I just gained immense respect for Spike Lee. It's good to know someone with as big name recognition as him is sticking it to Hollywood and going directly to who matters- the consumers/ audience/ base.

As an up and coming filmmaker, Spike Lee is doing more help than harm to Kickstarter and other filmmakers. I can't tell you how many times a film comes up short of their goal simply because the artist couldn't get enough people to back it. This exposes Kickstarter to the masses and hopefully gets people to help artists. Critics who say Lee is taking money from other artists don't understand how Kickstarter works. A person can donate to whatever project they want to.

Exactly. In actuality this Kickstarter is a broader version of what Spike has had to do in his career. He got funds from family, friends and others to produce "She's Gotta Have It". Then years later he got funds from Oprah, Magic Johnson, Bill Cosby, Michael Jordan to name a few so he could complete "Malcolm X".

So let me get this straight. It's a problem when a famous director ask for funding from his audience, but it's not a problem when a famous director ask for LOANS from big companies such as Universal, Paramount, and Interscope? I totally understand his frustration, especially since she kept cutting him off. Spike Lee has been 'doing the right thing' for years. (pun intended)

Honestly, I would hate to be in her position, but she did really underplay the man's directorial career. "Why are you on Kickstarter?" is a pretty limp question for an entertainment reporter to ask a celebrity in 2013. It's just a natural extension of what filmmakers have done for decades. I am not saying that I have never disagreed w/ Mr. Lee, but let's not express so much damn negativity about the man over nothing.

The thing that concerns some people and I is that many of us are not getting enough backers on to our independent projects but people are quick to back a celebrity on their project. With some much money that they have they can fund their own projects and even back us independent artists but they are not. That's what the whole issue is now with kick starter and indiegogo

It IS true what he says, about being Kickstarter before there was a Kickstarter. He raised money independently for his first couple of films; when Warner Bros. shut down "Malcolm X" midway through production, he went around and raised the rest of the moeny through donors and finished the film; and he financed "Get on the Bus" completely through 22 donors. This is nothing new to him. And, yes, he's not taking away from anyone on there. People won't know those people exist. But because he has a Kickstarter and he is famous, people come there, and THEN they may notice other little guys' Kickstarters. He's right, he's bringing people in.

I'm on Spike's side on this one. He's not being egotistic in this interview at all. I found this to be a very interesting interview as he explained how the hollywood system has changed. I'm a fan of Spike's film but not of his often annoying public behavior. I respect the man for standing his ground and refuting the aggressive opening of the segment. Unfortunately, controversy and scandalous openings and unfair biased media coverage have become a norm for media at the expense of the guest where they are often portrayed as "guilty" or a "villain" of something sorts and left to defend themselves. (this is often disguised as backhanded compliments) Kudos to Spike! She had one point to make "Why go to Kickstarter?" and he explained himself logically and clearly,

The great thing about Kickstarter is that it takes the power away from the traditional funders of movies who tend to screw over directors big and small. In this case Spike Lee retains his power by going to the common person. I say, let him.

Independent filmmaker my ASS. What indie filmmaker begs for $30,000,000 to do a shitty remake of a classic film? Shane Carruth directed/wrote/produced/composed/shot/funded/etc. both Primer and Upstream Color. Primer, now one of the most well known indie films of the last decade cost $7,000. Upstream Color, a brilliant and beautiful film far better than any garbage Spike Lee has done is rumored to have had a budget well under $100,000. THAT is indie filmmaking. Not mansions in Beverly Hills with fountains and a fortune of $40,000,000+, not counting the money he got from Kickstarter.

