Split tail shad - EP Style with a split hackle tail - McFly Angler Streamer Fly Tying Tutorial

EP (Enrico Puglisi) style flies are quite popular. They have been staples in many saltwater and warm water fly Fishermans boxes for years. They look so realistic and are very versatile with color choices. However there is one issue Ive found in the past with these flies. They don't have a ton of tail movement. Also the back ends tend to just taper off, and don't form any type of tail. I fixed this issue with the addition of some hackle on the back end. And I split this hackle to give it a bit of a "tail" look. I believe this improves the style greatly and really makes this fly not only look more realistic, but also gives it some better action.
Now, I personally have not seen this done before. I did come up with the idea on my own. This does not mean that it hasn't been done in the past. With 1000's if not more tiers out there, im sure someone has thought of this idea and implemented it as good or better than I did. So if you have seen this done before, please tell me who the original tier was so I can say here. However I have been tying this now for a few months, and I still have yet to see an identical fly. So I do believe ive come up with a new pattern here. But again, I would love to hear from all of you whether this is true or not. Either way, what I have tied has worked wonders for those who I have sold them to. So give it a try and use this tutorial on how to tie it yourself. Or you can always purchase them from me as well.
As always here is a list of the materials I used on this fly.

    No uv, I'm still pretty new to this and havent invested in that yet. I add a 1/32 oz nail weight for stick worms, tied on the underside of shank and I tie on a weed guard using 50# mono around the hook and pinch a small lead weight on that to make it keel, I can cast em pretty far. I've learned alot watching you, your work is awesome!

    Gave this a try last night...new to tying, learned a lot by attempting it, watched this video multiple times and realized my attempt has lots of room for improvement...I also realized that I didn’t have the blue dubbin flash that you used along with the short pieces of Congo hair, and water silk near the head/belly of the fly...would you be so kind as to provide a link to this material? (I don’t see it in description) Wanna try to improve over my first attempt, thanks!

    I don't believe I added flash. I could be wrong though, but I don't remember adding flash other than the lateral line. Its been a while since I made this video. I forget sometimes. sorry! Hey well im glad you attempted it. This is a very advanced fly, so the fact that you even tried is great for being a beginner. If your really new into fly tying, start out with a wooly bugger, its difficult enough to improve techniques but hard to mess-up.

    Incredible video man! Probably one of your best in my opinion. Also, I had a question, so I have been tying some dubbing style streamers and have caught a few fish on them! However, I have noticed that the flies like to float. Even when the fly is soaked, it requires some weight and often start to float again after some false casts. I have been using alot of the FTD bull frawg dubbing which is technically a floating dubbing which you used in your videos. Is this from the bull frawg dubbing or is this normal with dubbing style flies? If it is the bull frawg dubbing, are there any other cheap alternatives? Thanks and have a great day!

  • @McFlyAngler

    @McFlyAngler

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank yuh! So I used bull frog for that reason, the material would float, so for instance my squishy head streamer, I used the dubbing to give a buoyancy, which combined with the epoxy head, would make it give a nice side to side action . But I almost always fished them on a sink tip line. When the fly itself has weight added it won’t do side to side, but when added up the line, like a sink tip line it would. Also the other ones I used bull frog, I also added some dumbbell eyes or lead wraps. It will float for sure if you don’t. But again so does laser dub to a degree. Also be careful on how much you are adding to your fly. Too much and it won’t ever soak up enough water to start sinking.

    Like every single pattern I've watched you tie, this looks truly excellent IN THE VISE. But it absolutely tortures me when you don't show us video footage of the fly being retrieved through the water. Moreover, when you DO show us "action footage," it's usually in a bathtub, which just doesn't provide a true picture of how the pattern behaves in open water, at the end of a fly line and fly rod. I know that "water testing" takes time, but when you skip it, I don't think you're doing justice to your exceptional skills as a fly designer and tier. Please, PLEASE consider demonstrating the performance of most-if not all-the patterns you post on your channel. Thanks for listening, Chris

    Yes, I would love to be able to do action videos of me fishing it in the water. Would be great. But I live 45 minutes away from a water source, and make a video every week. Very difficult to do so. Especially since making these videos brings in less income than the cost of gas to get to a location. There is a reason very few people do this water testing on KZread. In more recent videos I’ve used the “fly tester” thing I got. But I had to save up for it since those are pricy
