none of them liked. I mean, here's a thought, Bobby literally suggested to Dean that they let Sam kill Lilith because he recognised what they were doing to him. Sam destroyed himself in order to kill Lilith because he believed it was the right thing, because that's what they all thought. But instead of any praise or relief for Lilith being dead, he gets a load of blame Lucifer, when that was far from his fault. :(

Daisy Fae actually the Angels could have dragged Dean out sooner but they wanted him to break the first seal. And Dean didn't have anyone trying to stop him from doing his part. Sam did. Dean tried to stop him. But he was so gung ho on revenge and high on demon blood that he had to do things his own way. So yeah Sammy gotta hold the L on this one. In season 4 Chuck told him what he was doing, sucking demon blood was wrong but he just kept doing it. He wasn't being tortured everyday for 30 years like Dean was. Was he, did I miss that part?

Dean did try to stop him drinking demon blood, but no one told him NOT to kill Lilith until right before he was about to kill her. The way Dean tried to stop Sam drinking demon blood was actually pretty textbook to driving away someone with a drug addiction . A hard drug addiction takes sensitivity to deal with, something Dean wasn't emotionally-equipped to give Sam after his experience in Hell (Dean of Season Two probably would've been able to handle it much better, and might've actually helped Sam to stop much earlier). Depending on the drug, quitting cold turkey can actually kill someone, because it shocks the body. If Sam were taken to a hospital, they would have weaned him off the drug slowly, diluting the doses each time, and sent him to talk therapy to discover the emotional root of the addiction and heal it so he never feels the need to use the drug again. In this case, the emotional root of the addiction was Sam feeling helpless/powerless -- both in the face of Dean's death, and in the face of how much of his life had been puppeted by demons. He turned to Ruby and the demon blood in order to try to take some control back, and reclaim the autonomy that demonic manipulation stole from him... which of course was in itself a demonic manipulation, and ended up with him losing more control of both himself and his situation. When Sam tells Dean he needs Ruby, he means he needs the feeling of autonomy Ruby's blood grants him. Dean locking Sam up, "bossing [Sam] around" (as Sam puts it), and giving Sam ultimatums is the exact brand of controlling restriction of his choices that Sam's trying to overcome by drinking the demon blood in the first place. It only exacerbates the problem. Sam asks Dean to trust him to take the wheel this time; he needed to hear "hey, I do trust you to run your own life. You have power on your own, you don't need the demon blood." What he gets from Dean is "No, I don't trust you. You can't make decisions for yourself. You're a monster." (Dean's controlling of Sam is, of course, a by-product of his own feeling of powerlessness post-Hell). Ironically, it's Ruby who tells Sam he never needed the demon blood to activate his power -- and of course after hearing that, Sam's addiction no longer has its overwhelming pull on him. Both Sam and Dean needed a rock, and neither brother was in an emotional position to be able to give that kind of support to the other, and so neither was able to get the support they needed from the other. Both of them were a mess, and they both had a hand in the fracturing of the relationship. They were all manipulated twelve ways to Sunday.

wallabywayful Sam knew drinking demon blood was wrong. That's the choice he made. They kill demons for Chucks sake. Dean was always an emotional wreck. I'm surprised they turned out to not be worse because of their upbringing. No I don't blame Dean for Sam's demon blood addiction. Dean is responsible for the choices he makes in his life at what point is Sammy held accountable for his choices. My take is that the one constant presence Sam has had in his life was Dean so he knows his brothers attitude better than anyone else. Dean is always a hard talking son of a gun (no chick flick moment). Not everyone goes around doing foolishness because they feels bossed around by their older sibling. He made a stupid decision to feel stronger and needed and didn't care about the consequences. He tried to justify that in the diner. "Oh Dean with this method I save the host more times than we've ever been able to before". They hunt the supernatural everything has a consequences. Sam knew this. I don't blame Dean one bit

