    Hi Chris, thanks a lot for sharing your experience:-) I am going to Panama, Hannibal Bank in a few weeks to have a go at the yellow fins:-) I wanted to attach my shooting line by splicing, like you do in the video, but unfortunately the spectra line that I ordered is not the type you can splice. So now I am back to my original plan of just using knots. Could you please tell which knot you would recommend for tying my shooting line? Having in mind that it should be able to handle yellow fin! Thanks a lot in advance. Anders.

    Great tutorial. Though I feel you are moving your point of weakness from the shaft end to the reel line end. Maybe there is some nice and stiff hollow core now. pulling fifty metres through would be fun, though likely unnecessary as I rarely spool my reel.

    Hey Chris, been using the lock with long bury for years on my float line's and bungees that I build. thing is for the ends of the float line's you can't use that method of getting a lock. Being a sailor I had been exposed to another method of getting a brummel lock. Take the bitter end and put it through the mainline to make a loop the size you want on the (for example plug end). Then the bitter end from on top through itself to form a inverted hole in the line, open as wide as you can with your fids . Then the entire plug and loop through the hole you made... and now you have locked it! Great thing about hollow braid is how much you can open it out. I will message you a link to a sailing video on how to do it.

  • @Chris-hx7ub

    Great video. One suggestion to make it even stronger. The taper on your cut is ok but it will probably break in a break test machine there every time. To improve this strength have the 12 cm or whatever length is required for the full barried short end. Then have a few cm (2 to 4cm probably) that is unwoven. Then cut one or two strands every have cm to make a more gradual taper. This will improve the strength in a break test machine. In the real world who know how much it really helps. But for a fish of a life time and if I am taking the time to go after then, then I take the last step to really maximize the strength of the line. Great video. Awesome demonstration. For attaching to a break away set up have you tested what the strongest attachment is? Seems that connections and always suspect for making a part fail. Also for blue water have you considered putting in some chaffing sleeve to help strengthen the loop so it doesn't have a sharp radius around a over threaded quick link. Also for blue water set up what size quick like and strength have you found best. Thank you.

    The hollow core is not as rigid as the std spearfishing dyneema. But if you handle your line correctly you will have no issues. The line does wear in a little and gets even softer and sometimes a bit thicker.

    Hi Grant I have not been able to find a supplier of the hollow core dyneema. The line available is either to tight and hard to splice or flattens out which causes drag. The reality is that you'll drown before breaking 100kg breaking strain on std dyneema so its easier and more convenient to use that.

    Great guide but one tough question. Why make the shaft end stronger than the rest of the setup? Wouldnt the later part be a weaker point? Id imagine that puting 300kg pure dynema on shaft and than a 100-150kg dynema as reel and possible FLOAT LINE you could end up on losing the gun? To me strongest point should be line attached from float to the gun, than weaker setup from gun to shaft... Better to lose shaft than entire setup with gun no? Refently Ive discovered new weak points. A dyneema going through reel start BROKE the core going through the reel core while the knot holding it stayed firm xD

  • @CoatesmansSpearfishing

    @CoatesmansSpearfishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Mike if the reel line breaks you still have the gun, and most buoy lines are in excess of 300kg breaking strain. So you should not lose the gun. I just use std dyneema anyway. This is for extreme cases where you need the extra strength.

  • @mikefue9597

    @@CoatesmansSpearfishing good catch, I think I have to reconsider my DYI float line with 6mm PVC and random 1.5mm dynema inside to something stronger. I just feel that I lose trust in every little details there are, especially after todays nylon REEL CORE breaking under not so big stress of a 20kg wahoo that wasnt event puting pressure on 45m empty reel and 35m float... Would you consider 1.3mm pure dyneema(sigalsub?) to get extra meters over 1.5mm or go 1.8+... I know 40m is little when wahoo gets a crazy run and the spool is gone in literally 2sec and there is only as much float you carry. Hopefully moving from wahoos to tunas sometime next year. Oh boy it hurts my pocket even before I consider.

  • @mikefue9597

    Have you tried any heavy duty swivels to avoid line excessive line twisting in any of tge setups? I have had 150kg+ snap hooks break on not too big wahoo to the point I removed any unnecessary conections, swivels and reinforced buoy straps/clips couse Ive had them breaking aswell... As they say, wherever you can try to double the safety. I just had craziest things happen to me looking over few houndred buddies experience here in atlantic :) Murphies law at its finest.

  • @CoatesmansSpearfishing

    @CoatesmansSpearfishing

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Mike, Yes on my std reel guns I use a heavy duty fishing swivel between my shooting line and reel line. A std 3/0 rolling swivel is approx 100kg breaking strain. So is fine for Spanish Macks even Wahoo. I guess I would use this for everything until I get to doggies or large pelagics over 50kg. Where you start to use float lines and floats. Then it is better to move over to much heavier gear. Snap hooks are crap, don't use them. Straight swivel with a quick release knot is best.
