Most of my phish shows were between 93-95....every one I saw was killer. Saw em again in 2000....wasn't the same band. Kinda gave up on em at that point. Still enjoyed the early records and some bootlegs tho. I remember when this show happened....was debating going, but didn't for whatever reason. Didn't hear the story about this gig til a few minutes ago....started listening with "Glide", which was a trainwreck. Have never heard Trey play that badly....led me to believe he was wasted out of his mind, but I think he was just emotional (yes, I know he was in the throes of opiate addiction at this point). But he seems to have cleared his fingers for this one. Playing's great. Yeah, it's kinda ramble jamble, but that's what these guys did during this era. Seeing comments about how bad this is is puzzling to me. Playing seems fine.

I know what your saying. I was referring to being high and performing. Coventry is an example of Trey losing his professional abilities because he was so blasted. He wasn’t handling his drugs that night. Once he started getting into hard drugs in the late 90s Trey was pretty much incapacitated and I functional in his professional and personal life within 5-6 years Jerry was able to consume massive quantities of everything and still show up strong musically for most of his 30 year career. Just a certain knack he had. Those boys grew the Grateful Dead from a tradition of performing live while taking heavy drugs. I’m not glorifying any of it though and I couldn’t be happier about Treys recovery. I love that guy and it’s a beautiful thing
@novakaya

And I def wouldn’t say Jerry couldn’t handle shit. On any given night of brilliant performances from the mid 60s to the mid 90s he was on enough substances to flatten most humans into a weeping quivering fetal ball of worthlessness.

I made the long trek there and yes it was a lot of things, but what it wasn’t was not worth it. A lot has been said about this show. To be there and feel the emotion and connection that transpired that weekend told me all I ever needed to know about Phish. Connection, creativity, and gratitude define this band no matter the circumstance. An unforgettable experience. Greatest band ever, and this SOAM slaps.
Thank God he got clean. I forgot how bad he was, he's on the top of his game now.
thank god trey got arrested
Idc about the reputation of this show. They've played alot of stinkers in their careers and alot of questionable versions of songs. But this SOAM is my favorite version by far. I must have listened to it all the thru with concentration at least a dozen times now lol. Its fr got everything and the underlying darkness is perfectly suitable for a song like this one.💯🤘

The way his voice is quivering still, good god! The song is already desperate as it is, then add that in, yeesh. THEN add in his ope-ed out dark guitar madness... I've listened 5 times in the last 2 days (drive for work lots off time lol) and I agree with you man
From the crowd, this was the highlight of Coventry.

I couldn’t imagine going to see your favorite band’s last show and being surrounded by junkies while the front man is tweaking out on stage. So sad. The jam is pretty fantastic with the context being what it was. I’d say this is my third favorite Melt jam after 4/21/93 and 12/31/99.
That junkie itch striking at 1:19. That composed section was painful to watch.
...thank you for posting...
Can't miss version
Can't think of a better melt. A dark song like this actually benefits from Trey’s pain and sloppy playing. Glad he's doing better.❤
6:02 is scary as hell. That's tough to see. Trey could barely stand let alone play his songs.

This is a dark fucking video of Phish, they have some dark songs but live, if you ever wanted to go to a musically dark show this would have been it. my god.

Working class people do it for 40+ years w/o a year off. 50,60,70+ hrs/week. For a hella lot less $. The band toured, yes but with everyone getting days, weeks & months off down time to relax and recharge.
Do yourself a favor and just skip to 4:22, trust me.

Yeah Coventry was played in theaters for those that couldn’t get to go. I left my Jeep on the highway and hiked in, so I made it there, but they wanted every fan to be able to see what was supposed to be the last phish show ever( thankfully it wasn’t, cause it was a funeral stuck in the mud of Vermont)
Holy shit this video is dark. So glad Trey got sober.
how about that jam!!!!!!!
15:00 i wish we could know what he was saying to fish. it looks like he said something like he wanted to rock out by the way fish seems to give him the look to go out there and get it @ 15:10, and also by the way the jam goes after that point

God Coventry was such a disaster, and this started off horribly, but understandably at the time, but they got their later on. I have good memories and awful from this fest. Ditching my Jeep on the highway, hiking over 10 miles with whatever we could carry. Thank god we are where we are today, cause this was a fucking funeral
this is actually a really good version
I got out of being a hardcore head in 2000, so i missed this part of history. Cant believe the trey/drug rumors werent more prevalent after seeing this holy fuck what a mess. This jam is still dope though
Ironic title considering that this was an omen for what was to come...

as a 16 year old who's been listening to these guys since I was 3 I go to shows 100% sober and stay 100% sober. I believe that you can enjoy the music without the drugs. SO MANY people zoinked off their asses at the shows I've been to, and I never liked that. You'd think the fans would grow with the band, but evidently not.
Although he clearly tried, Trey simply could not handle his drugs like Jerry.

@novakaya

And I def wouldn’t say Jerry couldn’t handle shit. On any given night of brilliant performances from the mid 60s to the mid 90s he was on enough substances to flatten most humans into a weeping quivering fetal ball of worthlessness.

Chops Raintoieri unfortunately in a way JG was a “slave” to the heroin, cocaine for many years. I think he was in too deep, that brain chemistry was pretty wired for continued use. And I don’t think that he had the support. Trey “seems” to have had a better support network, legal obligations that helped. Drug court is rigorous, a fine program with accountability and understanding
