Spinners, Snakes and windsocks on kites

Спорт

My 1,764th kite video. As I'm still unable to fly because of the virus lockdown, this is another compilation of old video clips that I made to fill the gap until I can start flying and filming again.
Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz .

    Love those rainbow spinners. They bring a cheerful atmosphere. For some reason they brighten the day. Glenn had a good time here at Long Beach. In the last video of the Kite Festival; I had his black witch on a broomstick "riding" over the ocean waves. He had a great hands on approach video for the Kite Festival.

    Glad you enjoyed it, Dewey. Yes, some of the spinners are very fast, but it all depends on the wind speed of course. They need a good swivel, and sometimes the one fitted is not really up to the job and needs replacing.

    The first one you mention is the Bubble Mickey, designed by the late Willi Koch. I once had four of them, but have passed two on. Apart from these four, I don't think I've ever seen another one in either a video or photo, so I guess there were only a few ever made. I don't know why, because it's a great item.

    @JimNicholls

    You asked a similar question once before, I think, and I told you I didn't know. I have no idea how you'd measure the speed of a spinner, and it varies greatly with wind speed anyway. The efficiency of the swivel probably makes a difference too. In any case, I'm just interested in how the item looks rather than which is the fastest.

    @@JimNicholls out of your experience what would say wind strength would be good for the bigger kites? Any particular windy speed i should watch for

  • @JimNicholls

    @@TheMrlololol Entirely your choice as to what you are comfortable with. The makers always give recommendations, which vary from kite to kite. In general, soft kites are safer than sparred kites (no sticks to break), and the bigger the kite the more it pulls, so in strong winds I only fly small parafoils and sleds. Personal safety is important. I used to have a Mega Sled 81, which pulled like a tank in high winds and had a scary moment with it when the wind suddenly changed. If it stops being fun, then it's probably not safe.
