Spektrum Sky Remote ID Module

Ғылым және технология

It finally arrived! We unbox and test the latest Remote ID from Spektrum and try out the Telemetry functions with the Radiomaster TX16S and a Spektrum NX6. All tests were done with AR631 receivers.
For those curious, the unit draws 119 mA @ 5 V input after satellites are acquired. During acquisition, it fluctuates between 99-120mA due to the LED flashing.

Just got mine last week too. I ordered it the day they offered it. I haven't opened it yet and am saving it for when I need RID in a larger plane. Right now, none of my planes weigh enough to require it. I originally ordered it for putting on one of my larger drones with a battery attached. Since it wasn't in, I ordered the HolyStone since it was self-contained for that drone. That bound really well and works great. Hope the FAA allows it to remain on the DOC list.

Just curious about your holy stone...have you ever looked at the altitude info? I got one and it always shows about 0 M (sometimes .5 m) even when I'm 50 feet in the air. I watched lots of review videos and found one where someone actually showed what it was reporting and although he didn't make a big deal about it it also showed incorrect altitude. Do you have that issue?

Odds are the FAA will never see any of your data except when you register it. The unit only transmits a few hundred feet in the flight area. As long as you aren't flying where you shouldn't nobody will ever monitor you. I love the telemetry, very useful! Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Agree, as I mentioned in the video, main motivation for someone to buy this unit over a dedicated RID module, is you can take advantage of some additional telemetry. Working on more videos on it demonstrating some cool ways to use the data and testing more functions. Also have been working with the EdgeTX developers to integrate some SkyID functions directly into EdgeTX. I'll share more info as things are released!

To each their own if pilots decide to comply or not with the FAA regulations. I look at this way… how much does an attorney cost if you have an accident on a non- AMA flying field and you are not legally in compliance to fly your drone? Do you think your AMA membership insurance or other type of insurance will cover you if you have an accident but are not legally in compliance to fly the sUAV? A piece of mind is worth the cost to me! Thank you again for posting the video.

Hi Shane. Thanks for your instructional videos on the SkyID. Is there an initial setup that it needs to get it to report the correct altitude height? I found that mine will display “30 feet” of height when on the ground, but as soon as I take off, the altitude reports are “19,000+” feet! I have in on my Gentle Lady glider with an AR630 receiver. My Transmitter is a DX6, and was updated to the latest firmware. Have you experienced this “faulty altitude” issue?

I didn't have to calibrate but I have found that it takes a while to stabilize at what I think is the correct altitude. So far I can only see actual altitude over sea level since I'm using my Radiomaster TX16S. I used it in a recent prop test flight video to measure time to climb and I had to let it sit on the ground for 5 minutes or more to stabilize before I could take off in order to get accurate results.

It was featured in my recent Spektrum AR631 range test video. Planning more videos with the Zorro. In my opinion the Radiomaster radios are awesome and I love the open source and active development community. Some folks have issues with them but I see people having issues with all manufacturers products. In my personal experience the radios have been awesome. The R88 receivers have worked well for me but range is on the lower end as demonstrated in my range video. Fine for line of sight but much less range than Spektrum receivers in my testing.

I will assume you have the latest Forward Programming LUA scripts installed on your TX16S? v0.56 is the latest, but v0.55 is fine at the moment. I have a series of videos dedicated to acquiring and installing the necessary software, unlocking the Spektrum AR receivers, and resetting/reprogramming them from scratch. The AR637TA I presume came in a BNF airplane (if it didn't it would be an AR637T)? Depending on which plane and what firmware it has on it Spektrum may have it locked so you cannot access those settings via Forward Programming, even with a Spektrum transmitter. For example, in my Turbo Timber Evolution, the stock AR637TA will only allow you to change the f-mode channel and edit each mode whether it has safe, as3x, or no gyro. If this is the case you will need to update the firmware and reset it following the instructions in the videos mentioned above on my channel as you cannot alter any deeper settings such as gyro gains.

Sir,What I wanted to explain hear,is that the FAA regulation required a remote ID module that not only broadcasts the location of your model, but also the location of the ground station, which is us flying our models with our transmitter. This is the biggest problem with the new FAA remote ID regulations. It could be a dangerous thing.Thats what I'm talking about. If you like the added telemetry, that's fine,me personally,I don't have time for that.My plane flys fast and the flight is over in 5 minutes. This is really what I meant. If you like it,that's fine, but not me.I have enough to deal with in everyday life.

I hear you and share some of the same opinions. I am far from a proponent for RID but as I previously said, your information is inaccurate. This device does not transmit the operators location. Many KZreadrs spreading false info, perhaps not intentionally, but trying to capitalize on the hype for views before getting all the facts. True there are some models that have integral RID modules like DJI that do that but not across the board. This one is not one of those devices and all are not required to display that info.

All data works with the Karen apps even without registering. Registering only links the data it sends out to you. My module only puts out partial data to the rx (no speed or altitude) and my frame losses go up by a factor of 10x along with 1-2 holds on flights. Andy Kunz has a crew working on it but I've not heard a word in several weeks. He said there's nothing he can share. Pay attention to your frame/fade/hold data before and after using this. Andy said some work, some don't.

Yes, the telemetry data I was referring to was just to the transmitter. I understand the "Karen" app data is independent. I'll definitely keep an eye on the frame losses and holds with and without it. I can see how that could be an issue with all the additional data being sent. I have been working with one of the EdgeTX developers sharing data on this device. Already found one bug in the GPS coordinate translation that will be fixed in a future version of EdgeTX.

Here's the FAA link. faadronezone-access.faa.gov/#/ Also, get the "TRUST" certificate. You go through a simple test on safety and you get a certificate. It's free and should you ever get hassled its nice to have the FAA documents and TRUST certificate to tell "Karen" to have a nice day but you are authorized (as long as you aren't flying where you shouldn't of course, haha). What port on the flight controller did you plug it in to? It must be on a "Smart" port such as the Smart ESC port 6 or an SRXL2 port. Problem with the SRXL2 port is the receiver on that is also connected to an SRXL2 port, are there two SRXL2 ports on that flight controller? Even if there is the manual states "if a remote receiver and Sky ID are both connected to SRXL2 ports the Sky ID won't transmit telemetry". Does your plane have a Smart ESC connected to servo port 6? If not, I would try that port. One thing on the radio that you might need to do is have the model bound to the TX and go into the telemetry list on the radio and clear them, then re-discover all new ones. On my NX6 when trying to use the Sky ID with an AR637 I was only getting GPS coordinates back from the Sky ID. No altitude or speed. I fixed it by clearing the telemetry list and refreshing/re-discovering them. Just adding a new one didn't make it work.

@@we4fm175 Port 6 with a Y cable should work though I haven't tested it. Manual says you can do that. Has to be a Smart enabled port to get the telemetry data. All the other ports will just give it power and the signal pin is only an output unless it's a smart port. For the telemetry refresh, be sure to Delete All, then do the Auto-Config. Hi Bob. First, what receiver are you using it with? For the telemetry to work it must be connected to an XBUS or SRXL2 port. On an AR631 like I used in this video this would be the bind port or port 1. Any other port, 2-6 you plug it in to you won't get telemetry. To use it on port 1 (throttle) you need to have a "Smart" Avian ESC to use the ESC and the SkyID on a Y cable. If you put a normal ESC and the SKYId on a Y on port/ch1 the ESC will not arm. If you use port 2-6 you will only power up the SkyID and it will transmit to a Remote ID app but not via telemetry to your transmitter.
