@@ThePatxiao I came to say this. Peter has a rough life and it would be very easy to use that as justification to go evil. I always kind of thought that was part of the point of Spider-Man. He had Uncle Ben and that turned what could have otherwise been a morally questionable guy with super powers into your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

The Daredevil issue you were referring to was #1. Page 14. He's making his first outfit. He admits to being no "Betsy Ross" but says he should be able to handle it. The next panel he says, "I can even blend the colors for each colored fabric has a different feel to me!"

@@cyberry the colors reflecting different amounts of heat bit is clever and a stretch so far the writer must have practiced yoga. I have no idea what they were thinking with the "pocket chemicals". All of this could have been explained away easily by saying the materials themselves felt different, a different thread count or something, but nooooo... they had to dig deeper and sink lower. I love Daredevil, but sometimes he's written so badly.

I really like this look at Spidey. People forget it but in that original Steve Ditko run, Peter Parker really had a huge ego and a chip on his shoulder even after uncle Ben. He's even played on the idea of doing selfish things with his powers still, the difference is that he sticks to his guns. Throughout the comic, starting with the John Romita Sr run, he actually gained some friends and regular pals and he slowly begins to open up and emotionally mature as he becomes an adult. He really developed as a character, and thats something most movies and TV shows don't really acknowledge.

I hadn't heard of the What If series before and this one sounds great. Jameson's arc was fascinating. Seeing how his arbitrary hatred of Spidey morphs throughout the story was so engaging because it feels so grounded. Seeing someone so invested in the the idea of 'good' bend his morals to take down an evil that doesn't exist works really well for his character. The ending in particular packs a punch. The writers effectively recreated a character defining moment and I would love to see this premise expanded upon.

I was 12 years old when this issue first came out. I was so freaked out by the way Pat Broderick penciled the before/after side by side panels of Peter. The first panel shows us Peter when he was still innocent,... then the next panel is him looking all wild-eyed with long hair, and being the big rich movie mogul! Those two panels have haunted me till this very day... I say that without exaggeration! all of my therapists know the story, because of my telling it to them, lmao! In my late teen years I realized my life was mirroring #19. Those two panels popped up vividly in my mind and I promptly changed my life. To this day I tell this story as a cautionary tale to others who are going down similar paths.

I mean I totally dig this. Acting as a publicist and agent for mutants... he could do a lot of good, recruiting and managing societal fears. Basically becoming the face of superheroes so that people aren’t afraid. The spider-man brand would be really great for most heroes to fall under, and then he manages to put away some crime bosses and exposes media corruption to boot? This version of peter probably did more to combat organized crime and enable other heroes than he ever accomplished by himself as a vigilante, lol.

And I do dig what they did with this story. I do like to think that Peter went on to be the hero Spider-Man with perhaps some alterations. I read this when it first came out. (old guy) Back then I was in awe at this story and how well it meshed with the then existing Marvel universe. But I think there's a reason it was done so well. It came out shortly after a 3 set reprint of the first 21 Amazing Spider-Man episodes, one of the first big (though only on 5x8" format, so not life-sized big, just complete) series reprints to come out. So writers had reason to believe that readers would know the back stories. That may be why this issue was willing to take it to such depth. I loved this issue and recognized What If Issue 19 even after all these years. I think it's the only classic issue that struck me so well that I memorized the number. Still remember most of the panels you showed even after all these years..

I used to envision the Watcher's voice having a majestic cosmic tone, but since the Dark Knight Rises, I can only hear Bane's voice coming out of him... Did many of the What If stories ever feature happier endings that the main continuity? The only one I can think of is the one that introduced Spider-Girl (though that ended the career of Spider-Man, so not perfectly happy I guess). The ones I mainly remember are from the early 90s run where they went the easy route and mostly stuck with alternative stories from major crossover events. Usually almost everybody dies, often at the hands of a corrupted hero. I just discovered your channel a couple days ago, and am quite enjoying my dive into your archive! Keep up the great work!!

Yes as we experts all can tell by the cover that if Spider-Man detained the man and avoided The tragedy of Uncle Ben then he'd have been a full time stunt man like he planned to be.

I adore you. You are awesome! Also I love that your Spider-Man voice is like a Looney toons version of Bugsy Malon. Awesome sauce "Meyah Meyah See"!

I'm glad you liked the story. It was one of my favorites to do--and yes, I really did want to go as far as I could with it.

Ah, the fun we had in The Silver Age! And, JJJ brought it on himself. That part of his charcter flaw never changes, LOL

The original What If? comic run was just fantastic. It took so many of our beloved heroes to some very dark and sometimes weird places. One of my favorites was What if the X-men lost Inferno? which was a really great crossover series in of itself.

Uatu The Watcher.... .the intergalactic Rod Serling. I loved this comic series. 👍😎 Plus, the art in this particular issue looks like the great Steve Dicto's style.

I remember the color thing for DD also, I think it was in one of Kevin Smiths issues... because I'm pretty sure those are the only ones I've read.

The early "What If...?" comics are so wonderful. They were basically Stan Lee doing the Marvel version of "The Twilight Zone", but more zany and meta, and less philosophical. That said, I absolutely adore "What If Doctor Strange Were a Disciple of Dormammu?" which is just absolutely delightful and surprisingly deep.

Stan Lee didn't write a single issue of "What If." "What If" was largely Roy Thomas's brainchild and baby until former Editor-in-Chief and Stan's protege "Roy the Boy" left for DC after a rift with new E-i-C Jim Shooter ca. 1980. This particular issue, though, was written by Peter B. Gillis and edited by Denny O'Neil and Mark Gruenwald. By the late-seventies, Stan's involvement with the comics was quite minimal. He had relocated to California by then and was concentrating on making deals with Hollywood studios to option Marvel properties for cartoons, live-action TV series, and films (which often failed to materialize). Stan had largely finished writing comics by 1973.

I didn't mean to imply his literal hand having a part in the stories' creation. What I meant is that the approach was to take Stan Lee's characters and to filter them through the lens of Rod Serling. Stan had finished writing scripts himself for the most part, yes, but he was still the most influential figure in comics and certainly for Marvel at that time. Nowhere is that more evident than in "What If...?", especially in the issues that centre on the characters he co-created with Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby (which is what the first run of the title mostly focuses on). This Spidey issue, the aforementioned issue with Doctor Strange, and issue 11, "What If the Fantastic Four Were the Original Marvel Bullpen?" are a testament to this fact.

This Wat-if reminds me of the "What-If" about Flash Thompson becoming Spider-Man, it goes hard like this one did, I'm also reminded of Spider-Man: Life Story, for some reason.

I would love to hear you comment about the x-men! THey have a lot of hilarious stuff , your humour is amazing i love how you make fun of comics. I casually find myself laughing at comics, like when Jean is in the hospital after the Phoenix thing, and they showed how Wolvie cared too much that he actually bought her flowers but then they all treated him bad and he got mad and throw them away. It was hilarious to me lol
