Spice Harvesters | How it works from Dune: Part Two

This video animation explains how the Spice Harvesters work seen from Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two". Two versions were seen: one used by House Harkonnen and one used by House Atreides.

    Of course it wouldn't, but what if it didn't hear it. I think the legs in the harkonnen harvesters didn't completely mute it's presence to the worms, just significantly reduced the area from with the worms could detect it. They still used air support after all

    My question is why is there a square harvester used by the Atredies? In part 1 I was under the impression the Harkonnen left ALL their equipment behind for spice. It was implied in the movie and book that what they left was sabotaged. In part 2 the Harkonnen have their own unique design like a beetle (accurate to the books). I guess I’m asking why is there a square looking harvester at all? Did the Atredies already have a spice harvester design despite only getting access to Arrakis like 3 days before? Am I overthinking this lol

    You’ve got it mixed up. House Harkonnen left almost NONE of their equipment behind, save for a few of old, outdated models. House Atriedes did not have any harvesters of their own and had to make do with what was left. When Harkonnen left, they took the good spice harvesters with them (I believe there’s a shot showing some of them getting airlifted away). In part 2, when House Harkonnen returns to arakkis, they bring all their spice harvesters back again.

    My theory is that he'd gain too much wealth from controlling the spice trade. And too much wealth meant too much power. Power which was already limited by the Landsraad, the congress made up by the great houses, meant to check on the Emperor's influence over space politics. They also probably can't allow two or several other houses to share their ownership of Arrakis due to the constant plotting and wars going on between them all. Peace must be maintained on Arrakis at all cost if they want the spice to keep flowing...

    in the books the harversters of the harkonnen are never described, we only get a descrption when leto goes to watch one in function, and they are described as looking like giant bugs with legs like these, so that's the main inspiration, but Denis really changed it up because he made the advanced version used by the harkonnens similar to what is in the books and since in the books too it happens that the harkonnens leave behind only old and poorly manteind machinery, he made the old machined look different, with this boxy legless design

    Two huge problems I have with dune movies tech. 1. the mining laser beams seem like better weapons than anything else. 2. they have anti gravity tech in there suits. Why not a floating spice harvester? why balloons at all?

  • @danielsong9365

    @danielsong9365

    Ай бұрын

    1. lasguns, when hitting shielded targets, cause a chain reaction equivalent to an atomic weapon. it would destroy the individual/thing wearing the shield and it would also kill the person who fired it. that’s why they’re used sparingly, and the harkonnen guy in the beginning says “no shields!” (also cuz shields make worms mad) 2. not sure too much why they have to be lifted up, but it’s probably something to do with the size. humans are probably fine, but maybe ships/crawlers are too heavy and unstable to be lifted by anti gravity tech (or maybe since it also uses holtzmann technology the vibrations could attract worms as well, similar to shields) so in conclusions, lasguns can blow everything up if shot at a shield, and maybe holtzmann anti gravity thingies attract worms

  • @magonus195

    @magonus195

    Ай бұрын

    Also the real-world reason that there aren't more commercial balloons is that the Hindenburg spooked everyone, even though balloons are comparatively _very_ energy-efficient aircraft. Unfortunately, helium (not hydrogen) is the best chemical to use for giant flying balloons, and the US monopolized it at the time of the Hindenburg, and still produces a majority to this day. There's probably some artificial reasons, like the oil industry. "If X exists, why don't all use X?" is as silly a question, as asking you yourself don't have 10 PHDs, since the internet exists.

    In the Dune universe Spice is a halucinagetic drug-like chemical that enables some human psychic abilities and extendeds human life. It is only found in the sand of the desert planet of Arakis.
