Special Report: Universal Credit: Britain on the breadline

The Government is being urged to pause the mass roll-out of its new benefits system next week as charities warn it is forcing people into poverty.
Sky Correspondent Joe Tidy visits a foodbank in Oldham in this special report and finds many people are struggling to come to terms with the new scheme.

U.C was introduced to save the country money. They have found out recently, it's costing the country more. But the govenment wont end it.. i personally think it is a stupid idea.. montly payments, rent paid into your bank. A lot of people cannot handle money on a monthly basis. Not just addicts.

10 years ago when I saw people addicted to drink and drugs I assumed that they had brought it upon themselves and could change if they wanted to. 10 years on I know this is most definitely not the case. For many struggling with addiction it’s often a complex set of interlinking factors often starting very young that lead a person to drink. In so many cases I’m aware of where there is a sibling struggling with addiction too. My housemate is 22 she’s already a recovering alcoholic. Her brother spent 3 weeks in intensive care due to alcohol abuse. It’s clear talking to her that they experienced abuse in the home and turned to alcohol to cope. Likewise I may not drink or so drugs but I struggle with food and exercise. I have episodes of binge eating and this is followed by excessive exercise. Until society understands the factors that lead to addiction and “mental illness” things will never improve

The biggest canard ever presented to the public - sovereignty - is overturned in a moment by reference to this program, and countless others. Hundreds of thousands of people, fully entitled to state support, have been reduced to starvation and in many cases, death, by the very deliberate actions of the UK government. And what did the EU do? Absolutely nothing. They respected the authority of the UK policy makers entirely; they in no way came to the rescue of the multitudes of destitute suffering individuals or families. If they had - which largely was within the scope of the post war legislative environment - they would have been condemned for interference. But no such thing ever happened. And that - for those pushed into horrible and prolonged deaths - was a tragedy.

@@cyrene7784 the system is wrong not the people there will always be fakers trying to get more than they deserve but universal credit was always intended to help people back into work. That means long term sick or disabled people should not be on it because they cant work and therefore it would be pointless switching them to a system that aids them into work. See my point? Income support and ESA claimants should be allowed to claim housing benefit on the old system if theyre not fit enough to ever work such as those with brain damage etc.

It sucks that people need benefits to begin with because it is not the government paying them, it is the taxpayer. However, it is a reality, like it or not. If some help is not offered society falls apart and it will be crappy for everyone. Pay the benefits biweekly, pay the rent portion directly to the landlord. Something has to change because if all that money is being paid out for universal credit but people are still needing food banks and becoming homeless, then what was the point of that money in the first place? It is obvious a wee bit of government babysitting is needed to ensure that benefits go where it is suppose to, and that is largely housing. Why can’t the government just acknowledge this?
