I really admire how Russell sat back and allowed her to fully develop her ideas & statements and gave her that platform to speak uninterrupted. He very easily could have talked over her relentlessly but he chose not to and it's a phenomenal interview because of it.

Eric Duffert One cannot have reached his level of Wisdom without having a well-developed ability to LISTEN and OBSERVE. It was phenomenal to watch him wield the Power of Listening in this clip! I'm going to save it as an example in my inchoate teachings in the art, power, and skill of listening. Well done Russell! And well done Eric!--the construction and depth of your comment identified the unknown zeitgeist warming my cockles as I watched--a refreshing (new) experience of seeing a conversation BALANCED in the listening/talking. I'm saving your comment as well!

I love what she says about there being an Art to despair! It’s so true, rather than get taken over by your emotions. Realising that I am not my emotions yet come back to them each time and clear the space. Honouring and even listening to what the internal stories are, is healing and therapeutic as once you hear what’s being said you realise you are not what you think you are and can let them go, without being attached. Progress & Momentum is everything and not stopping!

As an Atheist and secularist, Marianne Williamson's spiritualism does not resonate with me, however her positivity and moral stance moves me, and I believe she would be the greatest at reaching out to the Religious Right and Evangelicals in showing them the "light" on progressive policies that will benefit them. -medicare for all as a human right -money out of politics - remove the dark money and corruption in government -criminal justice and law enforcement reform.

All my life, I was ridiculed for expressing my deep feelings. A passionate person was simply not allowed. After most of my life was spent in various medicine induced apathy sprinkled with terrible depression, I have weaned off all psycotropic meds & lo & behold, learned to accept my feelings. My biggest current sadness is how much time was lost trying to be "acceptable" to others. I'll use the time left to communicate my love to my family & make up for the time we lost. Dr's & psychiatrists have a vested interest in keeping you from dealing with life, see me again next week!

I appreciate Marianne's practice for helping depression .Bubble baths were always a favorite of mine for the blues too but we shouldn't ignore that there are biochemical causes for depression needing to be addressed and treated..In Joan Larson's book,HEALING DEPRESSION NATURALLY, she describes several different types of depression and their natural treatments ,using vitamins, minerals and amino acids and other natural supplements, with absolutely no use of pharmaceutical Drugs, whom she also believes are overprescribed and can be damaging. Also,it is true that 90% of seratonin(the feel good neurotransmitter in our brains) is produced in the GUT,meaning that a compromised intestinal microbiome is closely related to depression.Leaky gut, candida, low stomach acid ,gluten allergy,GMO foods, processed foods,Inflammatory foods, low intestinal flora, allergies, sibo, demineralized food, ect.ect ect..., all compromise the guts ability to digest and absorb nutrients and produce adequate amounts of seratonin.Heal your gut, heal your depression .

Love love love her - I do want to add though, that I don't think that it's always possible in the midst of severe depression to "show up for other people". When it's at it's worst you can't show up for yourself let alone anyone else. You can't just put it aside. That's sadness, not depression. There is definitely a time when you need to honour yourself and say, "I know others need me and I'm very sorry but I have to put myself first right now".

Anderson Cooper's interview pointed out that she's speaking from Scientology which we all know is very dangerous. The pain of death can kill you. You can literally die from a broken heart. Some need to be medicated for short of time. I do agree that Americans don't let people mourn. Other countries mourn for at least a year. I just lost my daughter a week ago. The pain is excruciating.

i think theres need to differentiate between endogen and exogen depression. she mentions people being depressed due to external circumstances and i do definitly think she has a point behind pharmaceuticals not being the optimal way to overcome such hopefully temporary despair, however endogen depression is not triggered by the romans crucifying you or your gf breaking up with you. also, there is a timespan of mourning in the dsm to differentiate it from depression.

Nicely said. It's important to mention that endogen depression is likely treatable with psychedelics like psilocybin, as the FDA has just fast-tracked major research on this. The level of "spiritual" experience on the psychedelic seems to be the curative factor in the process. I have a feeling that consistent spiritual practices in general can target this, as well.

