Spinal Cord Injury, Part 1, by David Bailey

Спорт

This short video will show you the status of a few people living today with Spinal Cord Injuries. If you have a heart, it will touch you, along with giving you some insight into what it's like to live with spinal cord injuries. Not just for the injured person, but their entire family.
But there is more to this story! Progress is being made in Spinal Cord Research! And ultimately, this story could end happily - with a real treatment, and someday, a cure for spinal cord injury.

After John, a friend of mine was paralized in a motocross crash I contacted David, and he imediately called him in the hospital. We spent the day at the Indy supercross with David. I later injured my back racing. It was just a herniated disc, I couldnt imagine worse. If you see this David, you made a diference with John. Thanks Jason #92

If you quit, stay quit. But please stay active! I'm your age and was a pro when you were. Hell, I probably know you. I've seen some gnarly ass shit - and lost a lot of friends racing vet pro in the 2000's. Not worth it. I wish none of those guys had ever raced. Most of them were not fast in the "old days". They got crazy brave when the 4-strokes came out. But their fundamentals were not good. I like your fishing idea. You already went fast bro - you have nothing left to prove.

I want to make a thank comment to David Bailey, and also Davey Coombs one of the most sincerely nicest people, who I was lucky enough to actual meet, and he was as cool as he looks on tv.I been to motorcycles for a long time, mostly motocross, but,I turn out to be more of a "Steve Wise" type of rider,I had just done my first road race at Pocono raceway 1987,at the last race of the W.E.R.A. season on a Yamaha FZ-750,a little big to start a race career with but I pull it off,and even won a 50 dollar gift certificate, for third place in the open class,on a stock bike, the bike did everything I asked it to do,and you can't complain about that, but there was a few moments were it almost killed me...one in particular with everyone watching but I brought it to a stop five feet from a steel wall from 150mph. I get back to just riding it around and meet a bunch of new motocross buddies, one guy in particular who kept on about me getting killed road racing, but he did no how good I was,and just kept saying get off that and come race motocross with us,your gonna get killed on that thing,I never told him I wanted to go to the isle of man,he just selling the motocross deal so finally I gave in.Right away,my cockiness sets in and I start telling all his friends my plan to ride all 3 classes 125,250,500,not ever raced a real CR yet,on a tough track, all his friends were like oh really, most riders I found out relatively fast asking don't ride two classes,I stop I was in that kind of shape, and had the skill to pull it off but know now your body probably can't store enuf energy to do it,well I was luck enough to get a really awsum first bike thanks you guys des nations bikes,my 1986 CR 250 was the works production bike, and mine was dialed,I got it from a pro who's dad had been had been porting cylinders for 40 years tom marsh sr ,back to racing englishtown motocross track was my trial by fire, but all thru the pits there was this buzz about David Bailey, and I had know idea who you were and what they were talking about, for short while, but still had no idea of your tremendous talent on a bike till I watched the 86 des nations video, also I am a student of motocross as you are,I even asked Gary for job helping teaching MX,mainly to help new guys get going on the right foot. But that tape of David on the 500 was the longest I got to watch you ride and now I know why Davey Coombs acts like he want to shine your boots and wash and wax your cars and bikes, because you were really that good of a rider, even myself I can get on a 125 and do what john did,and I have at Englishtown in open class and prize was a DQ,for being on 125 huh, thanks for the video, now I know why my 86 CR 250 was my favorite engine,it was that des nations race ment a lot to Honda, mainly Honda didn't want to disappoint you,and Johnny and Rick,so they made their works bike a production bike,I never did figure it out till I saw youal ride in Italy,I was telling people Honda wanted to win those national titles, but they were think ing of the global market, sadly my bike was stolen and all the others are ice racing in upstate New York, what no really...I spent several years trying to locate 86 CR 250,porting guy even told me,when I asked him hey this is your sons bike you probably did a real fancy porting job and he leaned over and said hmmm,no just a little polishing it looked pretty good already...to my amazement.thanks for autograph at Daytona Dave, and Johnnie at englishtown.john signed my seat and didn't write Johnny O,he wrote Omara , and almost die when I told him wait that's not right,I made him do both sides of seat,we just laughed.thanks again.

I raced on the same track with Danny, twice. He was incredible. I beat him on a start in one moto and he passed me quickly. LOL Then he lapped me again and I finished 8th in that moto. LOL Damn he was fast. He blew past me on the inside on a crusty off-camber, and it was literally at that moment when I decided to find another goal in life. Not kidding - that was a real deal. Cheers and Salute to Danny. :)

That’s a very true video w facts that still stand firmly today. I’m just wondering if anyone witnessed the 2006 San Diego Sx where James Marshall (myself**) broke c-2, c-5 & c-6. Because as having my crash live on television, gives equal credit towards our SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) community. They slept on me…. No uncle dB!!😞🤦🏽‍♂️

EVERYONE WHO RACES WEAR A NECK BRACE! I compression fractured my L5 and couldn't feel my legs, but luckily for me the swelling pinched my spinal cord and didn't sever it, so the feeling came back after the swelling subsided. I GOT LUCKY. 800 dollars for a nice neck braces versus hundreds of thousands in medical bills and the rest of your life in a wheelchair is a cheap price to pay.

Would immediate cortisone in spine or SOMETHING have saved any of these? Is there any kind of back protection that might have prevented? I'm just wondering what is learned out of all this for "the next guy" ? Seems like until there are some amazing medical advances via stem cell research or whatever that the BEST right now is working on prevention....no?

MX racers should wear some type of spinal cord protection and certainly a neck brace - anything to lessen the chances of this happening.

@howieramzer oh come on. sure there are risks with everything even eating and drinking but riding a motorcycle much jumping a dirt bike exceeds any sort of risk that is reasonable. There is nothing wrong with doing these activities and no one deserves serious injury for it but the consequences should be weight more to most people who do them i think.
