I’ve that 4014 has a non standard whistle, it apparently got modified a while back to sound different.

I think UP 4014 stole 844’s whistle, because it’s original one was swapped with 4014’s somewhere along the line.

I love this! Only in recent years have I learned that 4014 passed by my house once in 2019, still can't belive Union Pacific is bringing back their steam kings from the dead!

This makes me even more excited for when 4014 gets to meet face to face with 3985 when the challenger is restored

I was there for that. The horn salutes 844 and 4014 did were awesome. That one was really memorable.

You always can tell when Ed blows the whistle nobody can do it like him!!!! Both are awesome tho, only one that's missing is 3985!!!!!

Ah yes, the smol big boy(I don't think we will see 3985 actually blowing a whistle under steam, since it already got retired from excursion service in 2020. It's still on static display tho).

If you ask me both these majestic steam engines have good whistles. 844 sounds more smooth and elegant while 4014 sounds deeper and more aggressive

I couldn't decide who won that sound off. Both where extremely loud!! Although 4014's sounds meaner, it has a growl to it that 844's doesn't.

Given that they both run at 300PSI and both use the same whistle (Hancock Long-bell 3 chime), I thought their whistles would sound the same. Was very surprised to see they don't!

@@tankthehedgehog105 because the big heavy machines had to warn everybody to get out of the way if they did not want to get rammed to death. Once upon a time, you could hear the whistles’ echo far away in the distance. A sound that still seems to echo in our distant memories.

I would love to see 4014 and cp 2816 do a whistle battle together since they're both touring this year.

Crazy to think the whistle we're hearing on 844 is the one 4014 originally wore in service back I the 40s and 50s. That whistle sounds so much better on 4014, not sure why. Maybe it's that union pacific Hancock 3 chime roar

@@justincollins8266 the whistle 4014 had on when she returned to service was a brand new old stock whistle. It also sounds like 844's original whistle which wore out years ago. 3985 still has her original whistle I think so does 5511 as she hasn't run since the 1950s so we shall see.

3985’s whistle was taken off and put on 844 before the FEF-3 went to rail fest 2011 to get 4014’s whistle

844: Displays an impressive whistle blow. 4014: Let me show you how it's done, kid. (Proceeds to outdo 844.)
