Spiritual but not religious: an Iranian immigrant story | Ali Ashtari | TEDxManitoba
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Peace comes from within.
I am the Head of Research at Invenia Technical Computing where our team develops numerical approaches to optimize electricity consumption. I love it because the technical skills I acquired throughout my PhD are directly applicable, the work is innovative and exciting and it helps reduce emissions due to electricity grid inefficiencies.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Such a beautiful person. It's stories like this and personal experiences that make me never judge a book by it's cover.
Good Job. Takes a brave person to talk from the bottom of his heart to all.

I wish the world knew that Iranian people image is completely different with what they show to the world.Iranians are actually warm-hearted and they are really flexible when it comes to adapting to hard situations. There aren't alot of host countries with warm -blooded, kind people.Iranians treat the foreigners as if they are a part of their families! And they really do their best when they want to achieve a goal.Just give an Iranian a motivation and you can see them creating miracles.

What a wonderful message❤
Nice talk; thoughtful and empowering. You proved that same heartedness does not know any border nor any race. Good job, dada Ali
You did a good job Mr Ali Ashtari.
It was an admirable speech, it thrilled me that an Iranian talk about the true experience of not many but majority of us emigrating to western countries with the same unsatisfactions.Nice job Ali.

Miss you Winterpeg ;) and your warm people.
Yes, your body is free is Canada but your soul and heart are in bondage.
This guy is everything.
I have met Iranians who were torture victims of the Ayotollahs regime and who managed to flee the country. I typed out some of their statements for a Psychiatric Social Worker who was a volunteer worker for the Foundation for Victims of torture. They were horrific and heartbreaking they kept me awake at night.
u are so right. i meditate with no teacher, but had teachers before spirituality - not religion

He is one of those Iranian that exaggerate the situation to gain some attention from other people! His product is grief, Thanks TEDx!
🙏👍
I'm struggling not to fall sleep.... He talks too slowly! Edit: it was worth listening to the end!

The desperate vibes are annoying me. I am Iranian, I live in Iran and I can't feel him at all, like AT ALL! Sadly there are dozens of such Iranian people, I wish they can reach happiness and peace of mind wherever they want.

Sorry you are still on the wrong path, islam is what you need, I left Iran 30 years ago, after I over came my hate, I start studying islam. I found so much. I suggest you watching some of the convert stories on line. Stop talking bad about Iran. You are wrong, you said this path is different for every one, so khomanei got what he wanted out of his believe, because you did not get the same thing does not mean he lied or he was wrong. The meditation you practice, is like searching in an emptiness, to fill your emptiness.

There are converts to almost every religion. There are many non-Christians who convert to Christianity later in life, as well as many convert to Sikhism. Convert stories to any religion are not of much worth unless the reasons the converts give for why they have chosen to their particular religion(s) are not strong, convincing enough.

Open a cold beer. That will make you "spiritual".
So let me get this right.....he flew from a restrictive regime, where he felt he was limited in terms of freedom. But then he done a meditation retreat in his appartment with no: music, talking, internet, phone etc. ?? That seems counterintuitive and restrictive

There is a big difference between a restriction that is imposed upon you and a restriction that you choose to follow. People often find the noise of a windchime in their own garden to be charming while if that windchime is in their neighbor's garden, they find the noise annoying. The difference is they know they can stop the noise of the windchime in their own garden anytime they like.
چه عالی که از خوبیهای کشورت تعریف میکنی. آفرین برات دست زدن. برو خوشحال باش. حیف وقت. خیلی مزخرف بود. البته نصفش رو بیشتر نگاه نکردم.
What you gone do about your islamic name? Just saying bc you are worth to have an Iranian name.
I live in US and this guy is BS-ing
The chemicals dropped got to his head
According to the history basically any religious practicing can be used badly. I am from Iran as well and have not been there for several years. Similar him, I have done the meditation courses and pracrices. I would like to say that meditation practicing can be abused to keep the Buddhism person as a religious one since Buddhism or Hinduism governments show the Western or Muslim people who are meditating; as advertisements for their Budhisim religious power. Anyway, any religion and its parctice may be used dangerously for the power to control individuals' mind and brainwashing!

Sanaz The last part of your comment isn't proper English (.... and this is your English speaking). In particular when you use "is" after "this". The correct sequence would be: .....and is this.... ? In addition, the ing at the end of "speak" should be discarded as well. However, these two steps wouldn't correct the sentence.

He spoke English well, the accent is not something that a person can change, it is related to the first language...every nation has a specific accent when they speak English as a second language... look at Italian, Indian, French, etc.