  • @wallabywayful

    @wallabywayful

Oh hon, I'm not blaming Dean for Sam drinking demon blood. Sam made a conscious decision to self-destruct and bring Lilith down with him (I think he tells Dean this outright when they discuss how his relationship with Ruby started, but it's been so long since I saw that episode that I don't remember). It was a suicide run -- since he couldn't get Dean out of hell, he devoted himself to taking down what he saw as Dean's murderer. Dean was brought back from Hell too late for Sam to realize it had turned into an addiction that fed a psychological need. That's all on Sam. I'm just saying that by the end of the season, even with all the heavy manipulation that angels and demons were working on both boys, there is clearly still a way for Dean to reach Sam, and vice versa, and yet neither of the boys take it. If Sam had recognized what was going on and told Dean that he was struggling with an addiction, I'd like to think Dean might've been more understanding and might've actually found some strength in helping Sam out. (Sam didn't tell him, of course, because he was too far into it to realize what it was.) Likewise, if Dean had treated Sam's addiction like an addiction, and acted accordingly, Sam might've listened to Dean. Instead, the words he said and the way he acted were instrumental in driving Sam away in that last scene between them. That's what makes the storytelling so good: you can see the path both of them could've taken to prevent all this, and have to watch them fall apart instead because of essential character flaws in both. If there WASN'T a way for the boys to reconcile, then the fallout wouldn't be nearly as painful. Both of them are responsible for the breaking in their relationship, just as both of them are responsible for the Apocalypse (Dean breaking the first seal and Sam breaking the last). Again, that's why it's good writing. Also, just an aside -- Sam needing control was about so much more than Dean bossing him around, girl. (Although pre-Hell Dean was a lot less controlling, so your argument that Sam knows that's how his brother works doesn't fit here. The whole point of season four is that both boys don't recognize the person the other's become since they've been apart, and both boys are shaken by that. Sam didn't recognize the Dean that came back from Hell -- that was part of why he didn't ask him for help in the first place, and why he thought Dean wouldn't be able to kill Lilith, because Dean was so messed up from what he'd gone through. Go back and rewatch those early seasons; Hell changed his character a LOT.) Anyway. Sam's entire life was orchestrated and manipulated by demons; his mother was killed, his father died, his brother in hell, his chosen future destroyed, his fiance murdered, all in an attempt to control him. Even his body (the demon blood in his veins force-fed to him as a baby) and his mind (the psychic visions he can't control) are altered and manipulated by demons, in order to get him to open Lucifer's cage and be Lucifer's vessel. That's why he felt powerless. Dean being "bossy" was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Sam had other people limiting and controlling his choices for years. He's not foolish -- he's cornered. On a writing level, as a character, Sam needed a power boost in order to have any agency in the plot, instead of being dragged around by the baddies and forced to react, as he was stuck doing in S1-3. And as a character constantly foreshadowed as being capable of darkness, the writers needed to make sure whatever power he was able to get would fulfill that corrupting foreshadowing. He's written intentionally to be a Tragic Hero, a foil to Dean's Classical Hero. That's why the original ending for the series (season five) ends with Sam committing self-sacrifice and being stuck in the Cage for eternity (Tragic fated ending), and Dean getting the girl and the normal life (Classical happily ever after).

I know people are talking about the blame game here. But if anything what really irritates me most is the fact Dean (and I love Dean) could not live wothout Sam. Which Sam is like to, but Dean died, horrifically infront of Sam. Went to Hell and Sam could do nothing to save him, before or after he went. Everyrhing Sam tried didn't work. So yeah Dean lost Sam, but Sam also lost Dean, had to bury him, live a year trying and failing to save him. (Which really fd Sam up) Which brought Sam to the self destuctive point which Ruby fully took advantage of. And after all that and after Sam sees the error of his ways and trys to make right, Dean just continues to through it in his face. Even when the tables are turned and Sam does anything to save Dean (like Dean always does for Sam) he throughs it in his face. My point is, I always see this series as the road which lead Sam to the trials, becuase this series it just feels like whatever he does is not good enough and Dean does not even recognise this until Sam is completing the third trial.

I think this was the first sign that Bobby was possessed and I just chalked it up to weird writing. When I got to this scene recently, aside from finding it sad, I was confused. It didn't seem like the kind of reaction I would expect from Bobby. In a way it's reasonable because of the situation, which is why it's not too weird that the guys accept it, but at the same time you would think Bobby wouldn't just give up on Sam and rip into him that way. It's like when Dean knew Azazel was possessing John because of how he was acting.

My thoughts are that Sam believed he deserved it, so he isn't gonna question it. As far as he knows, Bobby was all for leaving him locked in the Panic Room to stop him from drinking demon blood, and not willing to give him more and let him kill Lilith, which is what he actually suggested to Dean. And Dean, he's too pissed at Sam right now to really think about the fact that Bobby would never say this, because he agrees with what the Demon was saying to some extent at this point in time... It's sad, but their emotions were getting in the way of judgement at this point in time, because they both agreed with the Demon to some extent...

He calms down, and sees things from a slightly wider perspective eventually, but it’s not really until the end of the season that he actually fully makes peace with Sam. And it takes Sam risking the world on his faith in Dean, for Dean to have faith in Sam again.
