Why I said Shabba, was because he was the first to be dancehall artist to be immediately recognizable by people outside the Caribbean diaspora community and he consistently released hits. But at the same time there was Tenor saw "ring the alarm", Super Cat had hits, then Shinehead came later. The tri-state as you mentioned played a major part, it's a hub until this day.

@Fitawrari Fitness I actually don't believe that Shaggy was deliberately marketed toward a mainstream audience until after Mr. Boombastic became a big hit. Shaggy had been around making music for years before then. "Oh Carolina" (a dancehall cover of the Folkes Brothers' song) and "Big Up" were both big hits in the Caribbean community and the NYC tri-state area. For better or for worse, Shabba Ranks was lampooned on shows like 'In Living Color' and made songs with Eddie Murphy (not one of my favorites, tbh😂) when Murphy was a bonafide movie star, in the 90s. I had classmates who knew nothing about reggae, going to his concerts and raving about his stage show. People forget how big Shabba was. His duets with Maxi Priest (who was also big back then) were on pop radio (Your Body Can't Lie To Me). Also, Shabba wasn't the first dancehall artist to break through the American market. I once had a stodgy white professor tell me that he loved Yellowman songs. And in terms of Jamaican musical artists, Millie Small and Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff were the earliest. Shabba was the first to win a Grammy and arguably, the first to have such huge commercial success.
