When I was with the 7th ID (late 80ies) we use to train with the 20th NG SF group at a place we knew well called "Hunter Liggett". We would play as civilians or opfor and hunt them while they tried to E&E. Those who we caught were tortured both mentally and physically in a comedic way.

@@The508ranger I was in the guard and the moment active was done and was sent to a unit it was all downhill for me. Unit was a shart show and most always tried to find a corner to hide in all the time to do nothing. More than half couldn't pass PT and we never did any meaningful training while upper enlisted and officers did their paperwork. It wasn't what I was expecting and yeah maybe I just got a bad unit but I just wanted the contract to be over at that point so I was just counting the years. I should have went full active I liked the structure of active duty and being able to do what we needed to do and that unit just left a bad taste in my mouth that made me want to just be gone from it all. My advice is start active with a 3 year contract it'll be over in a flash and you'll know what you are in for and whether you like it or not don't be like me and sign a 6x2 right off the rip with national guard and get mired down in a bad spot.

I have many questions for this. 1. Do you get to deploy with active duty units as SF? 2. Can you volunteer to deploy with SF active units 3. Can I volunteer for other army training once I’m in the national guard? 4. As a prior service who ended as a specialist. Will I get my rank back? (Seems that something the recruiter would know but if anyone here knows I appreciate it) 5. Once you graduate or make it through SF as a national guard are you considered a green beret? (Stupid question but I just want to be clear on that) Any feed back would be helpful.

    1. If you're part of an SF Guard team you will be deploying at some point so I don't know what motivates your question 1. If you want to play Army 24/7 while in the Guard, then become an AGR. And if you also like a high operational tempo all of the time why not go active duty? Rangers may be more appealing at that point. 2. If there is a need for your area of expertise, you can probably volunteer. 3. You can volunteer for many other army schools. 4. As prior service (E4) specialist you will get your rank back. If you're actually in the SF training pipeline and beyond, promotions happen quickly. 5. After the last portion of the Special Forces Qualification Course you will receive your Green Beret. But don't rest on your laurels because making it to an SF team doesn't mean you'll stay there. If you're a dirtbag and don't maintain standards, you can find yourself as an 11B after a short time.

website says 34 but I'd bet that age-based waivers are a thing -- I'm going back into school for a career change (went to University for English -- thought I'd be a teacher but went a different route -- moved back to my home area and there's no jobs for videographers so I'm going to go back for a trade)... I'd love to join the guard after I'm done with this program and it would be cool as hell to try for 18x through the Massachusetts 20th group -- but I'm going to have to talk to recruiters because it sounds like if you fail, you are automatically sent to infantry (which isn't something I'm afraid of, but I'd rather go into another in-demand MOS that is relevant to the trade I'll be studying -- electrician + automation technology -- they have a ton of electronics repair and operator based MOS's that are in-demand). Won't know more til I talk to someone and it sounds like I should hunt down someone from that 20th group specifically before talking to a more general recruiter.

When I did the SFRE tryouts, we had a few guys in their late 30s. The thing is, you have to have something to offer at the age -- being very athletic and possessing some good civilian "skills" are important. Age waivers exist as long as you have a quality that can help the team. Since you're only 27/28, don't worry about it. I would make sure you get your law enforcement career up and going first, then join the National Guard, stay in great shape, and finally attend a SFRE.

I would recommend finding the unit you want to join and talk to the recruiter at their armory and not mentioning anything about your back to anyone. As far as age goes for prior service in the guard, as long as you would be able to retire by the time you're 60 and have 20 years of service, you should be able to get into a guard unit, but the recruiter would know for sure.

You would have to pay these fines on your own. I don't get this. The UK has removed the SF status from reserve units (it was historical). The reserve units could never match the training, readiness of regular units. How honestly can these guys, no matter the commitment, match regular SF units? Can not happen. They are dedicaded and the line units want them, still tough, tougher in some instances, achievable and adds value!

  • @shootingbricks8554

The UK military is small compared to the US. The US saves some money by having reserve units. Also, the vast majority of 19th and 20th Special Forces Groups were prior active duty Special Forces Soldiers so the experience is there. There are actually benefits to this for example a Special Forces medic working as an ER nurse or paramedic. They get the best from both military and civilian worlds.

At least on the Guard side of things, their SFRE tryouts are, in principle, open to any branch. Obviously, the personnel in the other branches may have recently transitioned (or will transfer to) the Army National Guard. For example, when I participated in the SFRE for the 19th Group in California, we had a Captain from the Air Force PJs (ret) in his uniform, and a Recon Marine with his garb, both trying out alongside the rest of us reservists. There were also two civilians seeing if they can make it. To add to the bunch were a handful of active duty hopefuls, from a Ranger to a guy from the 82 Airborne. There were different branches represented, backgrounds, and age groups, all the way up to late 30s. The philosophy of open-mindedness that the 19th (and I'm assuming the 20th) SF cadre possessed in choosing whom to allow at the tryouts was definitely a virtue, and reflects their standards of cross-disciplinary expertise and maturity above the young and ignorant.
