Fun fact about Perception: in the Repconn HQ building, there are "hidden doors" that you can only interact with if you have a Perception skill of 8 or higher. They're not doors you can enter per se. More like just move your cursor over spots on the walls and activate them and get some exp. Not a huge amount, but some.

The thing about Endurance is that every point you put into it is effectively given back into another SPECIAL stat. Say you want 7 in agility. Put 6 into it and 1 extra into Endurance and you walk away with the same Agility once you buy the implant but 1 extra in Endurance for free. And Sub-Dermal Armour is just amazing for a light armour build.

Here is my Hot take... Charisma is the Best stat because you don't need it and can leave it at 1 to use those points elsewhere without suffering any real penalty. As it is easy to boost speech and barter. And you More or less passively invest skill points into them by playing naturally. It is useful because of how useless it is. Basically Schrodingers Charisma.

  • @fg6971

04:51 Interestingly enough, in old fallouts Endurance was considered the weakest stat by far. Basically, you could get everything that Endurance gave you by boosting Strength. Since in old fallouts radiation was non issue and poisoning was pretty non-existent, you didn't need really the main selling points of radiation and poison resistance. And if hit points were what you were after, then Strength was just the better option even if you didn't go melee character since extra carry weight is always nice and some weapons had strength requirements to use. In newer fallouts this was largely subverted and you had genuine reason to take Endurance as enviromental hazards were now much more common plus it modified skills. In Fallout 4, Endurance is once again thought to be "the worst stat" since other stats have more desirable perks (Who the hell takes Lead Belly or Aquaboy/girl over perks like Armorer or Gun nut?).

  • @ReapeeRon

    @ReapeeRon

I do a similar thing. As useful as stuff like strength and endurance are, I want to make a character that’s similar to how I’d imagine my personal stats would be, in which case it’s a Charisma & Intelligence build all the way. Plus I’ve always just been a fan of the charisma-based ways of solving problems and advancing quests in any RPG. I like my characters to be “talkers” and I feel like having that x-factor of being just plain likable makes the most sense as the leader/heart of any sort of ragtag group of heroes (Fallout with your companions, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc).

Here is a list of suggestions for how to spice things up by speccing differently from what you're used to. I will try to give you an excuse to and a plan for dumping or speccing for each stat. S - Strength Dump: Spec: Get the biggest guns and power armor, and buy enough ammo to never run out. You will feel like an angel of death, and to put a cherry on top, have a chainsaw or thermic lance with sick damage. P - Perception Dump: Aren't you alreaddy? This stat offers little besides skills, and luck or int compensate easily. Spec: Blow shit up with explosives, and for a bonus never miss a detail in dialogue. You don't need it, but explosives rely so little on anything gained by other stats, and perception lets you see stuff sooner so you can get them while they're at a distance. E - Endurence Dump: If you don't like challanges, i have nothing, but if you do then get ready for fallout nv the puzzle game. With no health every hit becomes deadly, every second in radiation is costly, and for what it's worth you will allways need a weapon as your fists are useless. face every challenge as a puzzle where you need to find the solution or perish. Spec: If you want a break this is a no brainer, but if you want a challenge considder baning weapons, armor, and chems you haven't crafted. Unarmed, unarmored, but still a menace. C - Charisma Dump: Aren't you alreaddy? Spec: Yes, passifist run, it's that obvious, but considder also that if you want to drop strength and endurence you can take someone like Veronica and use her as a tank, while you can hang back and snipe the enemy. You don't need health or melee damage, and your buddy can carry your stuff. Not as reliable as strength and endurence, but two stats take up twice as many points, so by trading both you can get some utility back with charisma and then spec more into other stats. I - Intelligence Dump: Fallout is a great game, if yu dump intelligence, you get funny dialogue options, you can understand giberish, and paired with wild wasteland it's a great way to play a funnier and slightly more challenging way. Spec: Aren't you alreaddy? Getting more skill points on level up and more helpful dialogue options than any other stat makes int amazing. A - Agility Dump: Eh... masochism? Look, agility is so integral to the most basic stuff like v.a.t.s. and handling weapons (reload or swap) that dumping it is viable for a pacifist run, for a challenge, and basically just that. It could be interesting to dump it and then rebind the v.a.t.s. button to try a v.a.t.s. free run to see how adicted you really are, but apart from pacifist runs agility is critical. Though either explosives or companions are reccomended if you do dump agility. Spec: Aren't you alreaddy? If you for some reason have yet to spec for agility, then just do so and you'll be golden, focus on guns and use v.a.t.s. when you feel like it, enjoy the ability to swap and reload weapons fast and play Fallout nv. If you want a different way to use agility, then may I let you in on the fact that the original fallout was deaigned such that all main quests had at least three solutions: fighting, talking, or sneaking. I bet you can solve more problems than you expected without even being seen, try a stealth build. L - Luck Dump: Do you wanna feel acomplished? Climb up from rock bottom with no luck to get you free stuff. Nearly no crits, no free casino money, and only skills you have worked for, meaning not much untill you start working! Luck isn't necissary, and if you like to feel like you earned evry inch, dumping it can help Spec: On the other hand, if you want to have it all, why not begin decent in moat things and head off to vegas to get rich? Crit builds have tons of support in this game, and with a nice shiny weapon you bought with all that casino money I'm sure you can have some fun hitting them where it counts. How to: Dump all: Does doing such a thing aound like what you'd want to do? Play pathologic, or pathologic 2, it is a simmilar kind of game but bleaker and without any of the growing in power stuff. Spec all: You want to be exceptio al at everything? Look up console commands. If you haven't used them before, it can seem scary, but most commands are risk free, and you can open the console with a single button alreaddy if you didn't know. Beware though, it may become a slippery slope where you can't resist the temptation and wind up ruining the challenge of all your runs by teleporting everywhere, spawning in powerful gear and skipping all booring quests, remember that the game devs knew what they were doing for the most part.

