Spell Slinger Tasset | Make Leather Thigh Armor

Today we learn to make leather thigh armor with this SPELL SLINGER's TASSET!
This tasset is DOPE! It is basically leather thigh armor with slots to hold vials full of poison, healing potions....snacks. You're the mage, you decide!
These were inspired by a business called Dracolite! Check them out here!

Suggestion: War Mage bracers with similarly styled slots for common spell components. Like a built in amber rod, a silver pastille flip top box for bat guano and Sulfur (I mean what self-respecting wizard doesn't cast Fireball?!), a tiny inkwell and steel nib pen (every mage has to write in a spellbook, right?).

When you get ready to tool your leather, back the peace with clear packing tape. try to find a tape that that is both sturdy & can be easily removed, &/or that doesn't leave a lot of its adhesive behind. doing this will keep the structure of the leather intact as you tool it, helping prevent the leather from that concave warping you encountered.

I love this project you did I have a suggestion though just add a little visual conformity It popped into my head that maybe the permanent straps and the potion in spirits pockets that you made could have transferred the panel design through the loops and the spirits pockets that way there's no break in the lines because actually I thought the lines would kind of camouflage the fact that you have those spirits and keep the visual of that beautiful of design he made not have any break The bottles themselves that protrude would give it an added feature without having to break that pattern design like I said it's just a suggestion maybe for future projects you could incorporate that or I could be just talking out my butt too who knows thanks for reading😀👍

  • @PatrickCordaneReeves

Dip dyeing your leather makes it stiff because you're using an alcohol-based dye. Alcohol penetrates really well and helps get the coverage even, but it also evaporates quickly and seems to pull the natural oils out of the leather. If you dip the piece, that's a LOT of alcohol going into it, so it basically pulls it all out and leaves you with hardened leather (a good thing if that's what you're going for). If you do want to dip it anyway, and you want to keep it supple, think about using a water based dye and/or hit it with some oil after the dye sets in. Note: do NOT add oil before using a water dye, because the dye won't take well (oil and water, after all). Another tip: never mix dye mediums. If you, say, run out of black alcohol-based dye, don't try to finish the project with a black water-base. It'll never match right.

You get the shene because it's taking on dye that settles at the surface instead of completely absorbing. If you buff it with a leather conditioner after it gets rid of the "shene".

you know what would be next level (and which I'm now considering) is to have some way of lighting up the vials and having a method of disturbing the fluid which contains reflective particles. The idea is to convey the idea that these are active potions. by going to larger vials, It could definitely be an attention-getter. I'm trying to do things like this for my wizard garb. Would love to get a hold of compact smoke machine at some point.

dip dyeing definitely stiffens up the leather as you fill in gaps with dye, but you can bend and stretch the leather back and forth after dyeing to give it some of that flexibility back. That patina from the dye can be prevented by cleaning off excess dye while drying and avoiding too many coats, but if it does happen a bit of alcohol on a rag will rub it right off. I like the rings and belts to add versatility, I'll probably do that with my own tassets.

You could also try slightly angling your beveller while stamping and just follow the head of tool. If your leather isn't too wet that should also help with the dimpling and still leave a crisp outline that is if you don't want the rounded edge like you did on your design in this project.

If your leather gets hard after dying use saddle soap. Apply to both sides with a cloth in a circler motion, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, don't rub it in right a way but let it "soak" into the leather. now that it has had a few minutes to "soak in rub it in till you can no longer see any saddle soap (Leder Fett for those in in Germany and other countries that speak German) anymore. Wait over night or so before using the piece. Do a test bend to see if it is supple enough for you. If it is still too stiff wait 24 hours and check again, if still too stiff warm the leather with a hair dryer on low, making sure to constantly move it around the piece. Once nice and warm to the touch, not so hot you cant pick it up and hold it comfortably for 10 to 20 seconds, rub in more saddle soap like the first step and wait till the leather is back to normal temp then rub it in completely. Now slowly and lightly start bending it back and forth increasing the degree of the curve every few bends, 5 to 10. It should be supple enough after 5 mins. if not then the dye has penetrated way too deep and the leather may be beyond repair. Side note: dip dying: only dip the leather in for 5 second max and wiping away any excess dye as soon as possible so it doesn't saturate the leather.

  • @kay9520
    @kay9520 Жыл бұрын

when the leather returns to the "color", touch it to your cheek, if it feels cool, it is just right for the moisture to give a good burnishing (dark impression) when beveling or tooling.

I can't wait to see one for the other leg that holds a scroll or has a built-in holster for a wand! also, you might want to get an electric slicker, it saves so much time doing the edges and gets a really smooth finish. A cool upgrade would be a pictograph on each vial holder to act as a label for what goes there, as well as breaking up the solid black of the leather there.

Another trick with the beveler stamp, as long as it's got a smooth surface and not a checkered one, is to simply drag it into the beveled line once you're finished hammering. That way you'll smooth down any marks left by the hammering. Also, when transferring a pattern, I just use normal paper but wrap the leather into cling film! P.S. I'm still waiting for the hood pattern! I'm a lazy guy when it comes to pattern making, so please... release all of your patterns 😂

Are you cleaning your leather with resolene first? This cleans the leather and helps absorbption during dip dye to prevent that sheen. Some dyes have "metal" powders in them which sometimes oxodizes on the surface as well is the dye is old or the leather not clean. I am no expert either, if I am wrong someone can correct me. My purple alcohol based dyes have that sheen when I don't clean the leather with resolene first.

Dip dye question: what kind of dye are you using and how fast are you passing the piece through the dye? Alcohol dye like fiebings pro dyes will dry out your leather if you completely submerge the piece slowly. If dipping in that kind of dye, do it in a controlled quick manner so as not to allow the leather to soak up the alcohol and only allow the piece to pick up the color.

You can also use a light coat of neats foot oil before you dye. It will help the leather soak up the dye and keep the leather from getting to stiff.

the problem using bee's wax is that when you are in a hot area you have a chance of the wax staining any clothing that touches it ... one reason i will never wax harden any of my leather.

One of the tricks I used for what you call wax leaching would be to spray the items that you have already waxed with good strong hairspray and that kind of seals the wax from any other clothing when your body heat gets warmer or the temperature of the other side environment is warmer and you just reapply the hairspray after you remove garments and put it up for storage
