    Stop comparing sports such as basketball or football to a sport like fencing 😭 the rules applied are completely different, and the history behind each sport is even more widely different. I argue that each and every sport is equally difficult and requires extreme skill at a professional level. YOU ARE WATCHING PROS in the video. Fencing is no exception. Stop beefing it’s not that serious mane

    If you want realistic fencing, do HEMA. Olympic fencing is not meant to represent a realistic duel with real weapons at this point. It is a sport and that's all it wants to and has to be. It is an incredibly fun one at that. I do both HEMA and olympic fencing and the mindset when fencing is completely different and that is ok. If you think of it as games, one is call of duty and the other is ready or not. Both are fun but in different ways and for different reasons. Some like one better than the other and others like them both, but neither is better or worse than the other just because one is closer to realism. If they are both well made and have fun and engaging gameplay, both games can be equally fun regardless of how close to the real thing they are. It's the same with HEMA and Olympic fencing.

  • @grapfen587

    @grapfen587

    18 күн бұрын

    @@user-qx5cn1si1q All of the kinetic energy that is used on bending it will not be transferred onto the tip. Additionally, the bending makes it so the blade is not longer in line with the direction of the stab which makes transferring energy harder. The springy property also causes energy to be transferred much less effectively overall. This is why shorter and very rigid daggers are so effective at getting through things. It is so rigid that the force you put into the stab is almost completely focused on the point and since it stays rigid after impact there is no other way for the energy to go but the direction you are pushing in. Fencing weapons are of course deliberately made to be as ineffective as possible at delivering kinetic energy to the opponent to avoid injury, but if you look at the historical weapons that foils and epees derive from you will see they are all very rigid since they are designed to be actual weapons. For a simple comparison that should make it clear: Imagine you want to push someone away from you with a pole. You have a pool noodle or a wooden pole to choose from. You will pick the wooden staff because you can much more easily transfer energy to the person with it compared to the pool noodle which will just bend and bend without pushing the person at all.

    fencing's a sport. it's arbitrary like any other sport. there seems to be a common idea that fencing has to be like a real fight and accurate to a duel, instead of it's own sporting event. i don't know why you're so hung up on connecting it to a duel. "but this isn't real fencing, this isn't like a fight at all" comments inevitably fail because fencing's a sport dictated by it's own rules now... you wouldn't say "wow basketball isn't like any real life activity at all" because it doesn't have to be. "this isn't real sword fighting" and no one said it was. it's not supposed to and doesn't have to be. it is entirely unbound by the rules of sword fighting. bending the sword like it's a car antenna counts as good fencing because that's what the sport is for. it's not what duels are for, but fencing is not a duel. HEMA exists for a reason. That's supposed to be faithful to history. Fencing is as bound to your idea of a good duel as basketball or football are.

    everytime a fencing video gets slightly popular im so tired of the goobers saying "this is nothing like real swordfighting" ok and?😭 You wouldn't say "track and field is nothing like real running from lions." It's not meant to be a real swordfight, it's an arbitrary sport. just because it's origins are in sword fighting and it has swords in it doesn't mean it's still bound by sword fighting expectations. Y'all see swords in a sport and immediately monkey brain yourselves into thinking "Yep, this is meant to be representative of a duel to the death, and the fact that it isn't realistic is bad." Fencing is about killing your opponent as much as basketball or football or tennis is 😭 stop leaving comments about how something not meant to be realistic isn't realistic

    You're completely wrong, you know. With your basketball and football analogy. The idea behind football is: use your legs, use your team strategy, kick and hit the target. Football fans will never rant about realism because it has nothing tp do with football. While football fans would certainly rant about the game being built around one player while others just defend him and give him the ball. Why? Because the idea of team strategy is betrayed and the team doesn't play. The idea behind fencing is a duel of two people. It's hit+defend combination. And ranting about the defending part disappearing and turning into run and poke is really understandable. I'll repeat it, your comments under every comment here are wrong.

  • @bigtoosh

    @bigtoosh

    11 күн бұрын

    @@user-zj4zz4un5z Football fans will never rant about realism because it has nothing to do with football. The only reason fencing fans rant about fencing is because they're unable to realize Olympic fencing is meaningfully more similar to football than dueling. It's not a martial art anymore, but its own thing, wholly removed from the original. I get what you're saying, that fencing is uniquely held to realism because of it's historical origins, and that removing realism would remove the "idea of fencing." But, there are multiple types of fencing and Olympic as one of them is wholly arbitrary and defines itself. This is why HEMA exists! Saying unrealistic HEMA is bad, is valid, because HEMA aims to present the idea of dueling. But there's no obligation for Olympic Fencing to present the "idea of fencing," though that might be cool or you would like that more. I'm arguing removing the "idea of fencing" is totally excusable for a sport that wants to be it's own thing, and whether you like it or not is a matter of personal opinion and not relevant here. You're saying "but that removes the point of the duel" and I'm saying "removing the point of the duel doesn't matter when the sport isn't for the sake of the duel." Where I think you're getting mixed up is you believe because it's called olympic "FENCING" it still has to be remain faithful to a realistic duel between two people, and when it isn't, that's bad. You should completely forget the word "fencing" in "olympic fencing" as a tie to it's historical origins. Your point that the "idea behind fencing" has disappeared isn't relevant when presenting the "idea behind fencing" isn't the goal of olympic fencing. Because Olympic Fencing is as wrong for not being realistic dueling as football is. You have to accept that criticism which says anything "defeats the point" of it's origin will never be valid when the raison d'etre of said thing existing is NOT to emulate it's origin. and as long as that is true, "but that's nothing like the original idea of fencing at all" will never be a valid critique of something under zero obligation to be like the original idea of fencing at all..
