Wow I thought split rocks were the same thing as lithops! Glad I watched both videos !

Thank you. I got it on a whim and had no idea how to care for it. It just got its second set of leaves

I always thought these were ugly and when ever I saw a video of them I would skip it. Well one day at lowes I was looking at plants and came across them. And I fell in love and got one. I couldnt stop thinking of them so I went back the next day and got two more.

I have about a dozen or so along with my lithops and "baby toes" I water when they seem dry and its not very often but I feel like its more often than u. I do have them in full day sun and so far its worked for me...environment is everything when plant care is concerned...as u well know 😊😊😘 love ur vids for yrs now.

Great video Andrea, I love these little split rocks. I have to water these about 3 times a yr because they grow outdoors and we get a lot of crazy humid climate here in Florida, which they tend to suck up from the air. If I'm not careful they can get overwatered so easily. Thanks so much for sharing your little cuties with us🐞🌸

@@SucsForYou hello! So glad I found your page. I think I watered when I shouldn’t and turned my plant to mush! I’ve had it for 1.5 years so I’m devastated (needless to say). The outer leaves felt wrinkled so I watered. And it plumped back up but I’m afraid I overwatered it. If they are pushing new leaves do you refrain from water as with lithops?

@@SucsForYou is royal flush variety the same? I have two now that are pushing new leaves. I also have some lithops that I’m trying to decide if I should water or not. Learning lots from your videos. Regular succs I have success with. Lithops is the next learning adventure

I almost watered them too much! 😳. Thank goodness you helped me on that. I do want to know when to remove the extra leaves? They both have 2 extra leaves on each side. Hi Rhonda! Thank you! So we don't remove the leaves manually -- just stop watering until the outer leaves dry out (can take months!). And you may need to pot them separately to make sure one isn't getting water when the other one doesn't need it 😉 Say hi to Andrea for me lol!!

How much water should I give my new plant.I have just repotted it in mostly Akadama and aquarian sand.

Help! I’ve had mine for about 2 months it’s being doing great. Not watering often but I did “feed” them and now it’s getting gooey at the bottoms of the outer parts. Can I save it!?

I bought mine about 2 weeks ago and repotted one week ago, using ~90% substrate and 10% cactus mix. The instructions that came with the substrate have a watering schedule for newly repotted Pleiospilos in order to get good roots established. I noticed tonight that the two older leaves are somewhat softer than they were a week ago, but I don't see any new growth in the split. I have one more day to water, per the instructions, for best root development, but I don't want to overwater, either, with the older leaves being a little more pliable - should I water, per the planting instructions or let it go without water while those older leaves dry up? So hard when you buy and don't really know the plant's history! Thank you!

If it's not splitting (showing new growth) it's safe to water 🙏 But that 90/10 ratio is high on organic soil in my opinion which means it will hold more water for longer. So just be careful either way :)

I made the mistake to water it before waiting for the leaves to dry up and now my splitting rock is suffering from rot. How do I save it?

My split rock's bottom leaves are shrinking/mushy, I know that's normal, but one of them is rotting. What should I do? The actual main plant and top leaves are fine though.

My split rock feels loose in soil. Haven't changed his pot yet.

How long does their roots grow? I have mine in a 4.9 inch pot, but it’s not very “deep”. I know lithops need a tall pot, so I wasn’t sure if these guys are the same. Thank you for your videos!!!!

Do you have the watering cues and weeks you watered over the year written down anywhere? I’m about to get my first one and want to do it right. It still confusing as to when to water. When do I water every week?

Sorry for the late reply - I gently squeeze the leaves and if they feel soft/pliant, I water. So no real 'schedule' - just paying attention to the growth cycle and how many leaf pairs are in the works :)

@@sharonpernes3487 No, Splitrocks need at least a 4" deep pot because their roots grow straight down & very long. 4" terracotta is perfect.

Can I use 90% grit mix and pumice and the rest chunky cactus soil or does it have to be organic? The only organic soil I have is this bonsai soil I never use. Should I use organic bonsai soil mixed with orchard bark?

All of that would work but I'd leave out the bark.

I have a while to go before I need to try one of these. I know my limits.

I just received a split rock from Amazon, it’s early August in Michigan. The soil is very hard. Both sets of leaves are firm. I would like to repot from the plastic pot it’s in now, to a clay pot. Please advise on if an how I should proceed.

Sure, go for it! You can either break up the soil with something like a toothpick or just transfer the whole thing to a new pot with new fast draining soil to fill it up. I wouldn't water it before or for at least a week afterwards to avoid shock/pathogens entering broken roots. If it's firm, you should have a couple of weeks at least before it would want any water.

I have a question 😗 mine is growing a new pair of leaves (I guess you could call the leaves or whatever their called lol) and I’m not sure when I should water them 😅 I know you don’t water them a lot but I haven’t watered mine in about a month cause I’m scared I might kill him 😩 I wanna water him so bad but I read up you should water them when their growing a new pair? Or something like that but I don’t wanna find out if that’s true or not without asking other people first cause I don’t wanna kill it after only having it for a month (around a month) Also, what happens to the old leaves when the new leaves are growing in? the old leaves on mine are VERY small but I don’t know if your supposed to tear them off when their done or if you just leave them alone 😕

Great video! By the way, what's the name of the the split rock's little cactus friend beside him 0:58 ? I have one just like it and I'd love to know his proper name!! Also, I'm not sure if you remember, but a short while ago I explained to you an issue I was having keeping newly de-leafed baby succulents alive. You mentioned that it's important to be sure they heal after taking the leaf off, and I kept that in mind and gave my newest baby a few days before watering for the first time, and he seems happy as a clam so far!! So just wanted to say thank you for the advice! You're super helpful!!

Hi, I am in the UK and got my first one this morning (mail order). It hs four leaves, so two "old" and two new all about the same size. now the outer leaves are feeling a bit soft to the touch. But the new leaves also are a bit soft to the touch - squidgy I call it. I thought the new leaves should feel hard to the touch? Should I water? Certainly the pot it is in is dry. Secondly, it is in a very small pot and I would like to put it in one like you have got yours. Is there a repotting season? Or can I do it now. Thank you

It could be dormant/shocked from being in the mail. I would wait a week or so before watering or repotting.

@@dif5759 Welcome! When you do water it, don't soak the pot. Just a small drink and wait a few days. The new leaves should firm up. Hopefully it will get back on it's normal schedule soon!

I rain home and they were soaked. So I took them out of their medium to try and dry them and put them back in a new medium of pebbles and rocks, like you have. I’m praying they make it !

Can these be host to flies. I found mine was really soft,I didn't water it in the winter,it had new babies coming up,but it looked like spider webs inside,I touched it with a toothpick and it was really gooey,it looked like baby flies in the gooey stuff. I threw it in the garbage. Idk if I did the right thing. Help

Moved to a terra cotta planter with a hole in the bottom. Used soil for this type of plant. I have killed one for 3 summers. After reading up on their care, I hope this one lives a long life.

It's a real shame that anyone in Texas would have to or need to even worry about the power grid there in Texas. My brother Randy lost plants he'd had for 30-40 years during that power outage. A real shame for you all!
