I have worked in post production creating workflows for streaming sites for 10 years and your description of file codec is one of the best! Plus I love the pacman graphic to describe interfames.
I really like how much you break down and explain the codecs great video thanks!
Really helpful to know this. It explains why I stopped using Premiere due to playback issues! Many thanks!
Thanks. Your channel is one of my favorites for post-production tips, tricks, and tutorials.

I have been subscribed for years now. Great channel to follow.
I always used proxies ..till now I never know this technique...really loved it !
Great as usual. I shoot everything in Sony XAVC. I will begin transcoding everything to MOV422, as per your instructions, since that is the preferred delivery codec for video productions. Keep up the good work.
The amount of videos I scrolled through and finally a video that explains HOW. Thank you!!!
Let me thank you for your great content which helped me a lot in turning my interest in (Video Editing) into a career, even though I'm still in my first steps, but watching you and listening to your directions has made a lot of progress Greetings from Syria .. from the dark side of the world

Thank you, this is so helpful!
Thanks so much for this it has just saved me so much time!
Thanks for this video! I thought I knew a lot about codecs and proxies, but you helped clarify some things. I'm in the process of creating MOV proxies for a lot of MP4 raw 4k files, so it's taking a bit of time... but I know when everything is done, the workflow will be much more efficient!
Huge thanks for the transcode tip. I've been struggling with slow timeline playback and this solved my problem!

Hi Kelsey. I am a documentary filmmaker from Cleveland, Ohio. This is an awesome video and has helped me speed up my editing in Premiere. I subscribed. 😀
Nice😇so useful😍 thanks 🙏🏻
Hello Kelsey. I have to say as someone who appreciates the attention to the finest details, you have some of the best videos I have seen when it comes to tutorials. Your filming, editing, music selection, on screen visuals, WOW. You're truly an inspiration, thank you for making this informative video. I also edit on premier and use the same codecs as proxy, but I have a major issue when I start to pile videos on top of each other, even if I nest them the system slows down. When adding other things like motion graphics it then crashes and I have to restart multiple times, do you have any tips for that ? System is i7 8700 32GB RTX2080 so not too bad
We need to watch every video of Gal 😊
Thanks from Brazil.
Great Vid!!
Thanks for sharing so useful knowledge 👃😊
Thanks for your helpful video, may I ask, what monitor do you use for your editing?
Thanks Gal. for this tut. I use a windows desktop computer. Will I have issues editing in Apple Pro Rez since its not a Mac computer?
Ahhh... So it begins.... Thank you for the helpful tip!
Thank you. Interesting.
Thank you!!
Thanks for useful sharing 👌
So many hours spent trying to resolve this issue over so many years of frustration and re-specs...all because of a lousy codec. My week is made and my hopes are high, I only wish I knew this 10 years ago.
Happy Monday! Hurray for the new video!
Thank you for making this video. I use multiple gopro cameras and they shoot in both h.264 and h.265. I usually edit in these codecs and my pc can handle it but I am trying to find a different method for when I'm using my laptop on the road. It's not as powerful so it has a hard time. Is it feasible to transcode 100+ clips? (Sometimes I use 3 gopro cameras so that I can have 3 different angles of the same clip). I find the proxy method is even more cumbersome. Do you have any suggestions? Also..... if I transcode to RroRes, will my windows machine (using premiere pro) be able to work with that codec? Thanks so much. UPDATE.... I gave it a try and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been trying to find a good way to transcode only the clips that I will use and this is exactly what I need! Thank you thank you
Thank you for the video. I know mov for mac what about PC?
Hey Gal, this will help me save a lot of time when editing. I use a Dell PC. Is Apple Pro Res an option?
@PremiereGal
2 жыл бұрын
Yep! Works on both Mac and PC .
Kelsey, this is fantastic. My new Macbook Pro Max (64gb ram/ 2 TB storage!) will appreciate working with ProRes files! Is there any downside to "import then transcode" as described vs. an independent transcode workflow in Me ? In other words, if my workflow includes 1. inspect and name 4k 422 clips from the finder; 2. upload all clips to backup cloud storage before any editing 3. WOULD NOW BE THE TIME to transcode to ProRes using Me (prior to Pr) ? In other words, is there any reason NOT to bring a bunch of clips to transcode in Me and just let the machine work overnight if possible prior to editing? Is there a benefit by keeping it all within a Pr session file? THX!

oh, nevermind on trying to game the system -- Me transcodes incredibly fast on my new MBP Max. ~31GB of H.264 442 transcoded to ~112GB ProRes 422 in a few minutes. So the workflow to use ingest / transcode from within Pr is Just Fine. Um. Wow. Thanks for this video! Wondering out loud what happens if I remove the H264 files from local storage once transcoded? I guess I have to test this.
Nice video. Going to investigate if this also speeds up the editing process on a Window PC instead of a Mac.

