Spherical Perspective Tutorial 1: The Sliding Grid Method for Equirectangular Spherical Perspective

A neat "trick" I created for equirectangular perspective sketching:
-The usual fixed grid method allows you to draw horizontals and verticals going to the 4 cardinal points.
-The "sliding grid" method I show you here allows you to draw any line, given two points. I'll show you how to do it in this video. For why it works check out the paper where I introduced this method:
www.univ-ab.pt/...
note: this perspective is also sometimes called curvilinear perspective, 6-point perspective, or spherical perspective. In fact there are many spherical perspectives, and this is the "equirectangular spherical perspective", a specific type of spherical perspective. One of these days we will talks about the other types.

This just blew my mind! I'm an engineer but we never learned hand drafting just CAD. I recently started to take some art classes including perspective drawing. I really want to try this now! Cheers! 🍻

Thank you Kate! Do let me know about the results. I always get a kick from knowing I am spreading the practice. About "just CAD": the urban sketchers group has a lot of architects that come there as refugees of "just CAD" or "just BIM", and engineers also feel this need. Computers are of course fine tools but schools forgot that handmade drawing is a mode of thinking, so you don't want to have the computer do it for you all the time, no matter how efficient it is, for the same reason you wouldn't want another person to think for you even if that person was smarter than you. We feel great when we draw because we are stretching a mental muscle we forgot we had. :)

My pleasure, Doc. I'll be adding more as soon as my schedule allows. Meanwhile you can try my papers, but they are a bit heavy in maths. This video is a first attempt at spreading the kind of thing I've been doing in workshops since 2015 or so. The workshops can only reach so many people, of course; I think lots more will profit from the videos.

Thank you! :) I have planned on making such a series since at least 2015, but I've been always too busy and frankly I feel I kind of suck at making videos, compared to live lecturing. It takes me a long time to make a video and I feel I still sound weird in the end. But the fact is that videos can reach so many people that can't come to my lectures, and messages like yours make me feel like trying it again. So I'll give it a shot as soon as I can. :) There's a lot I want to share that isn't written on my published papers.

@@maherco61 I considered that, but then it tends to get too long, without the engagement of looking people in the eye to keep them awake. Then again people seem to be patient enough to listen to podcasts that ramble for an hour or more (I certainly do). I might try that, it would certainly be a lot easier for me.

"Euclid would be proud." That is a very perceptive comment, as it took me a while to realize that my work is in a sense a redux of Euclid. Not of his famous Elements, of course, but of his smaller and very misunderstood book, the Optics. And I do dare to hope that he would like it. :) So, thank you!

As for the dub, I thought of doing one, but first things first: I have a bunch of videos waiting to come out, and I have to gather wisely the little specks of free time that I manage to scrape from classes, family, and the endless academic bureaucracy...