Thank you for your comment Byron, it really helped me calm down knowing someone else recognized this. What she said about depression really hurt. My family has a history of severe clinical depression and bipolar disorder. My "clinical" depression is genetic. According to her my experience as well as my family's is not real. Also, I don't understand how she disregards postpartum depression; she is a woman. It is more often than not hormonal and can be artificially replicated in animal models. Endogen depression is real and she has no idea what she is talking about. Rant complete.

I love that quote of hers near the end, what a beautiful line... "There is an art to navigating despair, an art to navigating depression." Doesn't that fill you with hope, even in that terrible darkness, that there can be something beautiful of anything and everything? There is some graffiti I've seen on a wall I pass often that says, "Every stumbled step can become a pirouette." I love concepts like this. It can be so easy in today's world to fight evil with good, but I find it so much more powerful to continue finding the good within the bad and point it out and let the evil do its transforming on its own. Very beautiful. I also really loved Russell at 3:50 I hate to pick apart someone's every move but he makes a drastic movement, and I think its him dealing with that very heavy thought and reaching out for whatever is in his coffee cup, probably coffee, maybe even tea, but still I recognize so deeply that impulse to search for the answer outside of yourself like that, and I absolutely adored watching him yank his hand away and then look up at the camera as if to say, "Did you see that?" What a beautiful slice of reality thats been cut out and given to us. Thank you Russell Brand and Marianne Williamson!

When I gave her one of her books to sign that I had been reading and highlighting, Marianne was so humbled and happy to see all the highlights. She said this mean't so much to an author to see this. I am so glad she is running for President so people can hear her and her ideas. I like the idea of reciprocity. If someone is horrible to you, why continue to take it? Because you have to? That is something to really consider. If friends are disrespectful, can they really be your friend? Are they trying to teach you something? If your marriage is broken, why pretend it isn't? How can unfulfilling relationships lead to a happy and fulfilled life? I have discovered the concept of reciprocity will help to make life happier. Know who is toxic for you and build relationships with people who can and will respect you. When you are able to know your needs, you can communicate them to others. It is essential to be able to communicate our needs so that the other person(s) will not have to assume anything about you. For me, it is not about building walls, it is about boundaries and limits, tolerance and acceptance.

I can respect her choice to refuse mental health treatment for her depression but I think it’s dangerous for her to encourage others to do it too. Not everyone has the support system, financial situation or the coping skills to choose her path to wellness. Often times, psychotherapy and psychotropic medication can prevent a suicide or financial devastation and facilitate getting back to work and/or school in a more timely manner.

I know i had a friend who was on meds for seeing things, feeling down, not being able to sleep ect and they continued to keep adding medication to counteract other medications negatives. i said to her, yo, like what are they really for? how do they make you feel? ect she is no longer on anything. :) for her they didnt give her the talking support or any thing like that. she found meditation and still battles stuff today but has learnt triggers and has also learnt many things about excepting her past ect. i know this may not be doable for everyone, and medication does have its place! i just feel its sooo important to question to make sure you are getting all round care and support that is for your personal needs for the best recovery! !

How to move through a period of depression in a healthy way (from Marianne Williamson): 1) Realize whatever you're going through (like a big loss) is going to take time and don't push yourself to "just get over it", 2) Find your "safe people" -- the ones who can truly accompany you on this journey and bear witness to your pain, 3) Do small practices that relax you or give you pleasure and comfort, 4) Continue faith-based, stillness practices like meditation and prayer work, 5) Don't isolate yourself from others -- keep showing up for them and doing your work as it will give you a break from what is absorbing you (and you will still be able to go back and digest more of your feelings/pain afterward). Mindfully and self-lovingly approaching your grief and depression can be a big gift. Rilke said, "Let me not squander the hour of my pain."

A good doctor will tell you there's a difference between situational depression and clinical depression. Clinical depression may be over-diagnosed in our culture, but just because there's "no blood test" for something does not mean it's not real; in fact, that's a very dangerous fallacy. Plenty of serious medical conditions don't show up on blood tests or on our current imaging technology. Patients can suffer greatly for years as a result of being dismissed, and therefore not getting the proper medical treatment.

