Spins With Ariel Tweto - MzeroA Flight Training
m0a.com We can recite the spin recovery procedure easy. But have you ever put it into action? In this video I take my good friend Ariel Tweto who you might remember from Discovery Channel's Flying Wild Alaska up for some spin training.

Keep the videos coming. Ariel makes them fun to watch as well because you're seeing it through the eyes of someone discovering new things.
If there were more young people like Ariel, the world would be a better place.
Terrific chemistry in cockpit....Ariel as an experienced pilot enjoyed reviewing spins n turning stalls, CFI teaching important skills in simple steps EZ to remember. The normally boring debrief was fantastic.... Ariel's enthusiasm and CFI reviewing steps....great chemistry !!
This is something I recently experienced unexpectedly during flight training and I'm glad I did. I know PARE by memory but froze when when I was in a spin by accident. Fortunately my CFI saved me. Did it again and CFI saved me again. Yet that experience taught me to recall at least the first thing to do automatically: Power to Idle. The rest of the steps became easier to recall because I immediately felt the airplane recover from it. It's one thing to memorize the steps to recover its another to actually experience it and actually recover. In my case, the spin came unexpectedly from a power on stall. The shock factor of being in a spin for the first time coupled with the unexpectedness was enough to "freeze" me. My CFI trained me well enough that I'm now "spring loaded" and ready to recover if I ever get myself into that situation.

Seeing this done so well, the inducing and the recovery, as though it were not a big deal really makes me want to try it. At the point I'm at I can't, but I look forward to trying it! As long as the PIC knows proper recovery procedure this would be an absolute blast!

I don’t want to Solo without any spin training first. Curious question I wonder how a P-51 would do in spin, or better yet my dream plane a Kit Fox.
My RV 4 was a good one to spin. It took about 20# fwd stick to initiate recovery. It didn`t come out by itself like the skychickens do.
So important! I asked my instructor to show me spin recovery and off-airport operations. Later as licensed, it saved our skins when dealing with rotor turbulance on take-off one day, using rudder instead of aileron to maintain control. Phew!

Never really did spins. My instructor demonstrated 2 at night in a 150 early on in my private training. With all the different planes I fly now I check the airspeed for actual stall speed compared to the indicator but don’t put myself in a attitude or condition to get into a spin. Definitely neat to watch!

@downwithreactionaries9031
4 жыл бұрын
@@notallowedhere9229 my stomach has no time to react before the spin is over. Well, I did it in C172 which does not really spin well -- you have to hold the extreme controls to keep it in spin (so your whole body is in tense of using forces). Once you let the control go, it gets out of spin very quickly. Don't be scared by it -- get a good instructor, and do it yourself, you will like it and build high confidence

Do you guys not do two 90 degree turns for HASEL in the USA?
@bonchie1
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we do (although rarely do people do a full 90 degrees in practice, although you are supposed to). But they are in a 172 in this video. There's not much point. There's no wing stopping you from looking almost completely backwards.
Is there any truth to the fact you are actually falling faster than 35 kts since the relative wind is hitting the pitot tube at an angle when your spinning?
@davidwhite8633
5 жыл бұрын
jtkent28 You’re descending ( not falling ) at a steady rate , so it’s a simple 1G manuoever at or around stall speed ( because both wings are stalled-the inner /lower wing much more than the other one ) . The A/S indicator will read somewhat lower because , as you said , the relative airflow will be at an angle to the pitot tube head and the aircraft is continuously yawing while in the spin.
I'm felt my heart rate increase watching this. Awesome!
doing all those stalls, is that hard on the airframe? if you compare a non-training 172 vs. a training 172 after 5 years, what would be the difference? Also, has there ever been a 172 (CFI) training fatality where someone couldn't recover from those stall spins? probably not but i thought i would ask.

I believer personally I'd also be looking for another instructor. Sounds like the person you're flying with is rather "Set in their ways"! You don't need that. You need someone that realizes the importance of proper training of student pilots, preparing them for potential emergencies. Remember: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
@Mike-01234

You have a straight and level guy maybe retired airline ATP. If you like your CFI stick with him for the regular stuff take some training in a aerobatic plane Extra 300 or pitts upset recovery training is great stuff get into a real spin. Cessna can recover just by letting the nose drop and rudder go neutral takes longer then using opposite rudder. High altitude spins are really not an issue. It's flying in the pattern maybe on a go around this recently happened in Texas with a cirrus a few months ago. The real training here is not getting into the spin in the first place because recovery at 300 feet is next to impossible. Spin training isn't required what is required is to learn how to avoid stall's and spins how the stick feels when stalls are going to happen.
@prorobo
4 жыл бұрын
A smart CFI won't demonstrate a spin if they're not proficient in them, which most aren't. It's a good way to end up as a hole in the ground.
what happens with your website
If the 172 is in trim it will fly itself out of a spin assuming you have enough altitude. When I was doing unusual attitudes under the hood and got into trouble I would release the stick and it would get me out of trouble the I would take over again. I don’t know if the instructor ever knew.. way back ie early 60s

Why do you never mention what actually causes one wing to be stalled more than the other and thus, the auto-rotation? also never mentioned is why the rudder is being applied to the right, yet it spins left? (or are they just not using right rudder at all to kick it off, just let it yaw itself left.) why not enter the spin from a straight ahead stall? a spin is not always related to a turning stall...
@3snowyman
7 жыл бұрын
Why would you apply rudder to the left if you're spinning left? You want to stop the spin, not enable it.
@MsWheelsuptime

I was referring to starting the autorotation... if they are coordinated (no skid no slip) in a turning stall it could just hang out in that banking stall all day (or until it hit that ground).

***** I misunderstood his unedited comment. Luckily he edited it to clarify his question :)
@davidwhite8633

Ginny Let’s start off with the turn rather than the straight ahead stall. The FAA realizes, I think , that most stall/spin accidents occur out of turns , and want students to recognize this , so they put some emphasis on this type of stall. Most students know that if their nose is 20 degrees or more above the horizon in level flight a stall might be in the offing! In any ( left or right ) fully coordinated climbing turn the higher wing is always at a higher angle of attack. So , when stalling out of one the high wing will always stall first , leading to a so-called over-the-top spin if not corrected immediately. The exact opposite is the case in any descending turn and rolling into the lower wing begins , and an under-the-bottom spin commences , the usual cause of this type of accident near the ground or in the traffic pattern. This answers your question about the rolling. In climbing or descending turns one wing always stalls before the other so autorotation begins ‘automatically ‘ in both cases. However, in a straight-ahead coordinated stall both wings are at the same angle of attack and some rudder has to be applied to create the yaw ( with its concomitant increase in lift on the outside wing ,and initiation of the rolling moment ).
@davidwhite8633
5 жыл бұрын
Ginny I almost forgot to mention the level turn. In this , if fully coordinated, the nose will pitch down-nothing more--no tendency to roll or yaw because in this case , unlike the climbing or descending turns , both wings are at the same angle of attack.

Spin recovery is not needed for an instrument rating or a private or commercial certificate, either, unfortunately. At least in the U.S. To become a CFI one must be trained in spin entry & recovery. When I was in college I got in trouble when I went out to do spins by myself because my school wouldn't permit spins until CFI. I didn't know the gyros would tumble and the director & mechanic found this the next day. I almost got kicked out because they saw solo spins for a PPL student as a super-evil violation of flight school policy
