SPLIT SKI | HOW TO XV

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When splitboarding you often find yourself with a short transition pitch, where it doesn’t make sense to assemble back your splitboard into riding mode but where “split ski” is a much more efficient way to go through it.( it also very often involves a bit of comedy...)
In this episode of How To XV, I go through some of the tips I have learnt through my many split missions. Either with skins on or without skins we will go through a few pointers which will save you a ton of energy and keep you moving quickly .
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

    Tip I can provide, use the ski strap through the highback. My spark rnd bindings have slots to run a ski strap through the highback and around your shin. This is for support when edging into the hill while sidehilling on the up track, but it can provide extra control and stability while split skiing too

    I’m surprised more splitboarders don’t embrace the tele turn, and use fishscale bases. You really don’t need skins in most situations. I’m tempted to turn some fat tele fishscale boards into a “snowboard” with voile plates, using 75mm plastic boots, and a voile 3pin binding for the ascent.

    I'm a life long snowboarder who also mountaineers, and can cross country ski. I ask this in earnest. What is the advantage to boarding down big mountains? In my case it just seems like I would do it because I cannot currently ski downhill and as an active athlete I am concerned about the acl and other leg injury risks I might be exposed to during early mid life. It seems as though the ski is better fitted to the mountain in every way. Hence needing to turn my snowboard into a cross country ski.

    I always wondered how hard is split skiing on the gear (bindings especially). Seems like it is fine and no big deal? I always thought it was ok eventually, but I never would think of riding on tracks for fear of overloading the binding attachment points with too much torsion. I have actually never used skis, so that is definitely a skill I would need to learn from scratch! hahaha

  • @RafaelFaenir

    @RafaelFaenir

    2 жыл бұрын

    Usually stiffer boots are better, they give you more control and edging when skinning up (especially useful on icy conditions) and in general it's also good for control when descending. There is no need for touring-specific boots, unless you are really high level, but like Martin said here, boots with a rubber base (like Vibram) are much better for booting/hiking up, especially when it gets rocky.

  • @semiennafaa12

    @semiennafaa12

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can use normal boots without any problems, but backcountry/splitboard boots are usually more robust. This means that splitboard boots are usually stiffer and have a solid rubber sole, almost like hiking boots. Some boots even have lips on the back for semi-automatic crampons. Most boots also offer a better range of motion for touring (easier slipping). Here are some examples of splitboard boots DEELUXE SPARK XV 2022 (never used, but we are on the XV channel, so out of respect it must be listed first :))), Burton Tourist - classic, comfortable boot with small footprint, K2 Aspect - durable, very stiff, almost like hard boots, compatible with semi-automatic crampons, Nitro Incline TLS - I am currently using these - extremely comfortable and warm, but with larger footprint, best traction on icy snow, compatible with semi-automatic crampons, but not sure yet if I like the TLS lacing.

  • @HOWTOXV

    Hey. Yes - as Dan, Martin, Rafael and Semi mention- I use my "regular" boots, The Deeluxe XV Spark, which are designed for backcountry and mountaineering so are one of the stiffer models on the market, but you can tour with any boots, if you are doing it a lot you might want to move to a more specific model - and especially the Vibram sole for feeling comfortable on rocks and ridges. Xv

  • @HOWTOXV

    @HOWTOXV

    Not sure I will have much carving going on! - But the main reason to switch the "skis" is to ensure that your "buckles" are on the outside and they don't catch, that way when you are splitboarding up(or skiing down!) you don't accidentally undo your bindings. Xv