Stop talking about film? Funny, I think I have more of a right to talk about film, considering I'm receiving a Bachelor's degree in film production/studies and I actually understand how the industry works and how cash flow within the film world works. I'm not toting my education, I'm just saying I know what I'm talking about. And in my honest opinion I think Upstream Color and Carruth are 10,000 buggering times better than Lee, the fraud. And Steven Soderbergh was the one who spearheaded the indie film burst in the 90s with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," not Lee. Lee simply tagged along in Soderbergh's shadow, using the race card over and over again. I'm not denying that Malcom X and Do The Right Thing are great films, I'm denying Lee the right to call himself an indie filmmaker when he begs for money on Kickstarter to create a massive, bloated budget to make a film that should cost half of what his goal was set at, and then get a pathetic return on his failed film. Another thing, Lee is worth $40+ million, has a mansion in hollywood with a fucking fountain out front, and yet he begs for money because "putting my own money in my film is ludacris." He's a self-righteous, entitled bastard who's entire demeanor drips with "I'm Spike Lee, I'm fucking awesome, you should pay for my film because I'm awesome enough to give them to you. By the way, I'm just taking your money and putting out a shit film to make it look like I'm doing something. Bye now!" He used to fight "the man," now he IS "the man."

You do know he was only asking for $1.25 million dollars, right? And you mentioned "Sex, Lies, and Videotapes", a film that premiere at the same time as "Do The Right Thing" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989, so I'm pretty sure Spike Lee and Steven Soderberg spearheaded this movement together. And Soderberg has publicly stated that he thinks "Do The Right Thing" was the better movie. One last thing; since you were so eager to mention your bachelor's degree in film, I think the number one lesson that any filmmaker with a camera and a sack of bananas has learned or been taught (or any film professor would teach) at any point in his life is this: NEVER Self-finance. It's not a good investment and it's too stressful on the filmmaker himself. So yeah, I think your argument is a bit misguided.

I don't know what you're mentioning colour for, but man, I'm all for what Spike Lee is doing. Eternal kudos to him for standing up and being the voice of reason on a talk show - something terribly rare. His intelligence and his fluency of vocabulary commands respect. Really love the way he's actually being a pioneer in this sense. Reinventing the whole ballgame. Stoked. Just stoked.

I thought what he said at the end was pretty funny. "Since 1989 I've given away 300k to students through the spike lee production fund." Wooooooooow... really? A whole 300k? So in the past 20 years he's given each kid that's gone through the Spike Lee Production Fund a couple of dollars? That's mighty generous of him. *rolls eyes*

Spike Lee is a prickly character.. almost like the Kanye of directors, but he's not as egotistical as Kanye, but not like Kanye in the sense that he doesn't demand to be loved the way Kanye does. I respect that about him. As a black man in Hollywood, he doesn't seek to live up to the stereotypical image of black people that Hollywood betrays, nor does he suck up to anyone.. He's just not always the most diplomatic guy.. but the black community needs that. There are plenty of yes men, plenty of good cops in Hollywood, he's the necessary bad cop. He survives on his intelligence and his enormous talent.

Spike Lee should not have to raise funds for his projects. PERIOD. In any case, Kickstarter is a space for artists with an established base, much more so than for young start-up filmmakers or musicians whose kickstarter bids look more like lottery tickets than serious attempts to get work made.

My whole issue is... Spike Lee is right, movies get funded from outside sources, I have no problem with him crowd funding, if people want to put money towards the project, fine. But he could have defended himself in a little bit more of a mature, intellectual manner. I'm tired of these "older people" being so bitter about how things aren't "how they used to be" I'm not that young myself, but I've accepted that things change and keep a happy attitude no matter how much I "disagree". I feel the same about where culture has/is going, but it doesn't mean I should be pissed off about it all the time. Spike Lee is alway pissed off. People need to let things go.

I am an Independent UK film maker, and Spike Lee is bang on! Times have changed, and it is very difficult to raise money through studios, and even if you do they want to control Y. The reporter was out of line with her comments, but I could see she felt embarrassed, but she should have researched more about Spike before jumping. He's done a lot for new film directors. He's a legend, and proved you can defy the odds within our difficult business making films with small amounts of cash. In-fact, I applaud him, as I have worked the same way to get films made, and unless yve experienced it you'll never know! Ytube "The Estate film" I made it for £20000!
