Weird to think that only 1,700 people have seen this video. It's fantastic! I'm glad to be one of the lucky few.

honestly an adding machine stream would be really fun. you could have people donate to insert numbers into your queue or otherwise change the arithmetic you're doing. do a mix of problems so that you can show off different machines, etc.

i don't think it'd bring in big numbers but it would be a fun community stream if you've got some friends to hang out in chat with

if u were a really big twitch streamer that gets a lotta donations you could have a bit in a special stream where you have a guy in a corner constantly adding up the donations like in a telethon

Assuming this was also sold in Japan under a different brand, the "numbers only up to five" thing was probably extremely intuitive to a generation raised on Japanese abaci

Are used to work in the design department at a grammar school. If I had one of these I think I would have to have removed the mechanism as you did and make a transparent Perspex case for it as an example of complex mechanisms.

Finally got myself one of these. Alas, one set of keys sticks, so I’ll be taking advantage of the ease of disassembly.

Simulating this with an ortholinear keyboard and some code could be a fun experiment. Representing large numbers with "chords" instead of several distinct inputs reminds me of stenography.

Dude, I don't know how long ago the video was but I did watch someone speed run calculators. This would be amazing to have in the irl speedrunning community. I am unsure if you will see this because this video is so old now.

I don't really know anything about irl speedruns, but I would totally do this if you think people would be interested. I no longer have the Speedee Add-A-Matic, but the Comptometer would be better anyways.

@@ChrisStaecker I am absolutely sure people would enjoy, but I recommend looking into different types of speedruns and speedrunning community befor you start. The only irl speenruns I witnessed was the calculator speedrun and the pencil sharpener speed run. (Both of which from Point Crow.)

@@ChrisStaecker You might have to do it like minecraft, with a randomized map/page of questions. The Calculator is just 1+1=2 +1 +1 +1 +1... Till 100 as fast as you can.

So… is there less wear on the 6-9 keys on your other machines, and more on the 1-5?

I have a later variant of that Contex model, and it is very much like this Japanese clone but with a metal casing. It also has square buttons and disassembles in exactly the same way. Its bottom plate does extend underneath the keyboard though. I find it curious that the key levers are made from the same stuff as printed circuit boards.

I love these videos and I'm glad you're still adding to the series. Maybe there are some movies or old tv shows showing a pro using these machines?

  • @ChrisStaecker

I think there may be, but I haven't seen it. The key driven machines seem to have gone out of style around the 1950s, so it would have to be pretty old. I've seen some old Burroughs films with their machines, but it's a different type and I think less skilled than the Comptometer types.
