SPINNAKER SAILING FAIL | Ripped Sail. Broken Stanchion. ANGRY Captain.

This video starts out amazing with the longest white/pink sand beach we have ever seen but it takes a turn for the worst as we attempt some downwind spinnaker sailing to St. Martin. Let's just say it was an EPIC FAIL and we ended up ripping our sail and breaking a stanchion...

Love the vid. This time, it’s the reality, and the rawness of each of you. During editing, I am sure you thought about what to show, but seeing frustration, apologizing, Sierra’s endless positivity, Billy’s determination - all made for the authentic side that keeps me watching and a huge differentiation over the more idealistic channels. Great job guys! You are rocking it!

Saw first Tula video last week....Sierra doesn't seem to get mentally bent out of shape and is normally positive. Billy had a reason to loose it for a bit here but he sincerely apologized to Sierra. This video was well worth the time and I enjoy how well these two get along.....caused me to subscribe. If the cylinder walls aren't scored....back running in four days.

That would be a no to eating baracuda (or any large fish), especially if there is any chance of cigutera, the toxin has a cumulative effect so you might get away with it for that fish but that won't mean you are ultimately going to escape it, not something you want.....besides they dont eat very well anyways. Maybe consider a spinnaker sock to help you enjoy the downwind sailing experience? Keep up the great work/life, cheers

We cruised the Bahamas for five years and were pleasantly surprised to find that Baracuda were our favorite fish dinner. Anything under 30" or five lbs was considered free of ciguatera. Just cut a filet, do a nice marinade for a couple of hours, throw it on the barbecue and it's out of this world good. The only danger is getting too close to the teeth after boarding the fish.We solved that with "Fire in de Hole", a bit of vodka down the mouth. In 15 seconds the fish is out for the count.

You guys could do with some spinnaker lessons. Next time you hoist the kite hot you're angle up to a broad reach, this will keep the kite away from the forestay. Sailing dead down wind is probably better with no main. But try sailing hotter angles and gybe downwind. when you get you're angle right you will generate more apparent wind, building you're speed, which when you have the speed you'll then be sailing deep and fast, if you loose the apparent wind just head up, build speed and as the app wind moves forward you follow it down, so no need to be adjusting sheets. Love you're videos, keep it up, cheers from Down Under, Rustie.

2 tips for hassle free spinnaker hoisting. 1. If possible hoist it behind the foresail. 2. tie the sail with wool until to top of halyard, then when the sheets are tightened, the wool snaps and sail fills. Other than that you got away lightly with damage. Keep at it kids, it gets easier with practice.

Use a barber haul or twing on your spinnaker sheet to move the lead slightly forward. It will stabilize your sail. Sailing a little higher and therefore jibing a few times also stabilizes the sail. Up in the lulls, down in the puffs. If this sounds like racing tactics, it’s because it’s SOP, it’s how it’s done. A couple of yarn ties will help when hoisting to keep it from filling prematurely. Peace.

I’m sure you have plenty of spinnaker experience, a couple of suggestions ..... Leave Genoa out so wraps are harder to happen when hoisting.. Pull spinnaker up from mast less friction, easier to go up faster.. get a centering ‘prod’ or bowsprit and keep clew tight to it. Use elastic bands on spinnaker so you can hoist fully before breaking out . Don’t sail dead down wind 10+ degrees off so much better ( without a long 90 deg pole) But good for you guys for setting it even if hard! Cheers Warren

Schools of Barracuda scare me when I'm free diving or Scuba. But what scares me even more is the thought of having to eat one. I know people that do because sometimes in the Caribbean it's the only thing you can spear or catch on a rod and reel. But even with all the crazy precautions they take it's still something you wouldn't want to do unless you were stranded on a desert island and the only thing you could catch would be a Cuda.

Never been to Barbuda, that beach looks amazing, I doubt you’ll find anything like that uninhabited area like that anywhere else in the Caribbean. Going to St. Maarten is like going back to civilization. Tourists, cruise ships, people, grocery stores, cars, however with COVID19 not sure what will greet you there. Perhaps the environment will have a break to recover there. The French side, Marigot, is nicer with cafes, bakeries, local food joints. The lagoon in the middle is gross, where the business stuff is done. Simpson Bay pretty, Philipsburg has the big cruise ship port, great grocery store tourist, boat gas dock, etc. I guess you know that by now. Good luck.
