    My association with this ride is not the movie at all. As a child, my father read the Uncle Remus Stories to me and did all the accents and different voices of the animals and he was hilarious! We had the best time laughing together. I’m not even sure I’ve ever seen the movie. I took my parents to DW about 5 years ago and rode Splash with my father and it was the best and most memorable time I’ve ever ridden it. He is now 74 years old and will most likely never get to visit DW again and he loves to go as much as I do! I’m so glad I got to ride it with him one last time. I’m sad to see the ride go and will always cherish the memories I’ve shared with my fathers there. Thanks for taking the time to make this video guys!

    I want to thank you Chris for documenting this iconic ride while we still have it. No, I'm not happy about the rebranding mostly because I grew up with it just the way it is,, and that kind of feels like I'm losing a part of my childhood and child/adulthood. I do understand it though I think we should stop trying to erase our past, our history because we are doomed to repeat it if we do. I do understand that at amusement parks it is out of place. I never even associated that ride with Song of the South I don't even remember seeing it. But I do remember the story of the Brier rabbit. I so love your videos they mean the world to me but most of the time they bring me to tears cause I miss Disneyland so much and the way things used to be so joyful and not so politically infused.... I am grateful that I'm older. Thank you once again your videos are just amazing...

    First off, I love the ride, have been on it many times in both CA and FL. i also saw Song of the South with my dad when I was 12. I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite Disney film by far. Fast forward a few years to me being a teenager learning American History. While SOTS is not about slavery, it is set during Reconstruction, an equally difficult time for African Americans. When Disney made the decision not to release it anymore, I got it. The movie was controversial from day one, with protests during its premier in the 40s through the later re-releases. Fast forward again MANY years to now...I'm 63, married to a Black man with biracial children and grandchildren, and yes, it's time to retire the theme. Thank you Chris for addressing it intelligently and sensitively. Like you, I trust Disney - they started discussing the change years ago. Those who are angry and don't get it, never will. Looking forward to TBA!! (sorry Amanda!)

    Aside from losing a much beloved ride, even sadder is losing a ride based on a true African-American folktale. The author, Joel Chandler Harris, was the illegitimate son of an Irish immigrant born in 1848. He went to work (and live) as an apprentice for a newspaper owner (who owned a plantation). As a 14 year old boy, he spent hours in the evening in the slave quarters listening to the language and inflections of Uncle George Terrell and Old Harbert who would tell tales to the children. These men became his role models as well as the models for Uncle Remus. Just facts I thought you all might want to know.

  • @KoriDawn

    @KoriDawn

    Unfortunately, Mr. Harris basically exploited those stories to make money off of those who originally share the stories with him. I am sure that he did not share any of his revenue from his book with them.

    And this is where I come in! As a person of color as you can see from my profile picture I want to give my personal opinion about how I feel about all of this. I found about the retheme announcement in September 2020 a few months after I graduated from high school and it absolutely broke my heart, it was the worst news I had ever gotten in my entire life….Splash Mountain was one of my very first Disney attractions when I went to Walt Disney world in July/August of 2015 for the very first time…I actually watched song of the South a year prior for the very first time and I had no idea it existed until I found on KZread in 2014. I would also like to say based on experience not all black people are offended by song of the south…and from experience I’ve seen online to those who are haven’t in seen the movie before and just want to find an advise to be offended and to those who are offended by the movie and the ride why not simply go some place else and let the fans of the movie and ride have what they want? If the Disney community can be diverse in different fandoms then so can fans of song of the south…Valarie Stewart who is on KZread just so happens to be the daughter of Nick Stewart who was Brer Bear in the movie, she’s my grandmother and I don’t like what Disney is doing to the her father’s legacy trying to erase all existence of song of the south while we fans are left with absolutely nothing but memories…what Disney is doing erasing actual black history for a fictional black princess who has done nothing for the black community and is using George Floyd as an excuse to do what their doing, I strongly disapprove of this and many other people against this retheme from what I’ve experienced and seen online for the past 2 years this is just Disney’s excuse in trying to get rid of song of the south even to a greater degree…I can’t speak for all black people but I will say there are those who have been m heavily misinformed and don’t even know the magnitude of what’s being done because of that misinformation. This is outrageous.

    FYI you know people of color only claim it be quote on quote “offended” only because they’ve never seen it right and they don’t know where to watch it? Their using their blackness as an advantage to be offended by something they’ve never seen that pertains to them as black people, black people don’t know the harm their doing and it’s sad. Splash Mountain is my favourite ride of all time as well ❤❤ thank you Chris for making this video. I was so so happy that i got to go with my family to Disneyland end of August and ride it one last time before the re-theme (which I am sure will be great but nothing beats Splash Mountain in my heart) . We actually rode it 7 times I think and made a little goodbye video haha. So sad to see it go. 💔

    so sad to see it go, many memories doing the "splash dash" with my kida when they were young and racing the other guests to be first in line and of course I always won even pushing a stroller!!!

    I think people are afraid to say there are good parts to the movie. Great lessons to be learned from the movie as many old Disney films had. Sad days to think people are not smart enough to know history and separate the good from the bad. I think they would ban Tom Cabin now

    Also, additional fun-fact; in the OG plans for the ride, Eisner wanted to have Madison the mermaid make a cameo in the ride as well. as an animatronic. True! =D Also, funny story; when I personally rode the WDW version of Splash Mt., the briar-patch was COVERED in spoon-bills! Also true! =)

    Another great video. I have 2 observations. The first one may have been covered by someone else in the comments (I did not check all of them) There is a 4th song. After the laughing place, the rabbits lament about Brier Rabbit. My wife and I always think it is funny that the song says "The rabbit is facing certain death!" You caught this in your video. Second, the drop into the laughing place is a tunnel right under Brier Bear's rear end. We call it the "Butt hole". Yeah, I'm like eight years old, but I laugh every time.

    Burrow's Lament What can poor Brer Rabbit do, To keep from becoming Rabbit Stew? Warnin' Brer Rabbit is wastin' my breath! That rabbit is facin' certain death! Don't you go to the Laughin' Place Or the fox will get you too! Stay away from the Laughin' Place! You must beware, the fox is there! Don't go in! Old Brer Fox has got his way At the Laughin' Place this very day!

    Whatever they do with the retheme, all I want is it to be more splash and less soak. The good ole days it was splash but something changed and it’s now soak mountain. I’d love to see the double sided log like at WDW but I’m sure it’s not wide enough for that.

    Hi Chris. If they called the ride Mardi Gras Mountain then the short version would be MGM. Keep having fun and on to the next Adventure.
