Spector Dimension 5 vs Dingwall NG2 5 (featuring 14 Different Preamps)

Музыка

Today we're comparing the Spector Dimension 5 and the Dingwall NG 2 5. Both basses have the same scale lengths but completely different tones. The Dimension is equipped with the Fishman Fluency System featuring a 2-band EQ, coil split, and voice switch, whereas the NG 2 comes stock with the Darkglass Tone Capsule 3-Band Preamp and a 4-way pickup selector switch. The onboard EQ of each bass remains flat throughout the video and all Spector tones have the pickups set to dual coil unless otherwise specified. This video mainly cycles through the different voicing options of each bass with the Spector's Voice Switch and the Dingwall's Pickup Selector.
All of the playing examples are identical through each preamp, so think of this video like the old Choose Your Own Adventure books. Timestamps for each preamp are below so you can skip over to your favorite. All preamps with selectable distortion are engaged but set quite moderately (with the exception of the Alpha Omega and B7K).

I feel like the Spector has more character, and the Dingwall is more neutral. I really prefer the Spector, but from a recording standpoint, the Dingwall may be easier to mix and shape in post. For me, it would depend on the situation.

I own a couple Spector including a Dimension and I never considered Ding a rival. Is like comparing a sumo to a Ninja imo, pickups, Ding has 3 piccups, the Spec has 2. Spector's rival is Warwic. Ding's rival is Kiesel, which also uses same 3 piccup configuration. Ding also costs about $1000 more than the Spec or Kiesel and I don't do gig bags. No Loccing Hardshell case? No sale. I outgrew gig bags in high-school 😂 that said, all the brands I mentioned here build excellent Basses, can do well with any of those 4 so really is just matter of which one fits ya style and taste and ya budget. Dude here Sounds good with both. Excellent video.

Spector is my favorite, more low end. BUT - I can imagine that the Dingwall is better suited for a metal band with, e.g., double bass drum and downtuned guitars, it would cut through the (heavily low-laden) mix. Therefore, as always: it depends ... on your individual preferences, on what your playing, etc. But I absolutely appreciate the tons of work to make this video! Great job, folks!!

Really tough call between these two. I'm listening through my hi-fi speakers and the Spector sounds massive, but in some other comparisons I prefer the Dingwall. If I EQ my P-bass to have boosted low end like the Spector (using pedal or amp EQ, obviously), objects in the room start to chime in with their own vibrations and things start falling off the shelves. If I EQ to sound more like the Dingwall, maybe with some light pedal overdrive, I feel like it's going to get muddy when I play with a couple guitarists. I'm sure there's a much larger range of tones that can be produced from these as well. Just comparing these two as a way to get a clean low B string (and play it up the neck so I don't have to drop tune as much), but also to give myself more versatility - as in, which sound for which song / physical setting. A living room or small bar isn't great for massive low end as noted above, but outdoors it might sound "natural" with no additional reverberations. How you EQ mids and highs is more dependent on what the guitar players are doing in the particular song.

Went to the local bass shop and tried the 5 string Spector and Dingwall Combustion 5 and 5 string NG-3). The Spector sounds good but the ergonomics of the Dingwall were a siren song. Walked out with a Combustion mostly because I don't care for the solid color paint jobs of the NG. Combustions are beautiful in comparison, especially the no-pickguard version. I actually preferred the tone and EQ on the NG but I have gain and EQ on multiple pedals and my amp so I'll survive. Pre-amps are easily replaced, wood grain is not.

I want so bad to love the new Spector basses but, for me, the Spector sound is maple body wings and EMG pickups. Getting your piece of the pie on the extended range/fanned fret market… I get diversification. I feel like, in spite of the standard scale, a Spector Euro with EMGs would impart that sonic character and probably crush in this context even though it would be a more apples to oranges comparison.

The B string on the Dingwall sounds like just another string rather than an add-on. Sadly it still sounds a lil loose to my ears on the Spector

with no distortion, the spector sounds better with a fuller sound. With distorition I think Dingwall sounds better , more attack!

Surprisingly, the spector sounded very... un-spectorlike. Very scooped and clanky, not a fan. The only preamps that made it shine are the tech 21

The Dingwall for me just sounds over exaggerated or forced, where as the Spector seems way more natural. So it’s the Spector all day for me.
