Hi all.
Today we are on the hunt for some Kahawai in Kaikoura for a second time.
On our previous trip we had a lot of excitement and good fun. This time around we had plenty of hook ups, landed a lot of fish and there is some great action-packed footage. Enjoy the video.

Thats what we used to do as kids back in the 1960's when we camped at Goose bay. Caught heaps of kahawai off the rocks. Used out trout rods, so light gear fun. We used small Z spinners.

30 years ago I filled a fishbin with kahawai in about 30 mins, I think it was at the mouth of the Hapuku river. Seriously a fish on every cast. Glad to see theres still plenty about!

Kahawai are a fantastic fighting fish and good eating too. There are still plenty around. In fact we filled a fish bin recently within about 40 mins. Thanks for your comment.

Gorgeous place to be especially early in the morning. I was out there in my kayak early one morning and the dolphins came in chasing the kahawai herding them into the bay. They were breaching the surface and thrashing around and the dolphins were smashing into them. Is that a little silver pilchard or a ticer? Looks quite small how many grams do you use? Also what lb mono leader do you like on your braid, and also what is the best knot to join nylon to braid? Thanks very much for the great video

Hi Jay, Yep, it is certainly a magic place when the weather plays ball. The lure I am using is a 22gm silver ticer. I am using a 30lb leader on 30lb braid. I use the improved Albright knot or an FG Knot. Thanks for watching and please like and subscribe if you haven't done so already. 🙌👍

Hi I hope you have been catching heaps of Kahawai! I broke my graphite 8ft rod yesterday battling Kahawai at the Waimak. May I please ask what line weight/model backbone is the one you use? Thanks very much. Your videos have greatly helped and inspired me this Summer. Cheers!

Hey Jay, We have been smashing the heck out of them. I have the Shimano Backbone Spin 8ft and it's a 2pc rod 6-8kg. I'm running 20lb braid and the same weight for the leader. That's great that you enjoyed the videos. Tightlines.

@@canterburyfishingadventures Hope you have been catching heaps of Kahawai! Quick question please about your trace? Is it 20lb flourocarbon or nylon? Why do we need a trace? I experimented yesterday tying straight into the braid and still was hooking up the same. I did it because my trace broke off. What is your opinion on the benefits of a trace please?

Hi Jay, I have certainly been catching my fair share of Kahawai. Sorry to hear you broke your rod. Mine is an 8ft Shimano Backbone Spin and it's a 2pc rod. I'm running 20lb mono leader and 20lb braid. Good to hear that the videos have helped. Cheers

I would go with a medium action rod and a 4000 reel. I have a Shimano Backbone rod and a Penn 4000 reel.
