Spectacular Time Lapse Dam "Removal" Video | National Geographic

Ойын-сауық

October 28, 2011 - The White Salmon River in Washington state is flowing again as the nearly 100-year-old Condit Dam was disabled with explosives Wednesday. The reservoir draining took about 2 hours. Further demolition is scheduled in 2012. The event is a significant milestone for river restoration and dam removal nationwide.

David Secondname Not to mention about 100yrs worth of accumulated deoxygenated sludge that went downstream to pollute & settle in otherwise clean aquatic habitat. All washed down with a slug of very, very cold water. Such is the engineers solution for a quick cheap outcome. Slow is better but requires care & forethought.

Nature is wonderful and its engineering is fascinating to say the least. Big projects are so breathtaking. Let us hope that the salmon thrive as climbing a dam to find the breeding grounds was not simple. I cannot imagine humans mating after such a climb!

I worked on this removal process for over ten years before the day this was filmed. The river looks truly amazing today. You would honestly never be able to tell where the dam was. And the salmon population has moved back in. From a river restoration perspective the project is a complete success.

@Timothy TwoTwoThree The gates holding back water were destroyed, not opened, effectively turning the entire structure into a wall on the river. Sorry but it's no longer a dam.

@Timothy TwoTwoThree the dam literally lost it's ability to hold any water and thus lost its use as a dam. Therefore the dam was destroyed. Just stop being so nit picky.

Let me join the war of words :D This is one of the steps of the removal of the dam. And it is actually the most important step, because this is the step of no-return; The dam is destined to be demolished after this, so for the public, no matter if they like it or hate it, this is the step everybody will watch it happen. In the end at least it's cool isn't it?

They actually did remove as many fish as they could find for many miles downstream and moved them upstream before they exploded the hole. That being said probably a ton of animals still got caught in the flow but it wasn't as if they made no effort.
