Omg - I miss speedway so much. Thanks for uploading this. I was a late starter to speedway; in the early 1980s my ex dragged me kicking and screaming to Plough Lane for the first time and neither he nor I anticipated that I would fall in love with speedway in the first 10 minutes. It was the first and only spectator sport that I cared about. RIP Simmo - you were a bloody star.

Thank you so much for bringing back my childhood memories. Was a Belle Vue aces fan from the early 80s and although I loved the old Hyde Road track . I just loved the racing at the Shay track of the Halifax Dukes with its wall of death bends .

Fond memories of all these brave hero’s. My own favorites Frank Aufrett and Bernie Persson personified everything about the sport, brave, tenacious, fearless entertainers who were dreadfully underrated and largely ignored by mainstream media and TV, particularly BBC who’d rather give bucket loads of air time to timid boring sports like Tennis and golf.

Brilliant stuff. This was when British speedway was the elite league in the world. Before all the top stars went to Poland and Sweden first, you saw them all racing for British clubs. Come on British promoters, sort yourselves out and do something to make the Elite League a true league of the elite riders. At the moment it doesn't attract most of the best riders in the world. So very very sad.

I say bring back speedway everywhere. Only it's not going to happen. My local team was the Wimbledon Dons. Their ground, Plough Lane, is now a block of flats. I'd like to see the council try that at the other end of Wimbledon, ie, where the tennis courts are. Speedway was the most fun sport - lots of excitement with no dramas, no punch-ups, no police needed obviously not sexy enough.

These were all well worth watching again, but does anybody have decent quality action shots of the brigade that visited Glasgow White City every week before a league was set up (late 1940s to early 1950s}. It included giants of the time like Bill Kitchen, Ron Johnstone, Eric Chitty, Jack Hodgson and leg trailer Oliver Hart

Fantastic video, certainly brought back a lot of happy memories!. I'm trying to track down footage of the Ivan Mauger/Peter Collins best of 3 races which took place at Ellesmere Port. I was on the back of Peter's bike when they were introduced to the crowd for 3 laps which was great - any idea where I could find this please?

I totally agree. What's happening to the British Speedway? I know it's changed dramatically since the 1990s. The Polish and Swedish people also love the sport. However, so many of our clubs have closed down. Councils have proposed new plans for building small retail outlets/shops and property. I hardly hear about Speedway on television today. I do see the Swedish speedway on TV, free channel on freeview. I believe the promoters should review the situation for the nation. We seen to have plenty of time for Woman's ⚽️/🏈

Can you just clarify that you are, or are not, blaming women for the decline of speedway? Seriously? IMHO, if anyone is to blame for the death of this fabulous sport it is the inept management. And none of them were women as far as I know.

I think Ivan Mauger chose to compete in the UK and the British fans loved him. I don't think speedway was a thing in his home country of New Zealand, anymore than it was in Australia.
