    Diocleation built the palace as a safe place to retire. He was born and raised in that area and wanted to go near home to retire. The "small" town near the palace was actually a large Roman city called Salona. Salona was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

    You guys are great! I really enjoyed watching you exploring old town of Split. People who were singing acapella songs in so called "vestibul" (an round building which the emperor Diocletian used, it was built in 4th century) are called "klapa" which is a Croatian word for dalmatian group of singers who sing in a unique way, they usually sing about love and life. That kind of singing is listed as a Intangible cultural heritage of humanity as is protected as that under UNESCO. We Croatians are very happy having good people, hope you enjoyed eating ćevapi! :)

    I am loving your filming style in Croatia! I too would love to eat "local foods" in the countries I visit. I guess in the US you could go for "soul food." I just read a quote from Anthony Bourdain talking about how the most flavorful dishes are generally the ones made by the poorer people of any country on a daily basis, because they had to make do with less desirable, cheaper ingredients, basically "do more with less", and those also tended to be the most filling and hearty dishes as well. I think I would agree with this, as those are the types of dishes I tend to gravitate towards, local "comfort foods." Thanks again for sharing another great video!

    In Croatia we have very simple and clean food preparation process - slow food. Food is natural and the taste is genuine. We don't use hot spices to kill bacteria like they do in Asia (where I felt only spice powder). Anthony Bourdain episode in Croatia demonstrated this kind of food preparation.

  • @geeell1917

    @geeell1917

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@robertbabic80 You are making the common error of assuming Spice = Heat. (Many people do this, so you are not alone!) There are hundreds of non-hot spices in the world, and using lots of these will make your dish "highly spiced" but not "spicy." It is a common failing in language that is prevalent in the food world. Spice is NOT used to kill bacteria in Asia or anywhere else because most spices are ineffective as anti-bacterial agents. You are also making the common error of lumping in all Chinese cuisine together, and ignoring the fact that the culinary traditions of each region vary greatly across that enormous country. The wealthier northern part of China may use lots of peppers and spice, while the rural southern provinces dishes use very little and are quite mild. The use or non-use of spice has nothing to do with "simple and clean food preparation processes." You know the main reason why Croatia or other cuisines do not have many spicy(hot) dishes? Because that type of spice was not native to the area, or was too expensive to use commonly. If it was grown there and widely available to the general populace, it would definitely be used in their cuisine.

Yugoslavs even have a joke saying that the Bosnian flag should be a cevap. Most things you experience would be a shared culture between Bosnian, Croatians, and Serbs as well as other former Yugoslavs, I know you're not trying to misinform anyone but I would be careful as there's a lot of nationalism, agendas, and misinformation. Personally I would of loved it if you spent some of your time in Bosnia and Serbia rather than spend several weeks only in Croatia. The prices are also a lot more favourable for tourism there. Despite what certain people want to counterfactually argue. However cevapi as we know them and certain other foods are very different to kebabs found in Anatolia or even Istanbul. It would be like saying spaghetti/noodles are really from China, whilst true it has also evolved over time, and Bosnia has probably the biggest relationship with cevapi as a cultural food.

    @domagoj Actually, it seems that ajvar is serbian - and not originally turkish or traditional local at all.. It was invented in Belgrade at the end of 19th century as a consequence of caviar shortages (rough times...) But it is definitely based on the type of traditional vegetable spreads and dips which are more balkan-caucasian (look up ajika) than anatolian (turkish) in character. Oh and yes, ajvar is fantastic. A definite superfood - super tasty and super healthy. I bet it will explode onto the international scene sooner or later.

    GREAT video. I wasn't really expecting Anything from the city with a name like Split (had never heard anything about it, had never even Heard of it before until your guys' videos), but MAN. What an Amazing old city. It's DEF going on my bucket list. It makes my history loving brain go ZIING! Haha XD But seriously. What an Amazing looking place, and it really is kinda crazy to wrap your head around just how Old some of the buildings and stuff are. And the fact that it's been Continuously occupied for Thousands of years..So Cool =D (Also, Mega Bonus points for any GOT stuffs too. Lol) Oh, also, because I *Also* didn't know what the difference was between bronze and brass (wasn't even something I've ever wondered), I looked it up: "The main difference between brasses and bronzes is that brass is mostly made of copper and zinc while bronze is mostly made of copper and tin." Interesting :))

    Just when I think I have the measure of you 2, you throw in another level. If / when you get over here I will take you for lunch at a "Les Routieres" cafe, it is where the truckers & general workmen go for lunch. Always the same formula, buffet all you want salad & cold cuts starter. The main meal of the day. Finally cheese or dessert.

    it is called ''klapa singing'' and it is traditional dalmatian singing(there is something similar in Sardinia).it came from middle ages and is derivative of church choir singing but common people started singing their songs with that music and made their own style.it used to be so common in Dalmatia.i remember when i was a kid we use to travel every weekend on the island my family comes from and i remember on that passenger boat people used to gather in different saloons on the ship so men used to stay at the bar and sing klapa songs(who ever wanted to sing just picked few other partners and start singing..where ever,when ever), usually by the bar,other played cards in other saloon,women and small children had their space and a bit older kids like teens ,their space.you can still find men in Dalmatia singing on the streets,caffes,boats...like-''you know we could sing now for a bit.sure,lets do it!''but it's slowly dying out sadly..

    It’s no wonder everything is made of stone. Everywhere you’ll see stones lying around. All the beaches, except for sand hauled in, are stone is the only negative to Croatia to me. I have that Tokyo 2020 shirt too and just got a black one. :)

    Actually, if it would be sand, sea water wouldn't be so clear. Waves are not big, like in ocean, so they don't grind stones that hard (thus no sand)...