I always carry a fear of people. I don't ask for help. I don't like confrontations. I can get extremely angry. My dad was like this. He use to fly off the handle and rage. I have this in me, but I control it. Sometimes I don't want to. Sometimes I just want to scream at someone who gets me angry. I have done this and felt such remorse and cried (if I let it out on others). When I'm alone it's okay to scream. I yell at people all the time in my car, but that is something else, I think. But I relate to Russell when he says that he thinks people won't help him. I too am surprised when they do and when people are nice. It's almost like I'm not use to it.

I'm making art again and can get out of bed. I agree that there are issues with profit- seeking pharmaceutical folks, but it's not so black and white. Her characterization of the therapeutic field as mislabeling grief as depression is fallacious. That's not how therapists are trained.

Such beautiful truth. I've gotten quite a bit of this same insight from my step work. My understanding and faith in God was so misguided, Christianity so often preaches all you need to do is believe in Jesus. And that is so far off the mark I fear it causes real damage to both individuals and to society. Rather God is found in our relationships with each other. And in its simplest form isn't that truly what Christ taught?

Nailed it - love your brother as yourself - because your brother IS yourself - when we can see our own "dreamer" behind each dream figure in our dream, the dreamer becomes whole and he sees only one shared interest - his own desire to awaken from a dream of death - when the dreamer becomes whole in the dream he is ready to wake to the Christ (his true identity beyond sleep) - the oneness joined as one 😀

One may certainly overthink it however I do not think it is all that simple. I have no evidence that humans are naturally loving of their neighbor, rather are deeply selfish and self-centered. It's easy enough to say 'all you need is love' but to actually aspire to that and live it is another thing entirely. So that creates the question if one is truly willing to love their neighbor and if they are how do they go about doing that? Loving and serving your fellow man runs contrary to the basest and materialistic instincts of human nature so to do so takes practice, prayer, meditation, and guidance to achieve. Still when one refines the message down to the essence and experiences a real spiritual awakening then all the trappings around religion fall away as the dogma they are. They may remain enjoyable and comforting but at least for me they become meaningless.

@@merkazoidduff7651 thats a great point - and why for many (me included) it takes so long to accept the simple spiritual truths. Our experience in the world is run by the ego thought system (one or the other) - so to truly transend this conditioning often takes a lot of spiritual training - and raising up to consciousness what is really happening in our unconscious minds. Clearing this out is what allows us to start seeing more clearly and seeing that everyone is unconsciously run by the ego thought system to one degree or another. Seeing this we can be compassionate for ourselves and others as we understand when the Master says from the cross: "Forgive them, they know not what they do."

I feel this so much. The older I get, the more pressure I feel to have the right answer as to what God wants in order to feel closer to God and to obtain the state called Heaven. The things that define our reality that seem so essential lose their meaning as I lose faith in others and myself and then I care less about "trying" and it's difficult to decide what's important and what's worth it anymore. The people around you who you have no control over have the ability to affect your soul based on how you react and behave and it almost doesn't seem fair but then when you break it down - it's all just one massive illusion and test. The people you're with, the situations you're faced with all designed to see how you respond and if you're able to rise above and connect.

I remember clearly, after the BP oil spill, Marianne Williamson said if we hold hands at the beach, the ocean would clean itself. When pressed to clarify this, she actually responded and did so, she really meant it would clean itself. Now no one believes me that she said this, and finding a facebook post that may or may not still exist is proving to be quite difficult, but she also has a lecture series listed on Amazon called Spirituality and the Oil Spill (Marianne Williamson L.A. Lecture Series) and I am curious if she mentions this there... or if anyone has access to anywhere else or the facebook posts where she really did try to hold an event down at the beach where people hold hands so the ocean will clean itself. Someone else has to remember this, cos it was really crazy.

We now live an estranged life - from ourselves and from Nature which gives us all the information in relation to the nature of reality. Simon Peter asked 'Where is the Kingdom.' Christ replied, 'See, it is not here or there, but rather the Kingdom is spread across the Earth but men do not see it.' And in only a few hundred years - we have virtually destroyed it.