I think you should do a special list for Fallout 3 as well. Imo there Endurance is somewhat less useful and agility too as they affect fewer things and there are no stat implants. In most Fallout games charisma was kinda bad. In FO3 and NV perception is basically needed for better criticals. Having ED-E is the same as perception 10. And sneak attacks from Hidden always do criticals so that 50% dmg is awesome some builds can reach very high crit % so their insane dmg increases. That 1 perk alone justifies perception. Charisma should have taken the Fallout 2 route more charisma means you can have more companions at a time that would have been a good reason especially if you wanted a diplomatic char who has a team that does the killing. And stuff like int and even perception have many dialogue options charisma has much fewer.......

From a full DLC perspective, I’d say: S: A - recommend 6 (10 with implant, reinforced spine and power armour). Carry weight and weapon handling so helpful for any build. Everything else is a build necessity or bonus. P: C - 5 (6 implant). For perks only. ED-E handles radar. E: S - 9 (10 implant). Max for implants and max health & resistances useful for obvious reasons. C: F - 1 (2 implant). Dump stat. I: B - 3 or 4 (4 or 5 implant). As you say… you don’t even need high intelligence to get 100 in all skills. Not hitting skill checks is annoying, but mentats and black coffee can overcome that. A: A - 7 or 8 (8-10 implant and perhaps Lonesome Road). Good for perks. VATs (including recharge time) and reload speed also very useful. L: S - 8 (9-10 implant and perhaps Lonesome Road). Great early game money making without exploits. Great for crits. Best skills uplift bar intelligence.

In the older fallouts (1 and 2) all dialogue in the game would be changed by how intelligent you were, with many interactions and dialogue routes being tied behind having 7+ Int. Pair it with higher Perception (since high perception in Fallout 1 and 2 would also impact Dialogue, same as Charisma itself but more rarely), and how you get many more Skill Points in Fallout Games before New Vegas per point of int, and Intelligence was often as important as high Agility/Luck in optimal builds that weren't trying to be idiot runs.

However if you are playing New Vegas and you do not know the ins and outs, as well as opting to go intelligence can also be good with repairing your stuff, the system is far better than fallout 3 sure but bullying the powder gangers around goodspring, you can leave good spring more than well equipped, I dare say possibly breaking the beginning stretch, and if you really want to have phat ammo packs, you will leave goodsprings with a good amount of 357 and a fistful of caps.