Yes! On both :)
Yah It's 100% Works Pros 422 Boost up software preview speed Also in After Effects which is major issue !! every one should convert before starting there project
QUESTION: I clicked on your using proxy video and you use h.264. Do you still recommend that as a proxy since in this video you're talking about how h.264 is not recommended for playback?
Once again, another Premiere issue SOLVED! Thanks Premiere Gal!
Thanks for sharing this tip! I've been spending the week re-learning premiere after years absence (and some tinkering in Resolve). I do have a 2 quick questions if you don't mind 🙂 1. Does the transcode folder clear itself out after the project has been exported or do those larger files remain, needing to be cleaned up should a user need more space? 2. Would there be benefit to this method over instead setting Video Preview in Sequence Settings to Apple ProRes 422 Proxy and then on export doing "Match Sequence preview settings" under preset? Looking forward to your input!
Hello, I have a problem, once I rendered video using H.265 1080p with bitrate 10 Mbps but the rendered video contain binding specially in the gradient colors. I asked someone he tells me to render video with 10-bit color grade! but I don't know which option in render windows is responsible to do so. can you please tell me what to do. with all my love and respect to you all from Egypt ❤❤

I just got the Canon Vixia GX10 4k records in MP4 but Im looking in the manual to see the codec. It did not list it so I used a program called MediaInfo and it is saying Advanced Media Codec?
how is it any different than creating proxies for smooth editing?
I did this to a sony 4k 120p and it transcoded it to 4k 60p. There was no option to change anything but from H.264 to prores 422...should i have done another step?
You cannot get a tiff from jpeg, same with h264 to apple prores, you can physically but it will be lossy. Shoot initially in prores and do not transcode as the more you convert the worse it gets. Mov container however can use inside itself an h264 file with added metadata, but still the footage will be h264. If you want to edit natively an h264 get an Edius an Intel k processor.

One more thing to note: if you shoot canon, you can shoot in All-I - not IPB to get intraframe. not everyone can shoot in ProRes, but I do recommend getting an Ninja Atomos recording monitor which can 👍

@@PremiereGal While the proxies can be good for fast production, for more movie style editing nothing beats full res editing.
Could that be the reason that I have pixelization when I try to stretch out a still photo on my timeline? (For the whole Ken Burns effect) :) Thanks ahead of time Kelsey!
@PremiereGal
2 жыл бұрын
No you shouldn’t have pixelization for extending a photos duration in a timeline. But you will when you keyframe your scale to go up, for example to 200% you’ll get pixelation
Can you make a video about new features on premiere pro 2022?
Is this different to creating proxies?
Do you edit from an internal or external drive? If external, what do you recommend?
what do you think of the "feedback_pro_v1.2.1" script for post production and for correcting the feedback?
What a beautiful hat tanks for video
i have lag playback when i editing a video (replace with after effect composition) linked from after effect in premiere . how can i fix that
I was wondering if you could tell us more about "Script" . I would love to know more about it.
Would you recommend exporting in Apple Pro Res, or H.264 (the original file CODEC)?
@PremiereGal
2 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you are sharing, generally best to export to H.264 if your uploading for web
what about for windows?
So, why inject to .mov instead of just creating ProRes proxies? I don't like the idea of conversion for sources.
Can I start editing first while waiting for the files to transcode? It's taking a few hours to finish transcoding
I don't use a mac, should I transcode to DNxHD?
Is this process faster than creating proxies?
Believe me I subscribed
just curious, why you do not chose to use a proxy workflow with a lower res editing friendly codec, say something like cineform? Same faster work flow but a lot less space required for the proxies then full prores 422
@PremiereGal
2 жыл бұрын
I suggest proxies at the end, they also work great. I guess there isn’t much of a difference besides the fact you’ll be able to see the full res preview will you edit.

i ´ve always wondered if transcoding to pro res makes you loose image quality or bit depth of your original files?

Any solution about mogrt lag playback, even if we are using a strong GPU?
My PC doesn't have issues playing back H.264 or H.265 clips, however motion graphics (animations) do slow it down. I just render these when needed to view.
How to wrastle the h.265 which I’m told is gonna become more common as it’s a default on newer apple phones. 😵💫😵💫😵💫 I’ve tried doing a proxy workflow and it is still abysmal. 🙏🏻❤️
I have a question , can someone turn this on my phone to stop a curtain motion in my video ?

I use at the moment Workflow 1: Record ProRes 422 > Edit (large files) > Export H.264 (standard quality) Workflow 2: Record H.265 > Edit (small files, require fast computer) > Export H.265 (best quality) Record H.264 only if use video as it is, without editing -- or qualiy is not so important.
