Species Spotlight | Glass Catfish

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Fluval Aquatics Expert Tom Sarac provides an in-depth overview of an incredible, unique species - Glass Catfish! A true schooling fish, Glass Catfish must absolutely be kept in groups of 6 or more, and should not be kept with larger, boisterous fish. They should only be added to biologically-mature aquariums, and should be kept in tanks of 30 US Gal / 115 L or more!

    I have had these in the past. They usually stayed in one corner of the tank and didn't move unless it was feeding time.

    I had a couple dozen of these at one time and they were so unique and beautiful. I love their personalities. Sadly I lost all of them in a columnaris outbreak. It broke my heart and made me want to leave the hobby for a while. But I definitely want a tank that's only or mostly only ghost cats in the future.

    thanks for sharing ! i used to own one GlassCatFish with a betta in a 10gallon. I've had it for a few years but he didn't grew as big as my friend's (who were bought together ) in her 55gal ! i knew nothing about that fish at the time ... Now i'm really missing it ! i really loved that fish and wish to offer them a better understood lifestyle this time. i already have 2 snails. I'm getting a Betta (maybe giant) and probably a Gold ring butterfly fish. i'm learning about Blue Phantom Pleco since i would like to own one too. Would my planted 23gal Fluval Vista be a good forever home for 7 GlassCatFish ? i wanted to get 3 but apparently it's not enough ... 5?

    Hi there! You'll want a slightly larger aquarium for Glass Catfish - we recommend at least 30 gallons for a group, but larger would be better! We keep ours in a 55 gallon tank. 👍

    Dang, I just ordered 6 of these guys along with a few other community fish, guppies and loaches etc, I set my new 55 gallon tank up about a month ago with substrate and all natural plants, now that I hear this info, my only concern is my tank is still too new, had a couple of rain storms and was able to capture about 30 gallons of rain water, mixed with city water, don’t know if that makes a difference, the few fish I recently got are thriving and seem happy so I’ll stay optimistic

  • @fluval

    It should be okay, but keep an eye on them! Red Tail Sharks can become quite aggressive, especially as they age, but it does tend to depend on the individual animal. 🐟

    Question, if you keep 1 catfish for about 5 gallons, how do you keep other fish because of the inch/gallon rule? I’m wondering this because they can get slightly big in a 30 gallon.

  • @fluval

    @fluval

    2 жыл бұрын

    The inch per gallon rule is very general and should not be taken too literally. For example, a 15" fish cannot be kept in a 15 US Gal aquarium! If you're keeping a group of 6 Glass catfish in a 30 US Gal tank, they would be your main stocking feature, but you'd have space left for some tankmates - maybe some Corydoras, or some smaller, peaceful tetras!

    Hey mate!, I have about 8 glass cats, I brought another 2 from the fish shop, didn't get a good look at them, when I got home there body's are very white and milking, (like the ones in your video) & not exactly see through like the others I have? Is this a problem? Or do they get abit milky as they get older? Thanks in advance.

  • @fluval

    @fluval

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! Glass Catfish can become a bit milky / cloudy in appearance when they're stressed. This can be a result of them being sick, being older, being kept in an unsuitable aquarium, having just been added to the tank (probably the case with yours), or having a camera shoved in their faces (the case with ours!). Try to keep up with water changes and give them some time, you'll most likely see them start to look like the others soon!

    Are bettas recommended tank mates in a 29 gal?

  • @fluval

    @fluval

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! In general, we recommend keeping Bettas by themselves, to allow the aquarium to be set up to suit their rather particular needs. That said, some Bettas do very well in community tanks, and as Glass Catfish are not particularly aggressive or boisterous, they could do fine with them!