Endurance is probably the single most important stat in the game bar none. If solely because of the implant mechanics. Every point in endurance up to 7 is effectively a +1 to another stat. This means that if you know the absolute minimum number of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points a perk requires, you can make your build N-1 and add a point to another stat you want in your build more, buying the relevant implant to bring you up to the minimum for your perk. Strength is definitely higher tier just because Strongback and Burden to Bear exist, especially in hardcore. 2 perks and an extra 100 points to your carrying capacity. Combined with Heavyweight and/or Packrat, you can carry a deceptive amount of gear. If you're using glitches, intentionally or not, agility and intelligence actually take a sizable hit for all nonperk related matters The Dead Money clothing glitch can give you infinite Agility (to the point reloads for even slow single loading weapons like the .357 or hunting shotgun are instantaneous) in exchange for pre-war clothes The Skilled trait glitch can give you 15 free points in all skills over the course of the game (which when combined with the Good Natured trait, is 20 for basically all noncombat skills, more than enough for even 1 intelligence builds to max out most or all noncombat skills and at least one combat skill). [Skilled is already BROKENLY powerful even without the glitch since it gives the equivalent of 65 free skill points, which is several LEVELS worth of points to even a 10 intelligence build which, without educated, gets 15 points and 17 with. Skilled at its absolute weakest level is more than 4 levels worth of points and is closer to 6 for lower intelligence builds]

So do you not want to have high perception on an explosive/energy weapons build? I just started a new character with high perception who is going to be using both weapon skills.

You pretty much want a 6 in Perception at most when starting your build and usually only for perk selection. 7 with the implant gives you access to better criticals and 6 lets you get the hobbler and sniper perk. Beyond that, your only true benefit is minor skill point increases that don't matter as much with the lv50 cap. Or the ability to see foes on the radar sooner. 7 points will also pass most conversational tests. For anything above that, temporary perception is very easy to acquire. Multiple companions and a huge array of clothing both basic and end game will give more than enough temporary Perception.

I'm thinking of going: (+1= implants) S-7+1. P-5+1. E-8+1. C-1. I-6+1. A-6+1. L-7+1. with Good Natured and Skilled(×3). I'll be playing sneaky sniper + VATS and crits for cqc. 7+1 strength is for my compulsive hoarding, and to meet the requirements for the Anti-materiel rifle. Maybe i should go with 6+1 for strength instead, if i can get +2 from Big MT. I'll probably go to Big MT before my guns skill reaches 100 either way, so i wouldn't meet the requirements for the AMR until then anyways.

If you're using glitches, you could always do the run goodsprings run glitch if you have 4 free hours to do it (or do the level up command). Get double the perks.

Intelligence + luck/agility is the best way to start the game. I don’t see the reason to go crazy over endurance since you can increase it overtime.

But with less than 9 endurance you're limited on the number of implants. Every point in endurance is a point somewhere else, just costing caps. Which isn't a problem with 8+ luck

@@JustinAlcorn 7 or 8 Endurance with Intense Training and Implant taking it up to 10 is probably optimal. Especially on hardcore and high difficulty settings. You need 10 endurance to get every implant, but you could easily pass on the Charisma and health regen implants and not miss out on too much fine.

It's pretty interesting what Bethesda did to all the special stats in F4. Strength and endurance are basically the same (ie; good) but all the other special stats have their purpose. Charisma being tied to the settlement mechanics makes it downright mandatory if you care about that portion of the game. And in my humble opinion, Luck is completely broken in Fallout 4.

  • @BaeBunni

I wanna make the argument Charisma is better than Preception, but both are basically dump stats. The fact that a pretty good portion of dlc make you have a companion anyway. Honest Hearts, and Dead money specifically with Lonesome Road also having EDE. Making them better fighters isn't much of a negative. Also a pretty decent amount of the side content are the companions and giving them bonus damage and bonus DT is very beneficial especially since hardcore mode give them permadeath.
