After his cult hit comedy The Volcano, Alexandre Coffre is back with the long-time anticipated adaptation of the ultra-cult French comics Spirou and Fantasio! With a strong and rather unfortunate start: Spirou (Thomas Soliveres), supposedly a bellboy in a palace of the French riviera, meets with Fantasio (Alex Lutz), a reporter desperate for scoops. There is no way these two can ever become friends, and yet, they will have no choice but team up together to rescue the Count of Champignac (Christian Clavier), an eccentric yet brilliant inventor, kidnapped by the henchmen of the villain Zorglub (Ramzy Bedia). Flanked by Fantasio’s rival, Seccotine (Géraldine Nakache), and by Spip, a wicked squirrel, they will soon live great adventures in a frantic chase between Europe and Africa to rescue Champignac and, well, the whole world with him!

I really enjoyed this movie too! The story was engaging and action-packed, the characters were likeable, the friendship between Spirou and Fantasio was well-developed and touching, and the romance Fantasio develops with Seccotine was sweet and cute, along with good chemistry between the three actors, and the comedy was gut-bustingly hilarious! It’s also commendable that the director managed to re-create the look and feel of the original comic, without dipping into being obnoxious or annoying. By the way, do you know the name of the song in the trailer, at 0:53? I’m trying to find it!

So weird how a French production would not care to get their own Franco Belgian comics right on movies. I understand the medium is different. Thats a given. And although I am no fan of US super hero comics, one must admit that Americans put a lot of attention to capturing the feel of the comics the movie is based on. Lucky Luke was just bizarre, for example. Here, the Zor reference to Lord Vader is not only unnecessary but out of the style. The trailer is full of gimmicks that are more reminiscence of actually great actors reactions like Louis De Funes but to get there and not overdo-it seem to be a problem for this production.

This is even gayer than the original comic, and it's okay.

I wish the French would stop turning great comics into terrible movies.

The humour’s all wrong. It’s like every other modern French comedy and nothing like the comics.
