I kinda went the other way round once. I spun my yarn from double coated fleece of highland sheep, kept all the outercoat, neps an noils and used them as quilt batting. Waste not, want not. Always happy to see a new video from you. I learned how to spin from your tutorials. Huge inspiration, hope you're doing okay :)

I'm SO glad to see that tip about not trying to center pull silk from a turkish spindle - my last fiber festival haul included my first turkish spindle *and* some mulberry silk I wanted to try for the first time. 😅 You definitely saved this beginner some heartbreak and wasted fiber! Top whorl it is!

If you want to spin and ply silk with your Turkish spindle, just make two turtles and ply them from the outside strand instead of one turtle plied from both ends. 💜

Wow! I'm a quilter and I have never heard of silk lap for the batting! That would be great for lining a quilted jacket or vest. Drapey and light. Thank you for the work with silk I've not done any spinning with straight silk myself yet.

You can put a bowl on your scale, tare it out, and then put the fiber in it, that way you don't have to worry about the fiber falling off the scale.

Initially wanted to learn to knit some thread I have laying around but then got curious on how we even process wool/ cotton/silk to thread to clothes. THIS IS THE BEST RABBIT HOLE I FOUND!!! LOVE HER and watching the craftsmanship of this awesomeness!!!

I love the section that shows the footmen in action. The geometry and mechanics of that portion of the wheel are fascinating.

I was really surprised how short you cut the silk bits. Makes me think that if I ever do get a drum carder, I may well be able to use all this rabbit hair I've been collecting... And thank you for introducing me to silk lap. Wool often makes me itch, but I really want to try natural dyeing and spinning some protein based fibres, and silk lap may just be the thing I've been looking for.

if your problem with wool turns out to be lanolin, which it is for some people, try alpaca instead!

@@mewho8057 I can lie bare skin on a sheepskin and don't have trouble with lanolin in skin products, I'm just very sensitive to anything prickly including my own braided hair, I presume I'm annoyed by the cut ends of the hair from the shearing since the naturally tapered ends on the sheepskin hairs don't bother me, and cashmere's fine. Never had problems with finely woven wool slacks or oddly enough the wool pile on this wool blend velvety stuff I'm currently wearing, but an actual wool scarf around my neck makes me itchy. I think I'm just easily irritated ;)

@@bunhelsingslegacy3549 you can also use natural dyes to dye soybean fibers, though the results will not necessarily match those on wool

I have both some silk lap for spinning AND a loveky little silk quilt. I must say it is delightful. Light and warm, and with two alpaca blankets, warm down to freezing temperatures!

Would you please do a video someday with the tablet loom you showed? A how to use it, but also what kind of projects you can make on it? It looks really fun! I've just started getting into weaving on an antique pin loom. I really like it, but all I've done so far is make like 100 squares. Can I just shout out and praise how you time the pedals to the music? It effects the fps of the footage it seems, but I don't care, it's a lovely way to showcase the process and made it so therapeutic to watch even

I'm currently working on my first spinning project. It's a beautiful lilac corriedale combed top that I got from a local shop. I am not going to buy any more fibers until I've spun this one up fully. My yarn stash is already a problem and I don't have room for a fiber stash. Hahaha.

Thanks for this video! I recently picked up some silk lap, had about one session where I tried to spin it directly with my wheel and ended up putting it away in frustration. I liked the look of that blended yarn so I'll give that preparation method a try!

I love spinning silk lap! Your methods were so interesting. I don’t have a carder, so I really enjoyed seeing that. I usually pull apart small sections and spin on my wheel. Beautiful textured art yarn. I ply it with thread. I will provide weave a piece with it (probably a scarf). So much fun!

Such a fun material! I feel like carding it with black wool would be fun for some sparkle. With a supported spindle, do some come with metal tapered tips to prevent you snapping it off if using it to draft with such material?

This was hand dyed and I got it from the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival so it was a premium purchase. I think I paid $10/ounce but as you saw, a little goes a long way. Also, I'm so glad you enjoyed the music! 🎶💜🧶

Thanks for the inspo. I was a longtime quilter before I returned to sewing and knitting and spinning - and I’ve a silk batting I never used in a quilt, although may use it in a quilted coat……well, if I don’t, would be fun to dye and spin the yarn, I’d drum card it much like you did, with some merino bits and pieces. Thanks again, creative juices activated

I've got some silk fiber stashed. I'm planning embroidery yarns for re-enactment, but I haven't had the self-confidence to try spinning them yet. Wool is so much more approachable. :)

Have you ever tried to weave a boucle tweed? It could be a really cool way to show off the colors and textures of your yarn designs! Might be a fun idea to experiment with on the mini loom too!

I purchased a brick of Mulberry silk. I'd like to blend it for mittens and maybe a cowl. No idea what to do for prep. I have a blending board, homemade combs, a small & medium carders with a bunch of merino!

Goodness you're talented...and I sooo what to do what you do, but all that equipment must have cost a fortune, or lifetime to acquire. Definitely gonna do a deep dive into your videos, but if you haven't answered already in them...how did you get started, and obtain all the beautiful technology you use. My passion is fiber, but I am having difficulty conceiving a way to get a workshop going. Affording the tools is a huge barrier. Did you use a business loan or investors, or were you self-supported in financing the beginnings up to present? Thanks for sharing your book of the world. Great job.

I've collected and gathered lots of things second hand over time. I have a playlist of DIY spinning tools that won't cost a fortune to get started. It doesn't have to be expensive. 🧶🥰💜

I have some white silk caps they were called but the same as yours but smaller and I have been wondering how to use them so this was really helpful. I would have never thought to cut it. Oh and I love your little loom, how cute. I have been wanting a small one so I will have to check it out.

Glad to help! You can do all the same things with silk caps that I did here. They are just not as big. Happy spinning!

I just realized you are drafting with your hands/thumbs sort of facing each other- interesting. My forward thumb normally orients more toward the oraface. I need to try your style.

I am in a bad mood with silk at the moment as it mostly seems to just hang around and cause trouble, but i found that it's way less naughty when plied. If anyone has some singles silk/silk blends which is misbehaving, giving it a ply (chain or standard) seemed to help. Also sizing up needles and using metal needles when knitting it makes a big difference

If I ever got the chance to spin silk lap I'd most likely use it as is on my drop spindle. If only because I don't have access to a drum carder or hand cards at this time, but spindle yarn can be just as beautiful on its own. Maybe ply it with a wool single then use the yarn for heels and toes in socks as a contrast colour with lots of strength 🤔

I have no idea where you could find silk batting like this in the UK. Maybe someone else can comment on your question? If you can find silk caps or silk hankies, you can treat them the same way. I hope you feel better soon!

I love how your yarn came together! I usually spin from top, so I will always spin worsted from top or a worsted/woolen type yarn from batts. So, I wondered why you wouldn’t card your batt down further to blend the silk until the batt became more homogeneous? Would the colors blend too much and you’d get a heathered color with slubs instead of the two distinct merino colors and the silk? The only blending I’ve done is with carders to create fur or blends that give off a certain overall shade for needlefelting.

I could have carded it more. I wanted this to have lots of loft so it will squish out when it is woven between the warp threads for my novelty fabric. That was part of why I left it full of texture and spun it woolen. 😊🧶💜

I cannot imagine the cost of using batting IN SILK for a quilt, but I suppose some people love to live in luxury, I can barely justify the cost of cotton over poly batting😭😂

Is that you playing the background music? Just beautiful and perfect in matching the spinning. Do you hear your own music (all with the same speed) in your head when you spin?
