I worked at Nordstrom for quite sometime and everything is so true! From the returns and commission goals to the department managers playing favorites and certain rules only applying to certain people. The difference was the store I worked at was very dry. They excepted these huge sale goals every day with no steady steam of customers... and 7 people working at once in one department. I will say it taught me a lot about dealing with very entitled people and was overall a good experience... but it was very frustrating when goals were not met and managers were on top of you about it...especially if it wasn't your fault because there were literally not enough customers.

I worked sales for a mom and pop store, and I found out from a old employee that they would move my commission to other employees. Some people can be so untrusting, big or small companies.

I just had an interview with Chanel yesterday and they kept asking me how I’d feel if a coworker confronts me cause of how competitive it is and if u ask me that’s not a healthy way to live. Fuck corporate jobs for putting people through that hell!

My roommate worked at Holt Renfrew in Canada (a bit like Saks level, only high-end stuff). She had no problem getting customers to buy because she herself loves to buy in general and ended up in credit card debt. so it takes a certain personality to get people to shop luxury products without getting themselves in trouble financially or emotionally.

When I worked at Nordstrom I would know which customers are the shit ones and we would all avoid them. I had no shame ignoring or calling out shady customers. I worked in designer handbags with average prices for bags was 2000. I had no time for BS. And don’t even get me started with credit card fraud!

I started as a seasonal hire in sales at nordstrom but I wasnt aggressive enough and didnt meet any of my goals so they transferred me to a support role and gave me a raise so I stayed with the store for a few years but the drama between the sales people was toooooo much even tho I wasnt even on commission anymore it was still so much drama lol I worked as support in special occasion dresses/collectors and the sales people were so catty. I transferred to a nordstrom rack and now Im an adm so glad I dont have to deal with commission drama anymore.. even customers would feed into it! Many times customers who regularly worked with our instore personal stylist would have a sales person from our department help them for hours and then at checkout ask that we ring it up under the stylists employee number, giving them the credit for our work ! so unfair.

Years ago I started a college program that gave internships to be fashion buyers, but you had to “learn” the business first by working in a retail clothing store. I was not made for sales, I hated what they sold and quit. I quit the school program too and never worked retail again. I had no idea about the cosmetic returns. I always returned things but it was legit because it wasn’t right..then I would spend more than original purchase lol. Glad you are out of there.

I loved visiting you at the Chanel counter. Part of the problem of not meeting numbers had to do with subpar products that were being released for a while by Miss Pica. Nothing was really exciting. I think the best product released under her has been the Palette Essentielle. I stopped buying from in-store when you left.

So many things are wrong with this business model. Don’t they realize the customer can buy online and still return things without worrying if a sales associate will take a hit? There has got to be a better way. I would not like that kind of unrelenting pressure of a sales goal hanging over my head, either.

thanks for letting me know about what's like to work at Nordstrom and Chanel. I got some free samples from Chanel (Le Lift range) from their anniversary celebration last year and bought a makeup brush. Then I looked at the prices of Le Lift and it's shockingly high. I love the stuff I tested though so when I make more money down the road, I will splurge on a bottle. before that, I don't buy any luxury skincare at Chanel prices (Caudalie is the max I pay for and I order from Europe where it's cheaper than Sephora). I worked in an environmental testing lab and it's the same... management will ask you every day about your daily numbers and be on my back on how to improve production. i think it's hard to escape metrics now but just find a job that is suitable for your personality. I worked in finance, too, and it wasn't that easy either. (11 hour days and tight deadlines for cranking out reports) and I worked as finance career trainer...slightly better but I feel tired of training Muslim women to be financially savvy. I can deal with training North American women but Muslim women are ultra-conservative. maybe work for a company like The Ordinary (from Canada) or some reasonably-priced, ethical brands where you feel you can push customers to buy without hurting their finances. and their products are good, too.

