Many farms around me in w ny have black locust someplace on the farm. They grow fast they spread like wild fire. They were used for fence post.

I love black locust for burning. Got about 4 cords a couple of years ago. Nice thing is that it grows to a nice size for firewood very quickly, although treated as invasive in some cases. I was down in Yankton at the Lewis and Clark State park and collected about 100 black locust seeds. They product a prolific amount of seeds as they get older. They are a very hardy disease resistant tree.

Nice splitting session 👍 I don't know about honey locust but black locust of any significant size tends to twist or curl. We used to make trailer and wagon beds out of locust. You pretty much had to work it down to the dimension you wanted and then stack and sticker it green and put heavy weights on top of it to keep it flat while it dried or it would twist and cup on you. Better rot resistance than oak but harder than hell dry. High speed steel tools have a hard time with it. A lot of historical buildings have locust sill beams in our region. Good video

Goodmorning. The honey and black locust both are native in southern ill. The honey locust are thick along creeks and fence rows. Old tree books say they are great erosion control. Beautiful tree and firewood. The bad the locust borers put alot of saw dust in the pile. You can hear them chewing in my stacks of honey locust.

Nice video Chris. What you split today is premium heating wood. Odd shaped pieces that resulted from noodling twisted grain rounds don’t stack well but the wood corrals didn’t care. Happy 4th of July. GNI

The Honey Locust is genus Gleditsia and Black Locust is Genus Robinia. Two different trees with compound leaves. The wild Honey Locust has some really nasty thorns. Black Locust will grow just about anywhere and is often used when reclaiming strip mined areas.

Yup, this it the non-thorny non-seed pod honey locust. It's a pretty common yard tree choice here.

I've never split/burnt locust. Looks like good stuff ... very tight grained with smooth split and little waste like straight-grained red oak, but with more BTUs. What's not to like?

The honey locust is awesome but the black locust bark usually comes off and is pretty messy while working it into rounds.

I wish we were wearing long sleeves in Ar. 115 heat index today.

Yup, we had a stretch of 50s and 60s for a while there, it's only hit 80 a few days so far....Wisconsin summers are awesome most days ...we pay for it with -20 to -30 for weeks in the winter which lasts for 5-6 months!

My brother owns a tree service in the valley and locust is not too common. Most he encounters were planted in the mid to late 70s. They replaced a lot of the elm trees that were cut down.

We do get some ants in wood...mostly red oak in the logs. But when it is cut split and dried they leave.

My guess is cost to make and quality of the metal and just better design.

If HONEY LOCUST is heavy, sure split like 👍 butter 🧈 on the wood 🪵 splitter. If I was you I use ORANGE 🍊 or BLACK snow fence around the split firewood 🪵 look 👀 clean 🧽 and easier for tractor 🚜 to load firewood 🪵 on wooden pallets. Get some hydro ground rods make with gav Steel dip for hold up the snow fence . 😊

I have tried thousands of times to break a window on my truck but it is obviously bullet proof, like my limo is.

Very impressed with the splitter. We heat with wood here in central New Hampshire and harvest and split all our wood. Gotta ask, what's the tonnage on your splitter?

It is around 17 tons...it's actual tons not just a label like most splitters that say 30 tons but is actually more like 20. To me speed is more important. Check out EASTONMADES web site for more info!

For what? Cutting, splitting, drying, selling , finding???? If you mean heat wise as in BTUs ....honey locust is 26.7 and osage is 32.9 so no, it is not better.

Locus is a fairly scarce commodity there’s 2 trees growing on the farm thats it ,no other locus trees that I’ve ever found . I have black walnut trees growing on my property that I planted. Should be better than boxelder.

Locust doesn’t have much water in it. About 800 lbs to the cord. Like oak it doesn’t dry fast.

90% of the wood I sell is for fireplaces, small wood stoves and smokeless fire pits. Those people I sell to DO NOT heat with wood they burn for fun and the want smaller one hand size pieces. Some of the people that I sell to that burn for heat have small high efficiency wood stoves with small fireboxes and they too do not want big wood. I do have a couple people I sell to that have wood boilers and all but one have high efficiency stoves and they also want smaller pieces so they can pack more wood in tighter. This allows 24 hour burns because their stoves burn better with smaller dry wood and have controls that burn longer with extremely well run dampers way better than just a couple big logs that smolder. They get over 90% efficiency verses the old ones that are maybe 60% efficient. I am doing a custom split now for a customer that wants 20" long pieces that are just 1/2s ans 1/4s splits, it will be on soon.

Probably see Adam dad for boiler wood 🪵, he got a field full of it for sure . Chris you didn’t bring much firewood 🪵 logs this winter ❄️ for stock up 🔝 the wood 🪵 yard for dry season this summer. Half a semi load behind 22MB EASTONMADE be there the last 6 months or more . I’ll have to go back threw 1400 videos check went it was delivered on what DATE 😊. remember STICK on the ICE 🧊, SAW in the WOOD 🪵 and RUBBER on the ROAD . Donny Walker back repair an old husqvarna that first came out in my days 65cc and 77cc in 1956 to 1958 Donny look 👀 up the series # to real Date on the husqvarna chainsaw . I remember it was golden went husqvarna hit the forest 🌳, ALL the others were junk if you want my true on chainsaw were heavy and slow like 👍 molasses. The old chainsaw use them for weight in a lobsters traps might be alright in a cove . 😊

Chris you need a E- bike 🏍 with a trailer hitch to pull your Axles out into the wood 🪵 yard . Bert probably make up 🔝 something for the back of the E- bike 🏍. If I had it for a hr probably gear ⚙️ something up 🔝 for you in the shop for sure . Remember Man made it or MAN can rebuild repair and come up 🔝 with something for sure in 2024 . 😊😊

Iiiii iiiiii been THINKING 🤔 why you cut your block of firewood 🪵 in half ? Went you can roll them in the tractor 🚜 bucket and put them on single wedge and split them in half is a lot faster. A true logger throw them on the splitter with NO PROBLEM, unless there over 55 gallon barrel of diesel fuel ⛽️. I know I’m get old now but still lift my weight for my age as old time logger.

Those rounds at 25"wide x 16"long weigh between 200 and 230 pounds and with crotches and twisted grain do not split easy or well so I use my brain and my saws to do the work and rip them so the split easier.