I understand the return policy for problematic goods but ok it is great for the customer to pick up a blush, use it at home and then return it because they found something else. I hear it a lot from KZreadrs, this returning policy. We don't have it here in Greece, of course, no surprise there but I remember once, I bought a Clinique DDML with a pump which didn't work. I took it back the next day, I wasn't refunded or given another one in exchange. No, nothing, they said oh sorry but are you sure you didn't do anything to break it? I said, da it is not broken in any way, it just doesn't work. So this policy can work but I am definitely sure people take advantage of it a lot. And the double dipping? I am talking about our Chanel counters here in two stores that I visit, they never ever threw away a reusable. I couldn't imagine things being like that at Nordstom. Awful situation for people working there. Good thing you left. Not worth the sacrifice of your social life and peace of mind for gratis.

I worked at Nordstrom for about seven years. I worked at four different stores; two smaller and two massive ones. My last job was a regional position, the next stop was going to be the buying office. Your point about bigger stores having more drama is both true and not true. Bigger stores just have a lot going on at all times, and more employees, customers, etc, so there's just a lot more moving parts. I never worked in Cosmetics, but I had to MIC (manager in charge) and deal with that department enough over the years to confirm that Cosmo was the highest drama department in every store. But don't get me wrong: smaller stores pound for pound carried their weight in drama as well. Since the stores have less employees, everyone was in everyone's business and if you sneezed on the first floor they'd hear about it on two within a few minutes. I really appreciate your points here, but I have to say the most stressful job I had there was my second assistant manager role, and both of my department manager roles. If you can believe it, they changed a lot to make the employee experience better for salespeople over the years, at the extreme cost of putting much larger burdens on department managers. For seven years, I had no holidays with friends and family, and I had basically no summer, especially once I got into management. Even though Anniversary would start in the middle of July, Anniversary prep and product arrangement and meetings and incessant phone calls with the buyers and product arrive would start in June. Holiday would basically start in late October. There were also way too many events: Triple Points, Double Points, Half Yearly, trunk shows, personal appearances, Trend Cosmetic Show (honestly one of the worst days for even folks who didn't work in Cosmo); I could go on and on. When it came down to it, you basically had most of the year blocked out and had to harass your teams to constantly be reaching out. And during manager meetings, store managers would have you report your department totals for appointments and presale for events in front of everyone. Or, in my last department level position, have a shared spreadsheet with the rest of the store you were expected to update daily and the store manager would send screenshots out every few days with some departments in green that reported higher appointments and presale, and departments in red who needed to improve. It was a constant barrage. A hamster wheel you could never get off. In my last year there, I realized that there wasn't an option beyond moving to Seattle, and I was starting to doubt the health and viability of the company. They really insulate you in leadership there, and make you feel like there is no life or potential outside of Nordstrom. It was almost cult like. And they indoctrinate manipulative tactics to strong arm you into bothering your customers. Your point about not wanting to bother your customers constantly throughout the year? I would have coached you and said "It's not fair for the customer for YOU to choose FOR them to not know about Trend Show in two weeks." It's honestly pretty gross. I think for you to have a long career there you have to have pretty low self esteem. I quit years before the pandemic, I could only imagine how miserable it must have been dealing with working there in 2020/2021. The vast majority of customers were great, but the wretched and foul ones really do stand out terribly. I never would have wanted to deal with the general public when the societal temperature was so high. I'm really grateful for the skills I picked up working there, but the biggest one was learning how to say no to an employer. I felt like I was exiting an abusive relationship when I finally left. There were so many "what was I thinking?" moments there, and I honestly don't know how I was able to survive what eight different roles in three states with that company put me through. Quitting was one of the best decisions of my life. Life on the outside is so much better.

I laughed at their "proposal" and left mid interview.I think a better job would be Leasing not Sales Consultant on a property site or ANY other Luxury retail position.Hope this helps.

I worked in retail many years ago at a cosmetics counter. A lot is the same. One thing even worse was if a customer had a return without a receipt we all had to eat it, so if we got a $500 return and we had a total of 5 people that worked the counter, we each got hit with a $100 return. Also, often customers purchased items at a different store and then returned them without a receipt at our store. So it was never our sale, but we all talk ok the hit. In the end even if a customer brought it back at another store with a receipt, we always took the hit because it traced back to our sales ID. The part about not getting to have a super large sale is nuts. I don’t get that at all. It sounds like a socialist system. I also hated having to pester people by calling them.
